Hello friends! Thank you for joining me on my Senior Capstone journey to tackle the issue of internet crimes against children!

To my fellow graduating class... I have seen the fruit of everyone's labor this semester, and I am SO HONORED to call you all my classmates! Your passions and hard work shine through! God bless you, all. I pray that the Lord will bless you in your future endeavors in the field that He has called you to serve in.

What I accomplished this past week:

Added a couple things!

UPDATE 1: Before, I only used "lorem ipsum" (placeholder text) for large bodies of written content.

Now, I added REAL TEXT! 🎉

For the main articles, the text is no longer placeholder gibberish!

Final paper update!

This morning, I finished writing my first draft for my final paper!!! 🎉 I turned it in to the Noeau Tutoring Center for constructive criticism, and they swiftly got back to me in the afternoon! 🦉❤️

They left a lot of valuable feedback, so I quickly made those edits. I shall turn in my second draft to the Noeau center again tomorrow morning. Once I get feedback and make the iterations based on that feedback, I shall send it to Sharla for further inspection 🙏🏻

Kudos to the Noeau Center for amazing service and for being so quick! 👏🏻👏🏻

Week 11-12: 4/3/23, 11:26pm

Yes, this is a late update. I was in Seattle from 3/22-3/28, and I am responsible for letting the due dates escape my mind.

Whatʻs been happening for the past 2 weeks?

Aside from going on a side-quest to Seattle...

I have completed my outline for my final paper!

Usability testing! (It worked out, because most of the testing took place while I was in Seattle, so I was hands-off majority of the trip)

Whatʻs going on for the next 2 weeks?

Writing, writing, writing, writing, & writing.

Aubmit a draft for my paper to the No'eau Center tomorrow, or on Thursday.

Start working on my final presentation

Gather my deliverable assets

Hiccups/Hurdles/AHA moments

As much as the Seattle side-quest was refreshing and allowed me to spend time with loved ones during their transition period, it did throw me off a bit and made me lose track of due dates this past week. Because I stay up late in Hawaii and go to sleep at 4am HST sometimes, it translated horribly with the 3-hour difference. I did not get a lot of sleep during the trip. Once I got home, I was VERY tired, and the due dates did not cross my mind. I take full ownership.

Week 9-10: 3/13/23, 4:09pm

These past two weeks have been THE best for me. Usually, I hear students become fatigued, tired, & burnt out at this point of the senior project. However, I am quite the opposite-- I feel so invigorated and clear-minded. I hope this momentum continues :')

what did I accomplish this week?

Completed my prototype screens

Finalized my prototype and enabled usability

Created a usability testing survey for solo testing

Created a usability testing calendar to schedule one-to-one testing

Created a few promotional graphics

what are my next steps?

interesting vibes.

........... After much deliberation, I have been sold on the yellow aesthetic after all. 💛

Sure the yellow may be giving "crime scene caution tape", but it shines. It stands out; it's a nice contrast; it's a conversation starter. I'm in love with the yellow (tangerine yellow, #FFCC00). I'm not bored when I look at the style guide.

The gold and subtle indigo is an unintentional nod to my HS alma mater. 👀

the "shades-of-blue" LUMI aesthetic is giving "university" which may not be attractive to younger generation.

I think yellow is also a better fit for the LUMI brand because it attracts the attention of my demographic-- the yellow can become a big part of the overall marketing and brand identity.

I got the word "LUMI" from the word "illuminate" (NOT "illuminati" LOL). I thought of the word "illuminate" for this brand and app about online safety because 1) it's important to shine light on issues that would rather be kept in the dark, and 2) I want the community of LUMI users to be a light in their own lives and to those around them. Keeping these things in mind, yellow makes sense because it is associated with "light".

The topic of my Capstone is online safety. How can technology be used to educate the younger generation about the dangers of online solicitation?

Hello friends, I hope you are doing well :)

I, too, resonate with the shock at how VERY LITTLE time we have left for our Senior project. I am super proud of you for making it this far, and you are doing a great job!! Keep your eyes fixed on the tasks that you have to do today, as tomorrow's worries will be their own in it's time :) Put one foot in front of the other. We WILL get through this!

As for me, I lowkey have so much more clarity... Did it take me 8 weeks to have this much clarity? M a y b e. Do I regret it? No, because at least I was not stagnant during the first half of the semester. At least my singular brain cell was doing ✨something✨. What matters now is moving forward and using the time I have to create something excellent and that I am proud of!

At the beginning of my Capstone, I had a bit of hesitancecy to create a mobile app-- doubts like "I don't even know if people will use it! Will the right demographic be inspired to even use it?" However, I have been doing extensive research into how I can offer a new and innovative way to bring awareness to the right audience about online safety, specifically regarding online groomers and predators. According to my research, I believe that an app is still relevant.

In my research, I found a resource that was talking about how during the COVID pandemic, children were open to having an option where they can get an incentive for opting in to class and participating while learning remotely— a “School-sponsored opt-in app rewards system”. I also found a source that talked about how to value teen employees. Though I am not reaching out to employees, I believe that it still applies and holds the same essence. The article said that incentives for excellent performance and recognizing positive behaviors is a great way to get teens engaged and working diligently.

During my research, I also found that the right demographic to be bringing my deliverable to is teens that start at the age of 13 years old to older. I say older, because my research also found that the relationship between a teen and their parent is paramount in communicating boundaries, trust, & transparency regarding this issue. Therefore, the parent should be included in the conversation.

With these in mind, I adjusted accordingly. For my mobile app, aesthetic changes were made to suit both parents and teens. I no longer am using yellow, because my research found that yellow and black are associated with "warning" and "caution" (ex. warning road signs, caution tape at a crime scene, etc). The aesthetic is a bit more classy and calming (unlike the shocking information being conveyed).

I have also gotten started on the wireframes. There are still some screens that need to be made, but this is where I am at currently :)

The next step would be to get feedback on the app and survey my demographic. I would also like to write in a separate Tumblr post about my inspiration behind creating this app-- what brands, people, & organizations inspired LUMI-- just so that I can document my creative process, and for y'all to see as well. :)

WEEK 4-5: 2/12/23, 10:47pm

Where are you now? I am really happy because I (somewhat completely) figured out how I want my brand to look like. I have created a style guide for my deliverable's online presence:

Where are you headed? - I am sure there are some things in the style guide that will be adjusted. But my next step is to figure out the content I want to put out, and I also want to figure out how I will measure the data for my project. Right now, my biggest obstacles are STILL figuring out the best deliverable (I MUST have it this week!!!), a lack of motivation, & burnout... Definitely not impossible to come back from!

I also need to start being more intentional with writing my paper............. ✍🏻

Also, an update.. - A week ago, I got an internship with a District Representative as on of their social media contributors! 🎉👏🏻 (I wouldn't call myself a "social media ✨manager✨", I just help create and put out posts for them on all their social media platforms... Is that the same thing?) It's been fun and I have learned a lot. It is such a dream come true because it mixes three of my favorite things-- creative content, social media, & politics!! 🇺🇸🦅📜

I low-key feel like I'm doing two capstones because of my workload and they both apply to Creative Media LOL but glory to God for keeping me busy and making this final semester a fruitful one! 🙏🏻 God really saw the desire of my heart and I'm grateful that He has given me the time, energy, & passion to execute all these pursuits. 💛

Where are you headed? - Describe how you plan to begin your first steps of your plan, any hurdles you might encounter (basically, how are you taking the first step)

Where are you now? 

For these past 2 weeks, I have been doing research on my topic. However, I definitely need to do more research and use the UHWO Library database. I shall focus on that this week so I have a firm foundation moving forward.

Where are you headed?

I am considering the best deliverable according to my research. I originally wanted to create an app because that is what I am most comfortable in, but I am now thinking that the solution and best fit deliverable is more important than my comfort.I would like to come to a final decision on what I want my deliverable to be so that i am not in a gray/turbulent area. I hope to have a clear vision this week.
