Hands-on Assignment: Script Writing Part 2
Itās a Wednesday afternoon. AVA, CHELSEA, and SEAN are sitting in a lounge on campus after taking an exam.
AVA: That was so ass.
CHELSEA: I know, right? I studied a decent amount, and I felt like I was guessing on every other question.
SEAN: Hate to be that guy, but I didnāt really study, and I didnāt think it was that bad.
CHELSEA: Okay? Pop off Jimmy Neutron.
AVA: Yeah, itās giving ābrain blastā. (AVA holds her two fingers to her temple and squints as if sheās concentrating. AVA and CHELSEA laugh.)
SEAN: Man, I just love talking to you guys (he shakes his head and laughs).
CHELSEA: I really need to start the next paper.
SEAN: Oh yeah. I low-key forgot about that.
(They all take out their laptops.)
SEAN: (He scoffs) Of course, my laptopās almost dead. Fuck, I guess Iāll just have to wait until I get home. (SEAN puts his laptop away and takes out his phone.)
CHELSEA: What are you guys doing this weekend? I was thinking we could do a movie night on Friday and then maybe go to Jakeās St. Pattyās thing on Saturday.
SEAN: Iāll let you know ācause I might be going home this weekend. My dad wants me to cover my sisterās shift at the restaurant.
CHELSEA: Itās fine if you donāt want to hang out.
SEAN: No, I want to. I honestly might not even go home.
AVA: How much bread did you make from it last time, though?
SEAN: Barely enough to get gas and groceries, so more like crumbs than bread.
CHELSEA: What about you? (She gestures to AVA.) You have anything going on?
AVA: Iāll have to see, too, because Iām trying to finish this paper by Sunday.
CHELSEA: You know what? Itās actually okay if you guys canāt come. I think Iāll ask Diana. I feel like havenāt seen her in a while. Like she literally stopped talking to us. She doesnāt even greet us, she doesnāt say hi or anything. Itās just weird.
(AVA and SEAN share a knowing look.)
CHELSEA: What?
SEAN: She told us not to say anything, but itās probably because of what you said at her birthday party.
CHELSEA: I honestly donāt remember much, so stop being weird and just tell me.
SEAN: I mean, you basically told her youāre happy sheās not with Ethan anymore because now you can hang out with her again.
CHELSEA: Oh (pause). Is it bad if I think thereās nothing wrong with what I said?
AVA: Yeah, kind of.
CHELSEA: Well, I know it sounds kinda bad, but I was probably just trying to say that I missed her.
SEAN: We know, but there are definitely better ways to say that.
AVA: And it probably would have been good to do that, ya know, not on her birthday.
CHELSEA: Yeah, I guess. Itās whatever. Iāll figure it outā¦
(Thereās a heavy pause.)
AVA: Um, I have to go get something to eat before my next class, but Iāll see you guys on Friday.
SEAN: Yeah, See ya.
(CHELSEA waves and smiles lightly. SEAN and CHELSEA watch AVA leave. CHELSEA takes out her phone.)
CHELSEA: TikTok is getting so unbearable. I swear I keep hearing the same three songs on repeat. Also, so many people are saying that Gen Z is aging like milk.
SEAN: Yeah (he laughs lightly). I have to get to my next class. See yaā
CHELSEA: I can tell Avaās pissed at me, and I don't know if you feel the same way but whatever. I said I was gonna figure it out and I will.
SEAN: I know. Iāll see you on Friday. (He exits.)

For my costume, I chose to use the main character of On The Exhale. I wanted to play on the idea that you can never judge a book by its cover. For that reason, sheās slightly more dressed up than she was in the version we watched. Her outward appearance is supposed to show someone who has it together but on the inside, she has completely lost herself. Her long black skirt, gray sweater, and black shoes represent how sheās wrapped up in grief. Similarly to the original costume, I wanted to have at least one bright color popping through. Her red shirt symbolizes the anger that feels inside. I also added a necklace with an āMā pendant for her son Michael. Also, her hair is tied up in a bun and I picture her wearing little to no makeup. In her time of grief, she has become wrapped up in trying to figure out what exactly happened during the shooting, so she is much more focused on that.
