re : judai's perception of love

i've dabbed on this via ooc with multiple people ---- and while judai is genuinely for the most part stupid, clueless, and naive, his understanding of love is unfortunately damaged. to start with, judai does not have a positive model of what a healthy relationship is. his parents, who should be his blueprint for partnership, was extremely busy throughout the majority of his childhood and therefore did not actually spend as much time together as they should. on top of that yubel's antics during s3 completely frightened him from this concept. not to mention : rei's own obsession and how she went about her love towards ryo in s1 and then shifted to him, further confused him on what that emotion represented. in short : judai does not have a positive understanding of what love is.

yubel throughout s3 constantly love bombed him. most of the time judai ignored them and completely dismissed their affection. however, even he was aware that a majority of yubel's toxic behavior was based off their love for him. the death of his friends, the neighborhood children who went on comas, the concept of hurting each other because of love, all of those actions terrified judai and frankly turned him off to that particular emotion. and of course the ever so famous gaslighting, where yubel constantly claimed that judai's "own love for them" was also one of pain and suffering. naturally, judai should not be held accountable for yubel's action. after all, yubel since the beginning already intended for him to take haou's place --- and when young judai attempted to pacify them, he simply was not aware of that negative consequence.

one thing judai and his past self share : is their enormous guilt towards yubel's actions. however, in the end their action was something neither incarnations had asked yubel to make. haou did not ask yubel to sacrifice their beauty and youth for him, and judai never asked yubel to injure those around him. in the end they are suffering from yubel's love --- and by s4 judai now has that awareness towards love.

unknowingly his actions caused yubel to suffer. unknowingly his actions caused those around him to suffer. therefore, how could he be comfortable with the concept of falling in love ? he may not have intended for yubel to behave the way that they do, but in the end their gaslighting was successful. judai hurts those around him, judai makes the people who love him suffer. love is terrifying and so how could he possibly subject anyone else to his affection. he is scared as he is clueless. he is frightened as he is confused. love in the end, to him, was terror.

regardless, that event was simply irrelevant, and all judai really wanted was a shot for this license. in the end, was this not what all boys want ? the ability to taste freedom with the license to drive. grinning widely from ear to ear, the red student confidently replies, ❝ bring it on, but afterwards you'll let me drive your wheeler right ? no take-backsies, right ? ❞
