Field Guide to Research #4

For this post, I decided to do the Johnny Depp VS Amber Heard trial. This is a very well-known case that took place a few months ago and had a lot of media coverage surrounding it for the time it took place. While it was happening it was something that I personally was following as well, and to watch the nitty gritty between the case I was very interested.

When I started looking into this case there were so many things that proved Amber Heard to be lying in the court of law but resulted in her evidence being dismissed. I used the website buzzsumo to do most of my search in this deep dive and it brought me to multiple articles that summarized the verdict that was chosen in the defamation trial which ruled in the favor of Johnny leaving Amber to be guilty. The Jury awarded Depp with a total of 15 million. I continued my fact-checking of this case and throughout the trial, it was claimed by Heard that she was abused by her Ex-Husband Depp, but many of the said allegations were proved false by Depp's team. That some of her bruises were makeup, fights that were recorded were being played in Heards favor, and makeup that she testifies she used hadn't even been released yet, which disproves her claims of using it to "cover her bruises".

In conclusion to this, it was proved that Amber Heard was found guilty in the lawsuit of defamations placed against Depp. In the first article, I used there was a collective 251.1k engagements to the page and in the second there were 16.4k.

Reading Latterly #3

The person that I chose to look into is Brianna Kaylynn. She is a young social media gym influencer who hosts multiple programs you can follow in the gym and at home to be active.

First, I started by googling just her first and last name and it brought up multiple accounts that she runs on her own to promote her programs. Brianna has a collective amount of around 1 million followers over media platforms. After doing a bit of a deep dive I learned that Brianna is certified in fitness and has been involved in fitness since she was 17 years old. She filed for an LLC for her company of "Brianna Kaylynn Fitness" in March of 2021 to move to the next step in her journey of being a personal trainer. After finishing my search I made the conclusion that Brianna definitely has the proper knowledge to be teaching what she does to her platform.

Social media is something that can be really deceiving when it comes to social media influencers, which is something that can create many problems at times. There are many people that can easily claim to have degrees in special things and promote them to their followers which can result in people following programs that aren't real. This is something that many gym influencers tend to do not even on purpose, which sometimes can be dangerous.

Fact-Checking #1

The article that I chose to fact-check was this one about Leonardo De-Caprio stating that he donated 10 million dollars to Ukraine because of his "family ties" to help in a time of need.

After doing a very quick google search of "Leonardo Dicaprio doting money to Ukraine" it brought me to multiple sites which stated that his family ties to Ukraine were not true. This was a very quick fact check because so many articles were being put out over this statement of donation and with those it lead to the truth. These are a result of multiple poorly sourced stories and writers not taking the time to find the full truth.

I continued to go through other websites that were reliable which told me that Leonardo did make some donations and does stand with Ukraine but it was not 10 million and it was not because he had family there as well.

Viral Photo #2

About 5 years ago there were multiple photos circulating the web of this pilot that posted photos that appeared to be taken out of the cockpit of his plane. The internet went into a full-on frenzy over these pictures that were continuing to be reshared. Many of these photos began to be reshared and the backlash that was talked about from them was immense due to how "unsafe" something like this could be.

This is a viral photo that definitely could easily belived ot be real when first glancing at it although, it turned out that these photos were fake. After doing a quick search on google it brought me to multiple articles that stated even the pilot who posted these photos even stated in his captions that "photoshop mode ON". I also discovered a bit more about how false statements were beginning to be made from the resharing and loss of his captions. It is definitely easy for a photo to go viral and not put much thought into the fact it could possibly be misleading.

This is something that very frequently takes place when some of these photos go viral is the loss of context from the original sharer. Also when I was going through the process of deep-diving on these photos it lead me to a website where they broke down the entire process they went through to disprove the multiple photos that were photoshopped, which I will link below.
