What happened to the Night Furies?
Night Furies are one of the rarest and most intelligent species of dragon. They are incredibly elusive, tending to avoid both humans and other dragon species as they prefer to stick to their own kind. Their natural camouflage and blinding speed make them extremely difficult to track, so much so that most villages have never gotten a proper look at a Night Fury or managed to kill one. As a result, Night Furies have developed a terrifying and even mythical reputation, being described as the âunholy offspring of lightning and death itselfâ in the Book of Dragons.Â
Just as other dragons migrate during the colder months to lay their eggs, Night Furies also follow this pattern. According to old folktales, they have their own hidden island far to the east called NĂłttsheim, more commonly known as Nightâs Home or the Isle of Night, where they make nests, lay their eggs, and raise their hatchlings without fear of violent humans or dragons. This island has become a safe haven for the species in the last couple of centuries as hunters and trappers have increased their search efforts for the secretive dragons in the hopes of gaining notoriety. The only people who have fought to protect the Night Furies are found on the island of NĂłttsheim itself. A small human settlement has gathered there over the years, learning to coexist with the species and even forming bonds with them. Those who befriend a Night Fury and learn to ride one are called Night Riders. They not only protect the island from invaders but also search for wild Furies beyond the island and lead them back to safety.Â
Toothless lived with the last Berkian flock of Night Furies, which included his parents and siblings, on Dragon Island. They served the Red Death by attacking Berk and bringing her food, just as the other dragons did. However, when the Red Death was defeated by Hiccup and Toothless, the other Night Furies fled the island. Now old enough to fend for himself, Toothless remained with Hiccup while his family made their way to NĂłttsheim, where they have lived ever since.Â
#i love this#way better than the âtoothless is the last of his kindâ bs they tried to sell in thw#httyd#toothless#night fury#forever remains my favourite and the superior dragon

I'm gonna say it; Hiccup did nothing wrong. We're treating him as the biggest problem of THW when literally his worst crime in is somehow losing his freckles and that's not even something he has control over. Oh and that kind of incredibly stupid plan of literally moving an entire people by going "let's just fly straight until we hit something :) even though I, Hiccup Haddock, somehow don't believe the world is round."
The entire rest of the movie is everyone else around him being horrible and out of character.
Berk is a mess in the beginning of the movie, yes. But it was also just a year ago that his father was horribly murdered in front of him because Draco Bloodyfist-Or-Whatever decided to sent his mind controled best friend after him. Everybody expects Hiccup to be put together and solve all problems immediately and remain a Dragon Rider when he should be buying a therapist a mansion and a yacht with all those billed sessions.
Then there is being told more than once that he's putting Astrid second when he literally isn't. And told he should meet her standard.s
There is all that stuff about how he's been a horrible pet owner to Toothless when he had legitimate and real fears about Toothless not making it out in wild and about the Light Fury turning on him and about him not coming back. (Like... he's a disabled dragon, for Gods' sake??? Toothless will literally NOT make it without human intervention)
He's called out for not embracing change when his name was literally synonymous with change before THW and every bit of change he proposes in the movie is met with backlash unless Astrid, their not-chief, says it's okay.
His mother, who abandoned him for 20 and came home with him after the traumatic loss of his father spends most of the movie not being the mother she promised him to be in the second movie and even advocated for the Riders to be less dependent on dragons when she was with dragons for the entirety of those 20 years.
And then there is all the bullying. Making fun of his voice, telling him- a disabled person- to LOSE THE LIMP, telling him he's not worthy of Astrid the warrior goddess (completely forgetting how Hiccup is both parts warrior and diplomat in at least the previous two movies, let alone the movies and the shows) and these three things are all said by Tuffnut! "Forgets he has a sister in THW" Tuffnut!
And let's not forget Snotlout's "who died and made you chief?!" when Snotlout was literally crying at Stoick's funeral. And then proceeds to hit on the dead man's wife and his best friend's mother while also putting said best friend down!
Like... none of the things said to him in the first movie were as bad as some of the things said in THW.
The entire movie is also basically Hiccup being pulled from one direction to the other.
It's "You're a bad chief because you're not changing anything" yet it's also "how dare you make this change!"
It's "you should step up as chief" yet it's also "we will only listen if Astrid says it's good."
It's "you were literally keeping Toothless captive for 6 years :/" yet it's also "Uuuhhh, time to cut the umbilical cord, don't you think? đ"
It's "you let Toothless go free, what did you expect?" yet also "uh, you let him go???"
It's "you are literally nothing without Toothless, sorry :/" yet it's also "Toothless only showed you what was already inside."
It's "you should put Astrid first for once" yet it's also "I, Hiccup, will literally listen to every single word you, Astrid, says even if it's hurtful."
It's "I, Astrid, will suggest to you, Hiccup, that we go find Toothless in the hidden world" yet it's also "I, Astrid, will blame you, Hiccup, for deciding to go to the Hidden World, making the Light Fury, who you have no control over, to follow us back home"
It's "hey man, can you help me with this dragon tail? :(" yet it's also "I will literally not listen to you when I'm about to break this branch that I and the dragon tail are on."
I mean, my God! I'd sent the dragons away if I had to listen to that for the past year after I watched my father die a gruesome death.
And that's not even the worst part. The worst part is Toothless abandoning Hiccup for the most shallow reason there is; chasing dragon tail that doesn't even want anything to do with him unless he does something that impresses her when he's the king of the dragons.
So yeah, probably an unpopular opinion, but besides one bad plan, Hiccup did nothing wrong besides listen to what all the people around him were saying, no matter how much they contradict themselves.
Really, what he needs is a hug. A Real one. :(

Okay so, the prospect of dragons becoming 'softer' and 'less strong' and 'pet-like' due to living with vikings for a few years is so messed up!
This is partially due to how Toothless was characterized in THW. His character in Httyd 1 & 2 + GotNF +RoB/DoB + RTTE + other short movies is leagues different from THW Toothless. And amongst the common reasons theorized for this is dragons having become 'softer spoiled pets' due to 'being away from the wild'. And I hate it!
These dragons, especially the ones who have riders, are canonically stronger, faster, smarter and stealthier than any wild dragons due to all the experience they gained over the years. The dragons of Berk, particularly the gang's dragons, have travelled tremendous distances in single flights, fought battles with armadas and hunters and submarines and entire flocks and practically giants, been to habitats far and wide where wild ones don't dare venture, been through so much, have had near death experiences countless times and came out of those stronger than before. Heck they've even planned and strategized before! They have sharper instincts, faster reflexes, higher endurance and stamina than the wild ones who live in their own habitats. These guys have experienced and survived going through all kinds of habitats. I really doubt that the gang's dragons, the first and last line of defence, the researcher assists, the protectors and best friends of the most competent group on the island would get soft just like that.
AND! And, each of these dragons, Toothless, Meatlug, Hookfang, Stormfly, Barf and Belch, they were becoming smarter and smarter by the day. Toothless in the first movie was intelligent, curious, kind, stealthy, elegant, scary, dangerous, adorable, protective, strong. And he remained as such throughout the series. Why turn him into a... A senseless dog?! Where did his grace, his speed, his stealth and intelligence and protectiveness and loyalty go? That was NOT Toothless. Why was my boy treated like a silly pet and nothing else? Did they just up and forget everything he did throughout the course of the franchise? Toothless whose first thing to do when he got a controllable tailfin was go out to find Hiccup's lost helmet that fell in the ocean and then he broke that tailfin because he valued and treasured this friendship over potentially distancing freedom, Toothless who had defeated and befriended multiple feral dragons without being able to fly, Toothless who ate an eel to keep his best friend safe, Toothless who played possum to fool the outcast guards and escape on his own, Toothless who was willing to drown because he couldn't leave Hiccup alone, Toothless who broke the most Intense mind control hold of the Bewilderbeast because the bond he had with Hiccup was stronger. Are we talking about the same Toothless even?
Gah, I just despise that last movie for so many reasons. I might've given it grace marks if it was just the theme being sad but everything in it was wrong and messed up and illogical.

50+ Problems with HTTYD:THW
50+ Problems With HTTYD: The Hidden World
The Books Â
1. âThatâs how the books ended!â No, it actually isnât.
A) The dragons left when Hiccup was an old man, over a long time. Â
B) The movies diverged from the books from the very beginning. Â
C) Dean liked the first line of the prologue and stapled it to his own work, like trying to hammer a square peg into a round hole. Â
2. Itâs a world with dragons, historical accuracy went out the window. Â
3. This ending is only âforeshadowedâ in the 3rd movie itself. Â
The Logistics Â
4. How is Berk this freaking overcrowded? Â
A) Grieving or not, an in-character Hiccup wouldnât hoard dragons like this. Â
B) Theyâre building up one tiny part of one small island. Â
C) Hiccup says âwe have the Alpha!â as if that makes it okay. Â
D) The art book says dragons stayed after paying tribute to Toothless. The alpha is making things worse. Â
5. The Hidden World makes no sense! Â
A) There canât be a giant hole in the ocean that never fills up. Â
B) Plate tectonics and a worldwide network of caves donât mix. Â
C) How will the dragons have enough space? Or food? Or fresh water? Â
D) Moving animals out of one ecosystem into another is a BAD IDEA. Â
6. An entire village packs up and leaves their island (of 300 years) overnight. Â
7. A huge fleet of huge ships can keep up with a flying dragon. Â
8. How much time has passed? They get an awful lot done in a few daysâŠ
The Characters Â
9. Most of the supporting characters are flanderized like hell. Â
10. Snotlout has devolved as a character from the previous movie. Â
11. Astrid is reduced to âprotagonists fianceâ and supportive Love Interest. Â
12. Valka gets no development because they wanted Stoick flashbacks. Â
13. Stoick now believes in a mythical home of dragons that he wants to âseal upâ (not destroy) so dragons and humans wonât fight. Â
14. Hiccup makes terrible spur of the moment decisions that affect everyone around him based on his own emotions and insecurities. Â
15. Grimmel is an incompetent liar who succeeds through plot convenience.
A) He gets the Light Fury onto BerkâŠand then just leaves her there? Â
B) No way in Helheim one guy wiped out a whole species of dragon. Â
C) Especially a species as OP as Night Furies. Â
16. Toothless is dumbed down, a terrible leader and completely OOC. Â
A) Heâd rather play fetch and court the Light Fury than lead his pack. Â
B) As soon as a female he can mate with shows up itâs like Hiccup (his best friend) is nothing. She almost kills Hiccup and he barely reacts. Â
C) Toothless makes his flock go into cages and slavery when the Light Fury is held hostage. Â
The Plot Devices and Holes
17. The LF represents the âcall of the wildâ which must be âBreed.â
A) Sheâs deliberately designed to be as feminine as possible. Â
B) She barely has any discernible personality beyond âwaryâ and âcuteâ. Â
C) Despite saving Hiccupâs life sheâs apparently untrainable. Â
18. Deathgripper venom does whatever the plot needs it to right then. Â
19. It makes no sense for one dragon to be the King of all of them. Â
20. Shouldnât the Hidden World dragons already have an Alpha? Â
21. The LF camouflages by heating her scales up to give them mirror like qualities, butâŠ
A) Being reflective is not the same thing as being invisible. Â
B) Sheâs muzzled at the start of the movie and yet still camouflaged. Â
22. Now Toothless can turn invisible? Using lightning? WTF? Â
23. Toothlessâ new auto-tail holds up against lightning and lasts 10 years. Maintenance? Whatâs that?
24. Boy it sure is convenient that every dragon in the world heard that one roar! Â
The Separation Â
25. The characters just give up. After all theyâve accomplished. Â
A) The riders - by themselves - wipe the floor with that armada. So much for being a major threat. Â
B) After defeating Drago, Hiccupâs resolve is stronger than everâŠafter defeating Grimmel, suddenly itâs too hard? Â
C) No one even tries to protest! Do they not even care about this? Â
26. New Berk is all but inaccessible by boat and has plenty of room. Â
27. It ignores perfectly good parallels and foreshadowing for the dragons to welcome the humans as the humans welcomed them. Â
28. The Hidden World dragons are made overly hostile to humans in an attempt to kneecap any chance of them living there, despite Toothless being the âkingâ and the Berkians having six years of practice at befriending and training dragons. Â
29. Who says there arenât cultures (like China) living in peace with dragons already? What happens to them? Â
The Epilogue Â
30. Hiccup and Astrid are bad parents, giving their children a taste of what itâs like to fly with a dragon and then forbidding it forever. Â
31. Toothless and his family are just conveniently outside when they get there, what are the odds of that? Â
32. Toothless displays hostility towards unarmed humans thatâs worse than when Hiccup first earned his trust in the first movie. Â
33. According to Hiccup, all of the dragons have disappeared. And their eggs? Their skeletons? Did they take those with them? Â
34. Dean has confirmed that in his mind, the reunion wasâŠ
A) A âfinal joyrideâ to show that theyâre both âthrivingâ with wives and kids (cos thatâs the pinnacle of life, right? Marriage and babies?) Â
B) The first time they see each other in a decade during which time Toothless âkind ofâ forgets his old life despite wearing the auto-tail. Â
C) The last time they see each other ever. Because drama. Â
The Themes and Implications Â
35. The movie prioritises romantic love over platonic friendship. Â
36. It uses Toothlessâ attraction to the LF to drive a wedge between him and Hiccup. Â
37. âIf you love them, let them goâ only works if it affects solely the individuals involved, not the whole freaking world. Â
38. Hiccup already let Toothless go in GOTNF and he came back. Â
39. He wasnât keeping Toothless prisoner or diminishing him by being his friend. If anything he was making Toothlessâ life better. Â
40. Itâs possible to âstand on your ownâ and still have a support network. Â
41. Hiccup and Toothlessâ relationship is not clingy or co-dependent. Â
42. The movie just says âToothless is gone so now he has to âstand on his ownâ, ha ha!â Â
43. Grimmel wanted a world without dragons. Now, thanks to Hiccup, thatâs exactly what happens. The villain gets a posthumous victory. His other goal of killing off the Night Furies has also been achieved before the movie even starts, apparently. Â
44. If dragons represent the âotherâ (or the âthemâ of âus versus âthemâ), then Grimmelâs rhetoric is reminiscent of a facist - and he wins. Â
45. The idea that the world will change for the better without anyone actively making an effort to change it is ludicrous. Â
46. How are the dragons even going to know when humans are âreadyâ for them? Â
47. How will humans ever be ready if dragons have faded into myth? Â
The Rebuttals Â
48. âItâs just a kids movie/your opinion!â The thing is⊠Â
A) Plenty of âkids moviesâ donât mess up this badly. There are standards, animated film or not. Â
B) My opinion is based on facts and an understanding of how to write. Â
C) Iâm not saying you canât like it, but itâs still a badly written movie. Â
49. âThe dragons are animals/need to be free!â Â
A) Humans are also animals. And why do dragons get their own world? Â
B) Yep, now theyâre free to live underground in caves forever. Oh wait. Â
C) The dragons were never not free when they lived with the Berkians. Â
50. âThis movie is good cos it made me cry/humans are terrible!â Â
A) Thereâs this little thing called âemotional manipulationâ⊠Â
B) According to this movie, because some people do bad things, we shouldnât try to make things better for anyone ever. Â
C) It is not a profound message to say âlife isnât fairâ, and suggest we shouldnât change things. Â

no but i am SOBBING over gift of the night furyâŠ
Hiccup thinking that Toothless just flew away as soon as he got his new tail fin when really Toothless just wanted to return the favour and do something nice for Hiccup by finding his helmet đ„ș
The look on Astridâs face when she sees that Toothless has returned and knows how happy Hiccup will be
