Both are stories about hooded smiling characters snapping, becoming killers, and killing their family members. Both are hoodes smiling characters that have become somewhat fangirled over by their fanbases, both can be considered horror stories, and both are immensely popular on the internet.

Even though that both have been criticized for being poorly written

(For Dusttale it's considered immense character assassination which I do kind of agree with, and for Jeff the killer... yeah just read the 2011 story you'll see what I mean)

But despite this, both have arisen a legacy with a massive following, giving them incredible artwork and fan stories to carry on their name

And their time they spent floating around in the internet had led to a lot of their fanbase growing up, getting better at writing and art and storytelling

Until eventually they both began getting really high effort remakes made with genuine love and desire to make a really good story out of these concepts.

Of course their originals still have their fans, and don't forget these new great stories wouldn't be here without their original counterparts, but yeah, I think Dusttale is the most creepypasta aspect of the undertale fandom. Even more than Horrortale. Though I'd argue horrortale is scarier, Dusttale is the one that feels more like a creepypasta type of story.

Seems like an opportune time to repost this comic I made a while back

Going down memory lane of the old creepypasta fandom.

Despite how much Hoodie and Masky were mentioned...

It's really weird how early in that process, Alex and Jay got completely written out of any fan works, despite Alex being arguably the Oporator's only true proxy. And Jay pretty much being the self insert into the universe.

Part of it was the ouroboros nature of fan works at the time. Most fan content was based on other fan content rather than the original stories themselves.

I mean fuck, I didn't even know Marble Hornets was a thing my first few years in the fandom space.

Maybe people just really didn't like Alex cos he didn't get a cool costume lmao. Like Hoodie only appears in four episodes and was/is a staple of the fan content. (And I mean technically he appears in the second channels and stuff but you know what I mean)

I have noticed this has changed in recent years but back then finding any fanwork for anyone other than Hoodie and Masky was pretty much impossible.
