i like this snippet from Joyce Carol Oates’ essay ‘the Witchcraft of Shirley Jackson’;

‘…her witchery appears to be self-invented(…) with no connection to satanic practices, still less to Satan. (Merricat is too willful a witch to align herself with a putative higher power, especially a masculine power.)’

i love the idea of inventing your own witchery, making your own rituals, even if it is just things like always bringing a home baked treat when you’re invited to someone’s house, collecting your own favourite words and phrases, collecting little things like petals and scraps of fabric and corks and buttons as little safeguards and treasures. the thought of being a ‘willful witch’ is nice.. to ‘fuck the system’’ and go about your business with purpose and vision, by your own rules as long as they are good ones..
