Social Action in the Modern Age
The amount of things happening all around the world each day is almost insane. With the natural disasters, political problems, civic action and a whole bouqet of other considerations to boot, it can be really diffficult to make sense of all that is happening. Yet, the world of social media expects people to care all the same, and uses its various resources to spread around as much information as humanly possible. Frankly, i found this both scary and astounding.
The world that we are now living in has become more interconnected than ever, while also allowing each person to speak about what they consider important and gain a public voice. Organizations, similarly, now have more public outreach than ever, using social media and the online sphere to their advantage. At the same time, however, i personally feel that as individuals, many are starting to feel both tired and insignificant with the amount of things going on all around.
It can be especially diffficult to process so much information about things that dont directly affect oneself while also caring about them. I often hear people saying they are powerless or hopeless because of this, which is even more terrible. I think that we, as the users of the internet, should normalize not always caring about every present issue of the modern world. The capacity for human empathy is limited, and it is unreasonable to expect people to be able to extend their sympathies for every single tragedy in the world, however sad that might be. If you are one of the people stuck feeling that way, don’t worry. I know it is hard to care, and it is even harder to find out what you can do. You CAN and SHOULD conciously choose topics that you want to focus on if it becomes too overwhelming, or take time to tend to your own mental health.

I have not seen many people talk about this, but Haiti has recently been hit by an absolutely devastating earthquake, leaving many families without security and shelter. While some talk about it on twitter and facebook, the actions of singular individuals and their outreach is limited. If you can, you should really consider supporting relief support organizations, who are far more equipped to deal with this isse. I’ve attached some of the relevant resources to donate to the victims, if anyone can chime in with their own contribution.

I know that this is somewhat different from my usual style of content, but i just wanted to share. Since the talks about gender and sex and their differences have persisted over the years (one can even argue they have increased in frequency thanks to the popularity of social media), it can be useful to remind yourself the differences in specific terminology people use.

George Orwell's "1984," it's hitting the bestseller lists again. It's a great book, but it's not the correct dystopia for the 21st century. What we need to fear most is not what artificial intelligence will do to us on its own, but how the people in power will use artificial intelligence to control us and to manipulate us in novel, sometimes hidden, subtle and unexpected ways.

With the world still living amidst a global pandemic, it can be difficult to become an actor of change and initiate any form of organized political action. I have recently found an interesting article that talks about this topic and offers some interesting tips on what you can do in particular, and i wanted to share it with as many people as i could.
