Five hundred years of life on this planet had taught Derek what its like to fight to survive. Never had he met anyone like Selena. He wasn't willing to argue with her anymore, not only because it would make them dealing with each other more difficult, but because they came from two different worlds. He tried to remember the struggles Mikhail and his wife dealt with while she was still human and learning about their world, and how hard it was for both of them. He might find it useful speaking to both of them. Their men were demanding, their lives were long, and felt even longer without their partner. All of his new emotions were hard to deal with, so he focused on something else instead, trying to clear his mind before speaking again, not to let his emotions get the best of him. He sighed, not out of frustration, but exhaustion. "We come from different worlds Selena, but what I do know is what its like to be hunted, to fight to survive." Derek shifted closer to her, "It would take a while to explain everything to you, I've obtained so much knowledge but nothing has prepared me to meet someone like you." He crossed his arms, it was the truth, one he wasn’t prepared to face. “I want you to feel safe, and to never have to run again. I will try my best to be as patient as you need me to be, and hopefully answer some of your questions.”

Selena flinched a little when Derek touched her face, but she didn’t pull away from him. She did wrinkle her nose when he was vague about the red wine. “I… listen, I appreciate you helping me out, but I really don’t know you. I mean, you could be like all the other assholes, just smarter. So I don’t think I’m gonna drink that.” She pulled her legs up to her chest under the blankets, wrapping her arms around them as he spoke. She nodded a little and gave him another small smile. “I feel better. Better than I have in a while.” She pressed her cheek to her knee, frowning almost comically. “I can’t help it! I’ve spent the last like four years basically living on the run, not knowing when I’m gonna have to pick up and run away from another stalker. That mindset is going to take more than a good sleep and kindness to get rid of.” She sighed and pushed her hand through her heavy waves. “I get that you’re trying to help me- still don’t get why but… but it’s better if you don’t keep things from me. If you keep things from me and I know, I’m just going to freak out and try and fill in the blanks.” She chewed her lip for a moment. “Can you at least tell me why you’re helping me? I mean, I know you said it was common decency, but you took me to your home and kept me same. That’s way more than common decency. Common decency is taking me to the hospital, maybe staying with me and giving me a ride home after. Not this.” She paused for a moment before she hesitantly reached out, slipping her tiny hand into one of his massive hands. The size difference was comical. “If you want to help me you need to talk to me. Ok?”
Derek raised a brow at her and emptied the contents of the glass, drinking it himself before setting it aside. “I get it, you’ve been through a lot, and trust me, I don’t blame you for wanting answers.” He took a deep breath trying to sort out what to say, and how to say it. “If I took you to a hospital you would have died there. You should have died, but you didn’t. I told you we have similar abilities, mine a little more well rounded than yours.” Derek sighed, slightly frustrated that she didn’t know just how special she is, but again, she didn’t know anything about his people. “I told you, you’re special, its my job to look after you. You really don’t know how rare you are.” He almost scoffed, “If you made even the smallest effort to open your mind to mine you’d know enough about me to know I’d never hurt you. You’d also have an open pathway to my mind, I wouldn’t be able to lie to you, and even so, I haven’t.” Even though he didn’t want to, he opened the floor for them to have an open discussion. “If you want to talk then talk, ask whatever you need to get your clarity, all I ask is that you listen, and try to understand. I’m here to help you, if you run from truth you’re seeking it won’t do either of us any good.”

Selena was so exhausted, mentally and physically, that nothing he did woke her. He would have had to try to wake her to get her there. So when she finally started waking up, it was because she was fully rested. That was such an alien feeling, she didn’t really believe it. She squeezed her eyes closed, waiting for the wave of tired to wash over her. When it didn’t she frowned and opened her eyes. She didn’t recognize where she was and had a moment of panic, gripping the sheets tightly. When Derek spoke she actually squeaked, caught off guard. She pushed herself up into a sitting position and scooted away from him a little. “Wh-remind me where we are again?” She pushed her hand through her heavy curls, getting them out of her face and then looked at the glass in his hand. “What is it?” She leaned in and actually sniffed it. “Smells a little like wine but it’s weird looking.” She looked back up at him. He was so much bigger than her, it was still scary. “How long was I out for?” She looked outside, seeing it was still dark, but she was so well rested it was hard to judge. She sucked both her lips between her teeth as he asked if she was hungry, only now realizing that she was. She nodded a little bit. “I am, actually. But I… I’m still really confused.” She rubbed her face and sighed. “It’s been so long since I had a good sleep…” She smiled a little at him, probably for the first time since they’d met. “Thank you.”
chuckled when she squeaked, “My home. Its safe.” He laid a reassuring hand on her cheek and brushed his thumb gently over her skin. “Red wine, a blend I doubt you’ve had before, good for the heart.” He wasn’t sure how to explain that she’d been asleep a whole a day, but she’d needed the rest. “A while piccola. You look a lot better, refreshed.” Now that her wounds were healed, he noticed there was more pigment in her skin. She had lost a lot of blood and he’d worried she’d need a few extra days rest. Derek shook his head, “Don’t worry about whatever’s going on in that head of yours, we’ll get you something to eat and discuss anything you’re confused about after.” Derek’s expression softened at the small smile, “Don’t thank me. I’m just glad you’re well rested.”

Selena gave him a puzzled look. “’Special’ huh? Well I’d much rather be fucking normal, thanks. Anxiety disorder is bad enough, this shit makes my life a nightmare.” She watched him as he spoke, becoming even more confused, and suspicious, when he said he didn’t care about money. She let her head rest on his shoulder, unable to keep holding her head up anymore. She was so tired. She closed her eyes and sighed sadly. “I just want to sleep. That’s it, all I want to know is the inside of my fucking eyelids. Do you know how long it’s been since I was able to have a decent night’s sleep?” She knew there was so much he wasn’t telling her, but she was just too tired. Her head hurt, she’d been attacked again, and this life was just catching up more and more to the poor thing. “You promise to take care of me?” Her words were slightly slurred as she fought off exhaustion with less and less success by the second. “I still don’t trust you completely… just keep me safe… I need sleep…” Her poor tiny body just gave out, unable to stay awake any longer, she fully relaxed in his arms as sleep took her.
Derek watched her as she started to fall asleep. “I promise.” He would do any and everything in his power to make sure she stayed safe, even if she didn’t trust him. Once she fell asleep, Derek sped them to his house taking her up to one of the guest rooms, making her as comfortable as possible. He knew she wouldn’t like it, but he used his methods of healing to slow her heart rate. He was pushed from her mind before he got the chance to finish healing her, and used the soil from his home to finish closing what was left of her wounds. By the time she woke up they would be healed, and he was hoping that would make her feel better.
As Selena stirred from her sleep, Derek gently wiped the soil away from where her wounds had been. The healing properties in the soil worked much better than he was expecting and there was no scarring. He handed her a glass filled with crimson liquid. “Here.” Wine and his blood, it would make her stronger. Though he doubted she’d enjoy knowing what it was. “You were out for quite a while.” It was already the next night, and he had spent the day in deep sleep as well, after putting guards up around the house to keep her safe. “Hungry?”
