Panic Cord [Part 1/3]

Synopsis: When Virgil and his fiancé, Logan, take in Virgil’s ex boyfriend Roman and his boyfriend, Patton, Virgil’s forced to come face to face with his guilt. 

Genre: Hurt/Comfort, Prinxiety, Analogical, LAMP, background logicality

Word count: 2684 out of roughly 8791

Trigger warnings: Implied abusive parents, very heavy guilt, financial problems, potentially unsympathetic Virgil? It’s complicated, everyone makes mistakes.

A/N: this whole fic was inspired by the song Panic Cord by Gabrielle Aplin, 10/10 song

    “Are you serious?”

    “Yes.” 

    Logan gave his stubborn fiance a defiant look. “You’re serious?” He asked again, just to be sure. 

    Virgil nodded insistently. “Yes! Look, we play DND every week, tell me it wouldn’t be badass playing on this.” 

    He gestured towards the coffee table he wanted, an overdramatic, gothic table that would take up half of their living room. 

    Logan quirked an eyebrow. “Okay, but we eat dinner every day. Lunch, too. Imagine trying to balance a cup on one of those ridges. We might as well not even have a table.”

    Virgil held his hands up. “I’d be glad to eat on the floor.”

    He couldn’t help but laugh. “Then why… Are we even here?” 

    Virgil cracked up, too, but shook his head. “I don’t want that boring ass table.” 

    Logan pouted. He liked the table. It was simple, but not ugly, with dark reddish brown panels of wood and black iron supports. It was big enough for them to eat, and play DND, too, albeit a bit cramped. He especially liked that it looked easy to clean, and it was the perfect height for their couch. 

    Virgil hesitated, and then sighed as the bell above the shop’s door dinged. “Okay. Fine. We’ll get that table. But! I get to pick the next three games we play.” 

    Logan smiled. That meant three sessions of DND, with Logan dm’ing. “If that’ll make you happy.”

    As giggling sounded from near the door, Virgil looked up and smiled sheepishly at him. Then his eyes slid over his fiance’s shoulder, towards the couple coming towards them- One excitedly pulling his boyfriend, the other nervously and subtly trying to lead him away. 

Virgil ducked down and behind Logan, whispering, “Shit, shit, shit!” 

Logan looked at him with a raised eyebrow. “What’s going on?”

“That’s my ex-boyfriend.”

Okay, because everyone’s talking about the vidcon dad joke battle with Thomas/Patton. Here’s something I noticed while watching it. I don’t think Patton was the only one at the battle.

Considering Thomas’ reaction to the first dad joke was this:

Before he even pulled out the glasses. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen that face before.

And then later, there’s these:

Annoyance

Focus

Boredom

And the most convincing one in my opinion. Very annoyed.

If that’s not Logan Sanders showing through at the horrible jokes, then I don’t know what is.

I’m kinda bitter bc I was gonna make a post about this earlier and then I didn’t :( have my analysis anyway

Logan’s Part:

Very literal, what actually makes up one’s body. Also promotes Logan’s extremist water agenda. Nice.

Roman’s Part:

Focuses on telling stories, also the only part that doesn’t mention any tangible ingredients.

Virgil’s Part:

Mainly about insecurity and acceptance. Also parallel’s Virgil’s acceptance arc in that people don’t see him clearly/misunderstand him.

Patton’s Part:

Switches into a very optimistic tone, lots of puns here. It also technically doesn’t mention a real world ingredient except in the pun about flower/flour, which I’m counting.

Why did you guys not include lesbians... I dont know if this was on purpose but in the beginning of the video, the flags were shown in order minus the L (G-B-T). Why didn't you guys include us?

Uggghhh we totally bought a lesbian flag. We ordered the pride flags far in advance, but the flags didn't show up until right before it was time to shoot with all of our guests, and unfortunately, the order was wrong. The flags that we did order, but didn't receive were: the lesbian flag, the nonbinary flag, and the asexual flag. It was too late at that point to place another online order. We attempted to do some last minute local shopping to see if we could find the missing flags, but we had no luck finding them. Rest assured, we were really fucking upset about it. I'm sorry that its absence made you feel unrepresented. That said, there were actually quite a few lesbians in the music video, but they held up the rainbow flag because it's also a symbol for lesbians. We never asked for anyone's sexual/romantic/gender identities so that we could hand them a flag-- we had a table full of pride flags, and if someone wanted to grab one, then they were free to do that. So any lesbian/gay women seen in the video holding a rainbow pride flag selected that flag themselves, because they felt that it represented them.

While we did have an ace spectrum flag and a genderqueer flag, there were some asexual and nonbinary people who told us that they didn't identify with either of those flags, so we made a point to animate the colors of their preferred flags around them. We would've done that for any lesbian women who felt similarly, but nobody ever voiced that to us specifically, and we don't think it would've been very appropriate to take it upon ourselves to decide that the lesbian flag is a better fit for someone who picked out the rainbow pride flag. I'm sorry again that you felt unrepresented. That's exactly what we were dreading when we discovered that some of the flags that we had ordered weren't delivered along with the others.

Oh shoot... I didn’t even think about that being a thing, I’ll try to go back and fix it in my fics and try to remember this in the future

If your story has different points of view, is it annoying to switch between them in a single chapter? Thank you!

I do that all the time, so I hope not! lol

seriously, though - as long as the switches are clear and don’t cause confusion you should be fine. I find it helps to use the horizonal rule in between viewpoints to show the flip in perspective. 

Note: don’t use stylistic breaks between viewpoints (or scenes) like a series of asterisks or tildes etc. If someone is using a screen reader, it will read out each symbol that you use. Also using indicators like “Character A’s POV” tend to break up the story and take people out the narrative. Or at least they do for me.

So I was rewatching the Sanders Sides 12 Days of Christmas song and noticed that Logan was wearing a scarf.

He also looks confused by it. I started trying to figure out why he was wearing a scarf and no one else. But then it hit me.

THEY RECORDED THIS IN FRONT OF A GREEN SCREEN!

HE HAS GREEN ON HIS COLLAR!

To avoid Logan having a floating head, they added the scarf. Good job team!

Wait what happened to Thomas Sanders???

Basically, Thomas Sanders (who, btw, is gay) used to be basically the celebrated Unproblematic Fav Uwu of Tumblr and Vine. Everyone loved him, everyone praised him for being inclusive and positive, making fun and unique vines that were appropriate and enjoyable for any age group.

Then one day he got an aphobic ask (I honestly don’t remember what this was even in response to, I think it was some really innocent one-off “I hope asexuals have a good day” type of post or something like that, idek), to which he wrote a long and sincere response that basically summed up to “Hey, that’s not a nice attitude to have, please take a moment to think about how other people must feel and why it’s so important to you to shut them down”

Within literal hours (and this is something I witnessed myself, I was online when it all went down), a smear campaign against him had started. Suddenly even people who had previously been huge fans of him were shit-talking him left and right, declaring him cringey, and grasping at straws to make “callout posts” for him. One popular argument I remember hearing was- And I shit you not, I am not making this up- He was a “pedophile” because he made videos for a family demographic and has a young-looking face, but was 29 or whatever and therefore “pretending to be a kid” or whatever the fuck. He even, gasp, made vines about high school, despite not being a high schooler himself! (Dan Green voice) That’s called “acting”, children!

His popularity never really recovered, and these days he’s mostly considered “cringey” by a large portion of the internet due to the main demographic most of his fans fall into, because you know it’s hip and cool to shame young girls and queer kids for the things that bring them joy.

So yeah, TL;DR used to be pretty well liked by the majority of Tumblr with nobody really having anything bad to say about him, expressed support for aspecs one day, immediately fell victim to exclusionist harrassment and is now at best considered just a cringey teenage girl thing.
