Det her var testresultatet - tager muligvis ind på hovedbiblioteket til ‘mød kandidaterne’ for at sikre mig at det er nogenlunde normale mennesker jeg overvejer at stemme på

In the year 2027

Når ens prætentiøse engelsklære beslutter sig for, at vi skal aflevere en 700-ords essay, hvor vi beskriver hvor vi er om 10 år og hvordan vores advanced niveau i engelsk har hjulpet os. Så kan han vel heller ikke forvente andet end noget utterly bs.

The 2016 movie “Captain Fantastic” portrays an extreme version of a self-sufficient, philosophically enlightened family living in the vast, north-western American wilderness. “That’s how I am going to live one day. This is paradise,” I dreamingly thought to myself, although I knew it would be an unreachable fantasy. But to quote Noam Chomsky: ”If you assume that there is no hope, then you guarantee that there will be no hope. If you assume that there is an instinct for freedom, that there are opportunities to change things, then there is a possibility that you can contribute to making a better world.” Therefore, I believed and I acted upon my dreams.

Immediately after finishing school, with a limited amount of cash, I started hitchhiking, couch-surfing and trading the few crafts skills I possessed for home-cooked meals and questionable accommodation. All the while being naïvely fond of Karl Marx, Mao Zedong and the general idea of complete equality. I was the blatantly privileged, white girl believing she could save the entire world through meditation and awareness. In the years that followed I travelled across Iran, Pakistan, Bangladesh and a dozen of other underdeveloped countries in Asia together with various of newly found travelling partners with their own peculiar and distinctive character traits further eternalizing the adventure in my mind.

After having travelled extensively through unsought terrain in Asia I landed a low-paying job as a cook on a wooden sailboat heading across the Indian Ocean. Afterwards, I volunteered as an inexperienced nurse throughout eastern and central Africa, using up the last pennies I had saved from the sailing job. Meanwhile, I went to an online college, enabling me to hold a bachelor in public health science taught in English. If I had not taken the Cambridge English exam senior year, I would have never been accepted into college due to my mediocre grades and non-existing after school curriculum.

Subsequently, I ended up leaving the continent of Africa in search of alteration regarding the daily grind. The monotonous job as a nurse had lost its allure and instead I crossed yet another ocean aboard a seemingly unfit sailboat. 21 days of mildly nauseating sea-sickness caused me to kiss the ground as soon as we reached shore in Rio de Janeiro. Through a Brazilian friend, whom I had met while visiting Papua New Guinea, I landed a job as an English teacher in the remoteness of the Amazon, the village only reachable by two-wheels. Without my apparent native-advanced English skills and my high school Spanish, I would not have been able to work my way around the world as a mean of income through teaching. Whilst teaching indigenous tribes full-time, I met a kiwi and before we knew it, we were married.

After having lived a year secluded from the “real world”, we collectively decided to travel north through South America and Central America. Lastly, we crossed the eastern coast of the United States in order to participate in Greenpeace activism. Due to our high proficiency in English and my extensive sailing expertise we were granted permission to contribute to a mission in northern Alaska where we fought off whale killers. In the meantime, we produced an award-winning documentary together with the corporation concerning plastic in the ocean and the impact it had had and still has on marine life in the arctic circle.

Considering our considerable sustainable contribution to Greenpeace, we decided to retreat after a few years on the road. We settled down in British Columbia in a little hut outside Vancouver.

So, here I am, nine years after the initial step into the wild unknown, currently working part-time at the local hospital while saving up to buy a sailboat together with my husband. The undeniable and absolute road to a carefree freedom. If my proficiency in English had not been this advanced, I would have never met my husband, nor would I have been able to travel the world in the manner I did. Always assume that there is hope.
