I like how I can read a greek myth and I'll be like "Oh, well that was nice" but then someone writes a musical based on the same myth and I can feel it rewriting my cells on a molecular level
so was anyone gonna tell me the candle that eurydice lights in any way the wind blows, and that hermes takes away when she and orpheus begins to talk, stays on stage and lit throughout almost all of act one until eurydice goes to hadestown and hermes picks it up, or was i supposed to see it live and cry about it myself
You know what? It's probably controversial, but I'm fine with Anais Mitchell's next musical happening only decades from now. I'm even fine with Hadestown being her only musical. It's a masterpiece and I hope she and everyone involved in creating it are massively proud of it. It's as good as it is because they spent years and years perfecting it, even right up to the West End revival opening where they changed a few lines in Epic III. Sometimes letting things grow slowly overtime and caring for it with love is fine. I'll take one Hadestown over a slew of musicals that were made on a time crunch and that might end up being disappointments. And I think that goes for art in general - being productive really shouldn't matter. What matters is that you make something you're proud of and that brings joy to others.
Just attended the wonderful Hadestown 5th anniversary party! Anais, Rachel, and Ani DiFranco sang a song, the cast sang a song, and all of us sang Cups! I got to catch up w/ some friends, and briefly meet Anaïs. She was super nice! Now getting ready to catch the 1:30 back home and try to stay conscious in my class tomorrow
Alrighty y’all I’m working on a song project about wall song; if any of y’all have interviews or news articles or reviews about the song please send them my way thank you!!!!!!
