in real life you will probably not respond to harassment in a sexy, clever, scripted way where you come out with the upper hand and everyone claps. you will freeze up and your moment will pass, or your voice will shake when you tell them to stop and you’ll realize two minutes later that you’re gross and sweaty and sticky from the adrenaline. maybe you’ll be on the ball and answer in a way you actually think is pretty smart and get ignored, or they’ll get more aggressive when you mouth off to them. you almost never will walk away feeling victorious. you walk away feeling uncomfortable and relieved that it’s over. you’ll think about it later and imagine that maybe you could have said something else. maybe you’ll feel ashamed that you weren’t quicker-witted, weren’t able to cut them down to size, weren’t able to avoid that lingering sick feeling in the pit of your stomach, as though there’s some kind of magical words you could have said that would have left you feeling less powerless. there really aren’t.

I got to marry my wife, and our pupper was our flower girl. 2.5 years ago this wasn’t possible, as it wasn’t legal in Australia. It rained our whole wedding day, but was so worth it in the end with our phenomenal photographer.

Yeah, but mental illness IS a biological condition.

Theres a lot we don't understand about how neurotransmitters work and we're still discovering new things about our physiology every single day.

We need to accept the fact that our bodies, physically, BIOLOGICALLY, are hardwired to respond to our surroundings. If we see the world falling apart around us, our bodies WILL react. And that's not necessarily what we want as an individual, since it might cloud judgement make rational thought difficult.

What I'm trying to say is that mental illness doesn't fit a binary criterion - it may be a medical condition, a response to environmental triggers OR BOTH. Adverse environmental conditions alter the pathology of an individual's brain. It can hence, be treated biologically.

Trying to shove these complex medical conditions into a binary is an extremely dangerous notion.

A lot of people with mental illness (including me) have an irrational idea about being medicated; trying to say that a mentally ill, irrational mindspace is supposed to be "normal" only makes it a lot worse for people who are vulnerable.

Sure, the world isn't a rainbowy, happy place filled with hugs and marshmallows, but that doesn't mean you let your demons take complete control over you. Because everyone deserves peace.

people who want to argue for the bioessentialization of mental illness (the idea that mental illness is a medical condition, a pathology in the brain, rather than a response to environment) will sometimes say that they have no trauma or environmental “risk” factors, or that so-and-so they know had a happy childhood and no scary experiences, etc, so they must have Feels Bad For No Reason Disease. there’s such a frantic denial in this, such a burying of one’s head in the sand. an invalidation of suffering. 

the world we live in is simply hostile to human life, and all animal life, and plant life, and planetary life. global capitalism has made the world a nightmare for most of its residents–not in the same ways or to the same degrees, but a disconnected, precarious, displacing, overworked, alienated, dying place nonetheless. no one is protected from this fact, whether they have the critical consciousness to identify it or not.
