as a protestant there’s some pretty crummy portrayals of protestants in media but honestly i get sooooo angry on behalf of catholics for all the horror movies revolving around nuns and priests and the catholic church specifically. like. Had a professor that used that exact "Use children not kids, because a kid is a baby goat" thing on us. Part of her reasoning was that it was too informal to use in a paper. The problem was that it wasn't us using it in a paper, but us just having a casual conversation.

Also hasn't kid as informal slang for children been around since the 1500s? With it gaining common/popular use in the 1800s?

one time i had a dream that tiktok users deemed “kid” as a slur and that you HAD to refer to them as minors otherwise you would get harassed and threatened with doxxing. you couldn’t say “when i was a kid” anymore for example you HAD to say “when i was a minor” instead

the first day of my hand drafting class in my senior year of college, after the prof taught us how to frame up on the drafting table and went over how to use the tools we'd bought, he had us all take our pencils and make a mark on the top right corner of the vellum. then he walked us through the setup steps - the border, the title block, etc.

and he told us to erase the mark.

when someone - rosie, i think - asked what the mark was for he smiled.

"if you give a novice student an expensive, blank piece of paper, they panic. they think if i start using that i will ruin it. so the first thing i want all of you to do, any time you stare at a blank piece of paper, is to ruin it a little and take the pressure off yourself. pencil erases. anxiety has to be managed."

i hated that man for a myriad of reasons, but that was some of the best advice i've ever been given.
