@traumas-tmntober-2024 day 15: Phobia
After the events of the show Raph def has a fear of heights but for others. He watched Zog fall to his death, Casey fell like three or four stories trying to save him(bro is not human idk how he’s alive), and watch his dad fall to his death….this poor kid the writers really popped off w traumatizing this turtle it’s fantastic

THEORY TIME!
In Requiem, Splinter splits up the team into 2 groups. He brings Slash, Casey, April, and Raph with him to chase after Shredder, and leaves everyone else to go after the enemies at the amusement park. I know story-wise why they had Splinter split them up (because they were killing off Splinter), but lore-wise, it makes no sense why Splinter wouldn’t have everyone go after Shredder to finally end things.
Especially since he had been talking to Leo and only Leo about how he knew it was his time soon. So why did he bring Raph with him? Why specifically him if he wasn’t going to bring all of his sons? He normally favors Leo in things, why did he send him away?
I think it’s because he was counting on Raph to kill Shredder after Shredder killed him.
Raph has always been the rebel, the emotional one, the one to resort to punching when nothing else works. He’s always been the one to dismiss Splinter’s teachings of honor and not seeking revenge. Raph is strong — he easily beat Shredder in a fight when he was mind controlled to go as hard as he could, he held Slash back and had a casual conversation with Leo, he’s gotten back up from being electrocuted and thrown into concrete, he’s strong. When the turtles first thought Splinter died, Raph started hitting metal bars in an attempt to get to Shredder, and almost hit Mikey in his blind rage just because Mikey was the closest to him.
The other turtles usually stop Raph. Splinter intentionally sent them away. And the ones Splinter brought with him? Casey? Always one to fight first and think later. Slash? Grew up on Raph’s worst rage and is willing to fight and protect no matter what. April? Despite her psychic powers, I don’t think she has the strength to stop all three of them, not without her alien crystal.
Splinter was probably counting on her to contact the others (with her being the only one to not enter a blind rage) while the others killed Shredder for once and for all. The only reason that didn’t happen was because Raph was hurt and physically couldn’t fight anymore. I know Leo’s the one that eventually finishes Shredder off, but… in the moment, Raph was practically guaranteed to go after Shredder. Leo? There’s a slight chance he wouldn’t have. He’s the most honorable, after all.

Leo is at least 90% of Raph’s impulse control.

Leo just grabs him out of instinct at this point.

was writing Shinigami and had the thought of like, "I wonder how common it is to speak English fluently if you're Japanese?" So I looked it up and

not common!!! which does make sense, esp since English and Japanese are such different languages, but like. I believe even more strongly now that the english in TMNT 2012 is partially non-diegetic.
Like, I already HCed that in Tale of the Yokai everyone is speaking Japanese, and the English is just for our benefit, but like. that basically confirms it, right? Like there's no way EVERY character in that episode is fluent in English. meaning the turtles MUST be fluent in Japanese, at least enough to communicate as much as they did
so, any time the turtles are communicating without April, Casey, or another English-only-speaker, I'm going to say they COULD be speaking Japanese, and it's only English bc it's an American TV show. Turtles talking among each other? Japanese. Splinter and Shredder's confrontations? DEFINITELY in Japanese. Leo and Karai? Could be in Japanese. just saying.....

i think one of the best qualities of the tmnt fandom is, i think, a generally wider willingness to Get Weird With It. it's already canon that the main characters are mutated turtles, which in turn necessitates mutation lore, which gives way to aliens, magic, monsters of all kinds, body horror, blatant queercoding, philosopical questions about what does and doesn't constitute a human, a person, a being deserving of life, and that's all just stuff that happens in canon!
so, of course we're willing to elaborate on all sorts of bullshit, of course we're willing to get gayer and freakier about it, of course we're excited to elaborate more on dark or complicated ideas. of course we're happy to make our OCs and the canon characters little fucked up guys.
i think we ought to remind ourselves of that and go insane more. everyone go insane more
