Day 31:10/5/19
This morning I made a smoothie with banana, avocado, peanut butter, protein powder, and cocoa powder. I ended up skipping lunch because I didn’t feel hungry. I try to consume food intuitively and based on how full I actually feel so as to not overeat. For dinner I had leftover beans, couscous, broccoli, olives, and hummus. That night my roomates and I baked candy corn cookies. I guess we have big sweet tooths lately, having made treats two nights in a row. One fun part of fall is staying in and baking. It’s a good way to get in the seasonal spirit, but maybe not the best way to stay healthy.
Today I met a friend in the Coffman Cube after work to catch up. We were right by the starbucks, and though I felt very tempted to buy a drink, I resisted for the sake of saving money. They had a new seasonal drink, pumpkin foam cold brew, that looked divine, but I decided that I would hold off for now and maybe try it another time. This allowed me to be more present with my friend anyways. That night my roommates and I watched a romantic comedy, 27 Dresses, after baking cookies. It was just about the most stereotypical ‘girls’ night.’ We ate, talked, laughed, and ignored all the homework on our plates for that weekend. Watching romantic comedies as an adult makes me realize how truly unrealistic they are in their portrayals of love and romance. I guess disillusionment and maturity can change your perceptions of what you consume over time.
That day, I listened to some youtube videos and podcasts while doing various chores such as laundry and the dishes. I like to have something to preoccupy my mind while doing ‘mindless tasks.’ Typically, this would mean listening to music, but I like podcasts or videos because they allow me to actually learn something, whereas music typically just becomes white noise or mere entertainment. I chose to listen to a podcast by Ellen Dykas, who works in women’s ministry, and a recent video by a favorite youtuber of mine, Mrs. Midwest.

Day 30: 10/4/19
This morning I ate the other half of the pumpkin muffin I bought yesterday as well as some apples and peanut butter. I also made some iced coffee to kick start my day. Because my Friday morning class lasts four hours long, I usually need a bit of caffeine to get through it. I skipped lunch because I intended to go straight to the gym after class, but I did buy a protein bar to tide me over (about $3). After my workout, I headed to target to buy some groceries costing me about $40. I bought avocados, bananas, peanut butter, spinach, hummus, sweet potato fries, broccoli, black beans, soup, and some frozen meals. For dinner I made couscous with black beans, olives, broccoli, and avocado. Tonight my roommates and I baked a cake together. It was a good treat as well as a nice time to spend time with one another and share some laughs. I will say however, I had way too much cake to eat.
During class, we critiqued each other’s photographs. I love consuming others’ artistic work, especially my peers’. Hearing both praise and constructive criticism aimed at other students always helps me evaluate my own work. Out of all the information I consume from design classes, critiques are I think the most effective for my growth as a designer. Rather than gain knowledge regarding the elements and principles of design, or how to do a particular skill, critiques offer specific tips while I am in the process of applying what I have learned. In the field of design especially, learning by doing is usually the most effective strategy for success, so getting feedback while I am in the process of ‘doing’ is more effective than being told what to ‘do.’
Today, a friend of mine from a mission trip I went on over the summer reached out to me asking for a donation to another trip she is going on. She will be going to East Africa to team up with an international school to teach English to local university students to provide access to better job opportunities. A second goal of the program is to minister students and share the Gospel with them. Because I care deeply about my friend and the cause, I supported her trip with $50.

Day 29: 10/3/19
For breakfast I had apples and peanut butter. I also stopped by Lori’s coffee for a midmorning snack: iced chai and muffin. I got the pumpkin flavor again; it’s seriously so good, I just can’t get enough. In total, my purchase cost me $5. For lunch, I ate a smoothie and egg sandwich that I packed in my backpack this morning. For dinner, I finished off my leftover pasta. At this point, I am basically out of food and am in desperate need of a grocery shopping trip. I’ve wanted to go, but haven’t had any time the past week to make it to Target. My location on campus is also inconvenient; while Target is in Dinkytown, my apartment is all the way in stadium village. Not only do I then have to allot a decent amount of time for getting food there, but I must also make sure the weather is appropriate (trekking all the way across campus in the pouring rain isn’t exactly enjoyable).
Today in between classes I ventured campus taking photos for a photography project. While I only need 4 total, I captured a plethora of different shots. I knew it would be best to test multiple ideas so that I had enough images to choose from, narrow down, and work with. I shot outside of the St Paul student center, in McNeal Hall, Lori’s cafe, Northrop, and Tate Hall. Photography has been a long time hobby of mine, so getting back into it after a while for this assignment sparked my sense of passion. To edit my photos, I used Adobe Lightroom. I furthermore used Adobe InDesign to complete a project for my typography class and paid about a dollar to print it in McNeal’s lab #69.

Day 28: 10/2/19
I ate the second half of my muffin from yesterday and a fried egg over a slice of toast for breakfast. I stopped by subway for lunch in between class and work, as well as bordertown for a needed shot of caffeine. Both my sandwich and my cappuccino each cost me about $4. I’ve been eating out more lately than I should, but I haven’t had much time to make my own food nor go grocery shopping. For dinner had leftovers from last night’s meal.
A few of my friends from a summer program I was involved with made and invited me to a Facebook page dedicated to memes. The goal was for members to make and post their own memes. I gave my contribution by utilizing a few templates I found online. In making my own memes, I also got sidetracked and ended up perusing others online. It definitely gave me some needed laughter. Memes are a rather peculiar, but extremely popular form of consumption in pop culture. They allow anyone with internet connection to consume and create humor that they can then share with others for free.
After work, I went to the Rec Center to exercise. Today I ran on the track and focused on training my arms during a lifting session afterward. One perk of going to the rec, other than the health benefits, is that I earn Plyo points by doing so. Plyo is a app that tracks your time at the gym and grants you points which you can spend on coupons for local restaurants. This provides a little extra motivation to workout, as I can save money on my future consumption with coupons. One caveat to coupons which I’ve noticed, however, is that they sometimes don’t really save you money in the long run. For instance, sometimes I buy things only because I have a coupon, even if I wouldn’t otherwise. This makes me think I’m saving money, but in actuality I’m spending more than I normally would, even though the price is discounted.

Day 27: 10/1/19
For breakfast I had oatmeal with banana, peanut butter, cocoa powder, and granola. I realized that I almost always make this for breakfast, if not a smoothie or apple. Somehow I don’t get bored of it; some habits just stick I guess. In between class I grabbed a coffee at Lori’s, costing me less than $3. I didn’t have cash on me, and to use a card they require a purchase over $3. I added a muffin to my order rounding it up to $4. I probably didn’t need the sugar, but was admittedly kind of happy that I had an excuse to get myself a treat. I chose the pumpkin flavor in light of fall being just around the corner. For dinner, I made chickpea pasta with red sauce, which I mixed with broccoli olives, and some spices.
Though I’ve been running often, I haven’t gotten in any strength training in several days, so I made it to the gym for a lifting session. After biking for about 25 minutes, I focused on working my legs. One might say it was ‘leg day’ for me. I learned the proper form for various exercises from body pump, a fitness class I attended in high school, and online tips from fitness gurus and trainers. The consumption of workout plans has skyrocketed in the past few years with a rising number of fitness instagram accounts and youtube channels. In tangent with this culture’s recent fitness trend has also come a trend in diet plans and athletic apparel. I think this may be a result of social media; people are visually consuming images of attractive bodies daily and want to achieve that for themselves. Personally, though I care about my body’s health, I try not to root working out in achieving an unrealistic standard. In fact, I make sure to not consume content that weakens my self esteem, such as instagram ‘gymrats’ who promote unhealthy eating habits and have likely undergone plastic surgery to achieve their physic.
Today I listened to a lot of NF on Spotify. Going to his concert made me even more excited about and appreciative of his music. He raps mainly about his mental health and his lyrics are very vulnerable and honest, something I believe is lacking in most mainstream music. Consuming his songs makes me more reflective of my life and myself rather than just entertaining me.

Day 26: 9/30/19
For breakfast I had oatmeal with banana, peanut butter, cocoa powder, and granola. For lunch I packed leftover sweet potato fries and chickpeas mixed with pesto. In McNeal Hall’s atrium they had free cookies set out, and I took a white chocolate macadamia one. I didn’t have much food in the house, so I headed to Simpls cafe in Stadium Village to grab dinner. I bought a creamy vegetarian soup that included vegetables, wild rice, lentils, and almonds, which cost me about $5. I also used a coupon to get a free kombucha with my purchase.
In the morning I had Web Design, where we further learned how to code. At this point, the exercises we are doing produce what looks more like an actual website layout. Formerly, we just focused on making simple elements like color or text appear on our browser, but now we are able to produce more complex pages. Just like always, we utilize the application Webstorm, a program I don’t have to pay for. I appreciate this perk, for most of my other classes require that I use programs that cost money, such as Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, and Lightroom. After class, I worked for 5 hours. I ended up giving a personal tour to a prospective student and her mother. Here might be an example where someone else is consuming something from me - in this case, information and facts about the University as well as my personal experiences as a student.
Tonight I helped lead our weekly bible study again. Here exemplifies an instance of shared consumption in that I not only read scripture myself, but discussed it with more people. Consuming any material alongside others, whether that be text, cinema, music, art, or any other media, always aids my understanding of it and offers me new perspectives. Hearing what stood out in scripture to the other girls in my group, what connections they made, and how it relates to their lives personally helped me see the concepts on a much deeper level even though I had already done the study myself, and was leading it. Sometimes the best way to consume information, or ultimately learn, is to teach.

Day 25: 9/29/19
This morning I ate a banana with peanut butter and granola for breakfast. I also brewed some coffee to get my day started. For lunch, I scrambled some eggs with chickpeas. I also made sweet potato fries in the oven and had some oreos with almond milk. For dinner, a friend bought me dinner at 17th Ave’s dining hall. I had tomato soup, salad, rice, stir fry, and ice cream. I hadn’t eaten in a dining hall since freshman year, and going reminded me just how easy the buffet style makes it is to overeat. I figured it couldn’t hurt though, since I wanted to make the most of the whopping $10 my friend paid for me to go. That night, I bought laundry detergent, shampoo, and conditioner at CVS, all costing me about $15.
In the morning I went to Hope Community Church’s 8:45 service. I typically go to Bethlehem Baptist on Sundays, but choose to go to Hope instead for the sake of seeing some of my friends. Once I got home, I went for a run down on East River Flats. Attending church and jogging definitely started my day off well. Both activities are always good for both my mental health and sense of peace, something I really needed to tend to after a busy week of schoolwork and a fun weekend. If time serves as a form of consumption, I always try to spend it wisely with a sense of balance in mind. I always must devote an even amount of time to academics, socializing, and restful activities so as to not overwork myself, overwhelm myself, or fall behind on responsibilities.
Most of the afternoon and then later that night I used Webstorm to complete some coding assignments for my Web Design class. Though a valuable skill to learn, coding has felt a little tedious for me. Getting the notation completely accurate is imperative to having all of the elements on a website show up and function correctly. Such a meticulous process can thus definitely prompt frustration when I don’t know what I am doing with full confidence (which is often the case).

Day 24: 9/28/19
I started my day with coffee and apple slices with peanut butter. I wasn’t super hungry and so skipped lunch. That night I went out to eat downtown with some friends visiting the city. We ended up having Five Guys in lieu of dining at an expensive restaurant to save money. Later that night we all hung out at a friend’s house where we snacked on some chips ahoy cookies.
This morning I got to sleep in for once. Usually I either have class, work, or church to get up for, but today I had no obligations. After sliding out of bed I read through some of my favorite passages in the bible: Psalms 139, Proverbs 31, and 1 Samuel 1. I have mentally been working through something tough lately, and knew that those scriptures were what I needed to hear. I also prayed extensively to find a sense of release and gain strength in what I was dealing with. Responding to my anxieties by turning to my God always brings me peace and comfort. Afterwards, I went to the rec lobby to study a bit, as I knew getting out of my apartment would help me focus better. I mainly worked on my essay.
This evening, some of my friends from UW Madison came to visit the cities for a concert at the Armory. I ended up joining them for both dinner and the concert as well. We saw rapper NF perform, whom we are all big fans of. Though my ticket cost about $80 including fees, I didn’t feel guilty paying for it, since seeing live music by an artist you love and with people you love is to me, worth the investment. Consumption is best when shared, this night reminded me. Seeing NF rap in person furthermore made me admire his level of talent so much more than merely listening to his songs through my headphones.

Day 23: 9/27/19
For breakfast this morning, I ate apple slices with peanut butter and gave myself a boost of energy with homemade iced coffee. I tried the k-cup version of Starbucks pumpkin spice with our keurig. Though it definitely tasted good, I personally think the pumpkin spice fad is overrated For instance, my brew didn’t taste a whole lot different from regular coffee, yet Starbucks is able to market it with more so much hype simply due to the flavor’s seasonal popularity. For lunch, I packed a bagel sandwich with a homemade spread I concocted: mashed avocado and chickpeas together for a perfect blend of healthy fat and protein. I then went to the Paint the Bridge event to decorate a panel for a student group I am involved in: First Care on Campus, a pregnancy center offering free STD testing, pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, family counseling, and more. The event offered free hot chocolate, cookies, and pizza, all of which I took full advantage. Afterwards I hit the gym, and so later that night made a protein smoothie. I usually try to make sure of some protein intake anytime after I exercise. I also purchased some lime chips and oreos to celebrate my friends visiting for the weekend.
In photography today we learned about lighting, white balance, file import and storage, and editing in Adobe Lightroom. For the first time I used the $50 external hard drive which I had to buy for this class last week. I always consider buying materials for schoolwork a little tedious, as it’s a mandatory expense on top of the huge tuition I already have to pay. This purchase was especially expensive. Though I bought the item begrudgingly, knowing that I will get use out of it in the years to come gave me a bit of relief.
At work, I put together visitor folders while listening to some tunes. I put on my oldies playlist, complete with music from all decades, mostly 70’s and 80’s. One nice thing about modern streaming services is that they grant access to not only recent music, but that from the past was well. Having Spotify has thus surely expanded my music taste and knowledge beyond just what is of my time. Jamming to Queen and Billy Joel with my coworkers today showed me that forms of consumption, like music especially, have a way of bringing people together. Songs by iconic and timeless artists like these can easily bridge people of all generations and backgrounds simply because of their popularity.

Day 22: 9/26/19
For breakfast I made oatmeal with banana, cocoa powder, and peanut butter. For lunch, I packed scrambled eggs with chickpeas and spinach mixed in. For dinner, I packed a bagel sandwich with avocado and spinach. Given that I had class from 8:30 to 6 in St Paul and then had to go straight to Nav Night from 7 until 9:30, I had to pack my own food for the entire day. Sure, I could’ve eaten out, but if I have the chance, I like to pack my meals ahead of time in the vain of saving money.
In Illustration class today, we all presented our final portraits to the class. Art, especially that of fellow students, is one of my favorite things to visually consume. Because of the subjective nature of illustration, that there is never one right solution to a problem, one prompt can spur a variety of interpretations, techniques, use of mediums, and styles. It was so fascinating to observe and hear the process behind such a wide range of responses to this project. Observing what others create always inspires me in my own drawing skills and style.
In Typography, we similarly presented our final calendar designs, as well as the preliminary stages of our next project where we explore contrast in type. This class period also included a critique where we reviewed each other’s designs and pointed out both their success and areas for potential improvement. Constructive criticism is one of the most valuable things I can consume as a design student, as a separate pair of eyes on my work will notice things that I would not, thus allowing me to tweak and push my designs even further. One thing that I appreciate about the school of design’s culture is the overwhelming desire to encourage and help one another. Rather than compete for spots in the program, I feel that graphic design students are always excited to see each other’s work, inspired by it, and eager to give their expertise in a way that furthers the peers abilities.
That night at Nav Night, our speaker addressed and expounded upon a passage from Matthew. He also shared some testimonial stories from pivotal moments in his life and how they related his faith and more importantly, the scripture we went over. Consuming others’ experiences and struggles always has a way of inspiring me and prompting me to look inward at how I can grow through my trials.
