Maybe I need to stop hating myself and talk to a professional.
ADHD is spending your whole life being told that you're not doing your best and that you could do better if you tried harder and worked harder until you believe it yourself, becoming convinced that your your best work is actually only your average, and there's a mythical, hypothetical, never-before-seen Your Best, which is surely the work of gods.
So you end up with this inflated ego and stalwart belief that you should be capable of curing cancer, discovering new planets, composing new opera pieces to take the world by storm, if you only tried harder. But for some inexplicable reason, you simply won't put your mind and focus on it, and now you hate yourself for not being the spectacular specimen you were taught you ought to be.
And that's why you end up having these conversations with your therapist where they are like "normal people don't put this kind of demands and expectations on themselves", and you dead seriously fucking answer
"Yes, but I'm not normal people."

As a warm climate human who now lives in a cold climate, I can attest that instincts are not always on your side. My first winter I thought it would be a good idea to put on flip flops to go check the mail, ignoring the fact that it has been snowing all morning. I slipped on the first step and slid down the entire concrete staircase. My left side, from ankle to shoulder, was purple for a week.
humans are weird- relearn your reflex
i know his probably died a long time ago, but who cares i want to write this. also I apologize if someone already did this. i was reading some of these post one of them was called fall like a human about walking but it made me think of the way that you shouldn't fall on ice then learned reflexes
humans have a bunch of reflexes and instincts that we get from different places that's how we function without always having a billion thoughts at once. i don't just mean breathing and automatic systems we also do stuff like opening doors on instinct.
we learn them from different places. some come from survival (eg. ducking when something is coming at your head). some come from trauma (eg. flichting at a fist) some come sociatally (eg. walking with your hands free to catch yourself if you fall) and some we teach ourselves (eg. the entire game of volleyball)
in some cases these reflexes work against each other so we have to reteach ourselves the one we think would be better to use.
imagine aliens reacting to this.
alien glorp: human asher what is volleyball
asher: it's a human sport where 2 groups of 6 stand on either side of a net and pass a hard ball back and forth without catching it.
glorp: what do you mean without catching it?
Asher: well the people who play will put their arm into these triangle shapes and bounce it off their forearms that's called a pass, *Asher demonstrated the motion* alternately they will make a diamond shape with their fingers above their head and pass it that way, i think that's called a set but it's been a while since i played, *asher mimics the motion for setting. and the last way is to hit it down really hard with your wrist *asher makes final spiking motion*
glorp: if the ball is hard wouldn't it hurt
asher: like all heck it hurts, whenever amatures play their arms get bright red from the impact and if you don't know what you are doing you could even break your fingers or sprain your wrist
glorp: if it is so easy to get hurt doesn't it go against your survival instincts? you do know what a survival instinct is right?
asher: yes i know what those are. and this game absolutely goes against ours the people who play it have to spend a lot of time relearning their instincts in order to learn how not to avoid or catch the ball that's what makes the game so hard
glorp: what is wrong with your species?
or
the crew is preparing to depart the ship and explore an ice world for something. their resident cold weather human, sam, is briefing them about the mission.
sam: and remember guys break your fall and break your wrists
glorp raises a hoof: what does that mean?
sam: it's an expression back home really it's just a reminder to the humans to fight their instincts to break their fall with their hands if they slip on the ice because the impact could easily shatter our bones
glorp: then why is that your instinct
sam: evolution on a different climate
glorp: wha-
sam: no time to explain lets go
