Religious Magical Girls

It may surprise some people to discover that many magical girls are religious - and many of them have powers that are influenced by their religion too! Here’s a handy list of examples of magical girls who are religious.

Sailor Mars of Sailor Moon - Shinto - 1991

Although modern day shrine maidens are not inherently religious, Shinto practices are always part of the position, and shrine maidens even today are viewed as female shaman or oracles. In the case of Rei, aka Sailor Mars, it’s heavily implied that she is a follower of Shinto.

Even in human form, Rei’s Shide - papers used in Shinto rituals - have power against evil.

Thief Saint Tail -  Catholic - 1995

Miemi, aka Saint Tail, and attends  St. Paulia’s Private School alongside her best friend and Nun-in-training,  Seira. Although the denomination of the school is never outright stated, the name, as well as motifs, design, and beliefs throughout, all heavily imply that it is Catholic.

Physical violence (1:00; hitting with a pickaxe, this can also be seen from c!Tommy's POV of the incident)

Power imbalance (1:34; "I'm in charge. I'm in charge.")

Pushing buttons (2:03; the fl@tty p@tty thing, which is previously established in earlier streams to be a boundary violation/trigger)

Tuning Out (subtle but repeatedly, in most cases c!Q falls silent and lets c!Schlatt talk)
