Haikyuu!! Book Club Hiatus
hey everyone, this was a rather difficult choice to make, but we’re going on another hiatus.
participation and interest in the book club have been dwindling for a while and since we are mostly down to just one mod, keeping this project alive has been rather difficult.
thank you everyone who read with us, we love you all!!
the book club will return if/when there is an increased interest in it - maybe it will take a slightly different form, tho. please please message us if you would like to join us on the admin team or if you have any suggestions for the book club’s future.

the blockers haven't paid enough attention to him yet, so obvs he has to do something about that again
Tumblr media Tumblr media
so this seems like a pretty obvious parallel given how large these close ups are and how soon chapter-wise hinata's is happening after kourai's. that said, I have absolutely no idea what it could mean. maybe that his plans are "demonic" compared to how straight laced kamomedai is, tacking onto what kita has said about people like them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
so first of all hinata’s grand plan to make the blockers probably has something to do with his getting “lost in the crowd” whether it’s jumping out after fading from their notice for a bit. even the miyas are noticing how quiet he’s being at the moment, whether or not that will actually affect kamomedai is the question.
then there’s osamu commenting about how hinata seems like a wild child but he’s actually been putting more thought into what he’s doing on the court. that’s something ennoshita also noticed within the last few chapters about how he was using and timing his jumps in this game, how much more thought he’s been putting in. a distinct grow since he went to the training camp at shiratorizawa. I can’t wait until they (hopefully) get a redo of their stats when they become second years. that will be interesting.
the mirroring of “lost in the crowd” between hinata’s attack and kourai’s musings about his own play style is especially interesting. as both a commentary on kourai’s personality and the difference in the play styles and skill levels of him and hinata. kourai can afford to stand out given the overall level of his team and his own abilities, whilst hinata is also working within his team and his own capabilities - even if he wouldn’t rival kourai one on one. I can’t help but wonder if kourai recognizes hinata’s new approach as an actual tactic - and his own approach to putting the spotlight on himself.
Tumblr media
given how hinata seems to be playing up to a big “notice me” moment it seems like he’ll get this sort of recognition too if he can bring it to fruition.
I can't wait to see it.

HQ!! Book Club!! ch. 358
aaa this tag is such a neat idea I'm excited! More scattered thoughts under the cut:
Tumblr media
Their love language is describing things to each other in gaming metaphors
Tumblr media
I forgot how funny Hirugami can be!
In the last rally, Nozawa's thought process was basically "I can go over my mistakes later. Right now the important things are what I can do now, and what comes next." And poor Akaashi's like "Dang, I fought for my life to reach that conclusion but y'all are already there."
Tumblr media
Then he glances over at their banner, "Habit is Second Nature". I like that. It's as if to say that Akaashi can get there too, eventually. He's just gotta keep practicing that Task Focus.
Tumblr media
I'm not gonna lie, on my first read I was with Atsumu, lol. I thought Kamomedai being good at everything across the board made them less memorable than other teams, which generally had one or two notable strengths. Now I see that's just how it is at the higher levels: you have to be able to do everything well.
This chapter does a good job of illustrating how important the mental game is. Coach Murphy purposely emphasizes mental fortitude as a key skill; the callback to Akaashi's mental struggles; Kita calling them a "good and proper" team for their consistency. As someone who struggles a lot with anxious thoughts, it's a nice reminder that mental toughness and mindfulness are skills that can be practiced. They're not just inborn traits that you have or you don't. I might not be super resilient now, but if I keep at it, maybe I can be.

The Halo of the Moon Shone Brightly Again
Tsukishima indeed won a midair battle with his wits and skills. This chapter got me teary eyed because the halo around the moon shone brightly yet again. Just like in the game with Shiratorizawa, he got an important set’s winning point through an amazing block.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ever since the beginning Tsukishima had some insecurities when it comes to spikers who are the obvious show stealers in a match and insecurities when it comes to little giants. His brother wasn’t given such a chance to show his skills against the little giant of his time. But Tsukishima was able to show the weakness of little giant spikers and was able to give them a taste of their medicine in a stunning midair battle. Tsukishima showed that these monsters are not invincible.
Tumblr media
Tsukishima is a monster wall in his own witty way. In this panel he even looks like he’s looking down with smug face on all them little giants.
Tumblr media
It wasn’t luck nor an easy technique. It was a skill honed through practice and patient observation.
I loved how shocked the spikers were with what he did.
Tumblr media
And how internally amazed all the blockers were.
Tumblr media
His brother did not have a chance. But Tsukishima here in this moment was able to do it for the both of them and defeated the little giant in that midair battle.
And this sign was like a whole conversation carrying a lot of meaning for the two of them. Reminiscent of his brother’s match long ago and little Tsukishima so proud.
Tumblr media
Only this time it is the little brother playing and winning on the court and the big brother up there at the audience watching and cheering proudly.

“I’m gonna get you next time” sounds veeery reminiscent of what Aone has said about stopping Hinata, same as Lev and Inuoka
Tumblr media
and look how much he’s spaaaarkling over it! clearly he’s gonna make a new giant buddy - just like Hyakuzawa and all the rest.
Tumblr media
then there’s tsukishima coming in with one of his throw back lines - as far back as the 3x3 at the very beginning when he commented that they didn’t stand a chance because they were “mere commoners” compared to kageyama and hinata. kind of feel like “mere mortals” might have fit better but  either is wonderful ^^
every time the one liners are mirrored with what they’ve said in the past or you get a throwback moment I swear I get so freaking happy.
this translation and this whole chapter are just insane, fantastic, marvelous!!
* I tagged this for spoilers as best I could, lemme know if I missed some. *

it's really interesting how hinata and tsukki are being paralleled here. it's the very first page of the chapter, and specifically the two panels that contain the chapter's title - and it does set up the theme for the rest of the chapter.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
hinata and hoshiumi are "monsters." a while back, tsukki would've said that there's nothing he can do against people like them (if anyone can find panels for this i will love you forever). but now? now he knows that "even a mere human" like him has a chance. he may not have that special something, "talent" that hinata and hoshiumi have. but that doesn't mean he is helpless.
Tumblr media
tsukki is incredibly smart, and he is very good at understanding other people. he knows how to get on their nerves, but he is also able to read them in other contexts. and this is so impressive! he can tell just by hosihumi's eyes what he's about to do. and on top of being able to read him, tsukki also has the speed to react.
Tumblr media
look at him! his satisfied little smile. he knows he did well. (also look at kageyama. he's so surprised.)
tsukki has come so far (a sentence i keep saying over and over again, but it's true!!) and he no longer gives up when faced with stronger opponents. now, he has the will to fight and the means to do it.

okay can we please all take a moment to look at how far hinata has come?! he's not running around mindlessly anymore, but actually thinking about what would/wouldn't work in terms of attacking and scoring points.
Tumblr media
keep in mind that this is the end of the second set already; everyone's exhausted from playing nekoma earlier and (probably) stressed out about losing the set equals losing the tournament...
and here comes our boy, using his head and showing once again how far his love for volleyball can get him 🏐💕
