One interesting recurring motif I’ve noticed with the various Dark Worlds is that they all seem to have some sort of connection to the concept of Abandonment.
The first Dark World we’ve seen was created from an unused classroom filled with forgotten toys and playthings. King’s plans for World Domination seems to be fueled by resentment from his abandonment and from losing his original ‘purpose’ (being a game for Lightners to enjoy)
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, the computers in the library are usually very much Not Abandoned and are in frequent use. But then the internet in Hometown went down, so now they are suddenly used considerably then they would be. And Queen’s motivation seems to be anxiety about what would happen if the internet never comes back and the Lightners will NEVER use them again. Conceptualized by her as worrying “Oh No What Will The Lightners Do Without Me”
Tumblr media
And then there’s the new Dark Fountain Kris made, which seems to be centered around the Dreemurr Household’s TV.
Which was constantly noted as “dusty”. That is, it’s not really in-use anymore either.
it might be a Thin where either:
The Dark from the Dark Fountains is just sort of… naturally attracted to things that have been abandoned or unused, and is more likely to turn these things to Darkners over objects and locations that are used frequently. That might the in-universe justification for why the newest Dark World seems to be TV-Themed and not like… Generally Dreemur Household Living Room Themed. The TV is the only ‘abandoned’ part of that room, so it’s what the Dark Fountain focuses on.
Dark Worlds can be created out of frequently-used objects just fine, it’s just that those Darkners are likely to be happy and peaceful since they are already fulfilling their 'purpose’ for the Lightners. So the Dark Worlds that would be hypothetically created just won’t have any conflict for Adventure. That might be why Kris turned on the TV before they opened their new Fountain, probably in a deliberate attempt to make the Dark Fountain focus on it. Kris\the Knight might be deliberately seeking out Abandoned Things to turn into Darkners because they know these unfulfilled, insecure and\or resentful Darkners are the ones they can manipulate into helping them in their plan.

Don't you think it's really weird that the police never showed up?
I don't see anyone talking about this. There's theorization that the cops will be in chapter 3's dark world because Toriel called them over. But they said they'd be over soon --
Tumblr media
-- and yet, they don't arrive, seemingly for hours.
Tumblr media
This was what first got me thinking - what if something else is happening in town? What if it's more than just Toriel having her tires slashed?
When the call first starts, she says this:
Tumblr media
She was having trouble getting through to the police station. Perhaps they were getting a lot of calls at this time.
After all, in Chapter 4, the police station is closed. (This image is a teaser from the 2022 status update, if you didn't know!)
Tumblr media
Perhaps they're busy with something that's going on in the town.
Did Kris do more than slash Toriel's tires when they crawled out the window? Did they go to other places as well? Was it someone else, such as the Knight, that caused all these other phone calls?
What I'm getting at is, I think this situation with the police is very strange and warrants a lot more analysis than it gets.
Oh, and a bonus to this theory:
Some theorize that Asgore is going to be in Chapter 3 because of this line from Susie.
Tumblr media
Now, it wouldn't make a lot of sense for Asgore to be there under the circumstances we've previously been imagining Chapter 3 to happen under. Either Asgore just marched over to Toriel's house uninvited in the middle of the night for no reason, the cops decided to leave this case to Asgore, even though he was removed from the force, or some third, more reasonable thing that I can't think of right now happened.
But if there's something strange and perhaps even dangerous going on in this town, of course the first thing on Asgore's mind would be whether his family is safe. And when he sees that the tires are slashed and the door is open, of course he's going to rush in.
I think this would make a lot of sense! :] I now think Asgore will be in Chapter 3.

Deltarune theory: The narrator is against you (the player)
Tumblr media
SPOILERS FOR THE END OF DELTARUNE CHAPTER 2
At the end of Deltarune chapter 2, Kris removes the player-controlled SOUL twice, the first whilst in the bathroom after turning on the sink.
Before turning on the sink however, the flavor text very much guides the player into doing so. From a gameplay standpoint, the above flavor text can be explained as hints to progress the story, but…
Tumblr media
…why, from a gameplay standpoint, would the usual flavor text (the option to flush the toilet) be removed here (as well as the flavor text when interacting with the shower)?
From a narrative standpoint, it’s super interesting - the narrator is impatient, desperate to move ahead with a pre-determined plan.
Tumblr media
Kris wants to remove the SOUL - it’s implied in chapter 1 they do so every night. Toriel’s dialogue in this scene further implies they often go to the bathroom and leave the tap running.
Therefore, whoever is narrating the flavor text is aware of this behavior, and wants it to happen again. They want the SOUL to be removed. Whether this is Kris narrating, or an-as-yet-unidentified entity, one thing seems clear - the narrator is against YOU, the player.

Why the Mysteryman Sprite is (Likely) Gaster
Although the mysteryman sprite being Gaster has long been the most popular in the fandom, there has been much debate over whether it actually is him or not. There has been many interpretations based on sprites ingame, however, I find mysteryman the most likely to be true. Here, I will give examples that point to this;
Firstly, here is a background for the most popular candidates:
Mysteryman. The mysteryman sprite is hidden in a gray room (Room 269) behind a gray door, which can only be accessed when the players FUN value is set to 66. The sprite itself is of a distorted face atop a black body. Attempting to engage in dialogue with the NPC results in it disappearing.
Tumblr media
2. Redacted. Within a secret room in waterfall is a white, stringy NPC; lacking any body features. Upon interacting with it, the NPC says "* [redacted]" in wingdings. The connection is the fact that Gaster speaks in wingdings; although unlike redacted, always in uppercase, like Papyrus.
Tumblr media
3. Gaster Blaster. The connection between it and Gaster is the use of his namesake, which could, like the DT Extractor, indicate that the attack and machine are created in his image (his head), although there is nothing else to back this up.
Tumblr media
Now that we have the candidates, I can move onto the evidence: all of which points to mysteryman.
Removal from merchandise. While, yes, Toby has stated that merch is not canon, that fact that Gaster is removed at all indicates the fact that because he has not yet been shown in context, and because of the nature of his existence (or lack of) as a character, Toby does not want to release merch including him to keep the mystery. In the case of the tarot cards, the main reason, alongside what I stated before, he is removed is likely because by keeping the card depicting him that would, at least in the eyes of the fandom, confirm that mysteryman is his canonical form. However to me, the most intriguing is the vinyl. On the cover, there are many sprites of both characters and objects: one of which being mysteryman, which was deliberately removed and replaced by the SAVE star. Even more interesting is the fact that the redacted sprite was included, but not removed by Toby. This would seem to indicate that mysteryman is of more importance than redacted (and therefore is more likely to be Gaster).
Tumblr media
Also, on the inside of the vinyl, mysteryman, one of Gaster's followers, and an amalgamate were removed and replaced by the same SAVE star. (Off topic, I find the fact that they were replaced by SAVE stars in particular to be interesting. Is this a nod to the fact that Gaster likely experimented with Determination before Alphys? For the second one, it could also be referencing Lemonbread, who appears from a SAVE star.)
Tumblr media
Connection to the number 6, and the Mysteryman room. Gaster has an intrinsic relationship to the number 6, for a few different reasons: One; via datamining, it can be found that Gaster has hidden battle stats: all of which are repeating 6's. Two; Room 264, which contains text in all uppercase wingdings, is titled as "room_gaster." Three; in Undertale and Deltarune, every character has a "typer value" attached to their text. In both games, Gaster's typer value is 666. Four; all of the Gaster Followers can only be found when the games FUN value is set to 61, 62, or 63.
Tumblr media
You know what else is related to the number 6? Mysteryman. The number of its room is 269, and it can only be found when the FUN value is set to 66 (with a 10% chance). Redacted is also related to the number 6, although not as specifically: when in its room, if you walk south, you will enter the "Soundtest room" that can play "Gaster's Theme:" which can also be accessed when the FUN value is set to 65.
Tumblr media
Deltarune failsafe text. In Deltarune, there are sets of "failsafe texts" that will display if a certain text fails to load properly. In it, a three part poem can be found: "* Is that a cut on your face, or part of your eye?" "* The gash weaves down as if you cry." "* The pain itself is reason why." This poem seems to be referring to the mysteryman sprite, specifically, which has two "cuts" on its eyes; one weaving up, and the other down. While this may be referring to a different character, the only one that fits this description is Jevil. However, I find this unlikely for one main reason: grammar.
Tumblr media
The poem specifically mentions only one gash that weaves down. If it were talking about a character with two, wouldn't it be grammatically correct to say "the gashes weave down" and "are those cuts"? While, yes, mysteryman has two gashes, only one weaves down, so I find it much more likely that this poem is referring to him rather than Jevil, who has two that weave down. Also, there are other failsafe texts. One, of which states "* You can't read these symbols…" "*Or maybe it's the handwriting." This is a reference to a piece of text in Sans' lab in Undertale, when interacting with the blueprints on his table. The use of the words "read" and "symbols" indicates that the text the blueprints are written in is in wingdings: a font exclusively made for symbol characters. While this is not a certain piece of evidence like the others, both the poem and blueprints text, which are referencing things in Undertale, being included at all in Deltarune seems to emphasize their importance and, subsequently, Gaster's importance to the story.
Conclusion:
Considering all of these pieces of evidence, and the fact that the other candidates have nowhere near as much, it is increasingly likely that the mysteryman sprite is, indeed, Gaster or is, at least, a part of him. Because an important part of his story is the fact that when he was erased from existence, he was "shattered across time and space." Due to being shattered, there may be many pieces of him out there: mysteryman being just one of which. But to me, that sprite is, based on everything I've covered, the most likely one to be him. As we're currently only 2/7 chapters into Deltarune, we're likely going to get more facts that will either disprove or help prove this theory. For now, only time will tell :)
~Kat
Also, I must add something: this doesn't mean you can't portray Gaster differently!! This post is simply my addition, based on facts from UT and DR, and my personal subjective reasoning. Also also! I've used Tumblr for a while, but this is my first real post. So sorry if the format or etc isn't great, I apologize-- I'm still learning, haha

a messy chart displaying how the many motifs in Deltarune are (potentially) connected to each other.
of course, this isn't everything (missing Ralsei, Noelle, Kris, and the Weird Route's connections) but it does cover a great majority of things related to the biblical and greek mythological themes.
text boxes on the chart below (warning, large blocks of text):
text on the right of the blue God Bubble: "Satan is imprisoned within the Abyss (Revelation 20:2-4)"
text on the right of the purple Chaos Bubble: "God’s separation of Heaven and Earth creates a gap/the Abyss, which is also known as Chaos in Christian theology."
text below the red Satan Bubble: "Susie has crown motifs, which she shares with the Beast (Sea) and the Great Red Dragon"
text to the left of the white Tartarus Bubble: "Gaster’s connection has direct connection to the Beast out of the Earth. The Beast (Earth) puts a mark upon people’s right hands, the number of the beast being 666. The number is also the number of a man. (Revelation 13:17-18)"
text to the right of the white Tartarus Bubble: "??? has symbols related to the DR Titans, and the area resembles Tartarus and Sheol."
text below the teal Godzilla Bubble: "Tartarus, where the Greek Titans are imprisoned, is hidden within Gaia. DR Titans presumably hidden within the Earth too"
text directly right of the teal Godzilla Bubble: "Godzilla is known as “King of the Monsters”, and awakens from the sea."
text directly below the gold Lion Bubble: "Susie’s Roar ACT references lions, and has relation to the mouth. The Beast out of the Sea has a mouth “like that of a lion” (Revelation 13)"
text below the blue Ocean Bubble: "Ocean.ogg plays when entering ???"
text on the right of the pale purple Jevil Bubble: "Jevil’s Devilsknife (a scythe). Susie wields this"
text on the right of the green No Symbol: "Cronus castrated Uranus with the scythe/sickle, separating him from Gaia"
text directly below the green No Symbol: "Cronus tosses his father’s gonads into the Sea"
largest text on the far right side of the chart: "Chaos: In Hesiod’s Theogony, (possibly) out of Chaos came Gaia, Tartarus, and Eros, and certainly “birthed”  Nyx and Erebus. Hesiod’s Chaos was also a place, underground and gloomy, and where the Titans resided. In Aristophanes’s comedy, Birds, from Chaos and Eros came the race of birds. (Wings, and things related to birds are a recurring motif in Deltarune) Pherecydes of Syros interpreted Chaos as water, shapeless. (Water appears as the background during Deltarune’s Intro Sequence) And in the Roman poet’s Ovid’s Metamorphoses, Chaos was a formless mass where all the elements were cluttered together. Latin to English translated, from Wiki: “Before the ocean and the earth appeared— before the skies had overspread them all— the face of Nature in a vast expanse was naught but Chaos uniformly waste. It was a rude and undeveloped mass, that nothing made except a ponderous weight; and all discordant elements confused, were there congested in a shapeless heap” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaos_(cosmogony) "
bonus thing not included on the chart:
Jevil has a couple of connections to Ovid's narrative poem, Metamorphoses. when Jevil transforms into Devilsknife, he says "metamorphoses". Ovid's poem also talks about Chaos, which is Jevil's element and phrase.
God's creation week seems to share aspects of the Greek Titan's mythology. the Prophecy of Delta Rune is very similar to the true Titan mythology, therefore it parallels creation week.
