Summary: Seungcheol wants to date again, but his daughter keeps on calling you "mommy".
You've been putting off a trip to the flower shop for days now. It's not that you don't want to be there; in fact, you miss the comforting scent of fresh blooms and the routine of arranging them into beautiful bouquets. But life has a way of distracting you, especially after Seungcheol's accident and the emotional rollercoaster that followed.
Today, you finally decide it's time to get back to the shop. You need a change of scenery, a distraction from your own thoughts. So, you make your way there, the familiar route from your apartment to the cozy little shop that has been your haven for years.
When you arrive, the bell above the door tinkles cheerfully, announcing your presence to the world of flora and fauna. The shop is filled with the vibrant colors of various flowers, all basking in the soft glow of sunlight streaming through the windows. The sight instantly lifts your spirits.
Soonyoung and Seungkwan are behind the counter, engaged in a heated debate about something trivial. They pause their argument when they see you, their faces lighting up with genuine smiles.
"Omo! Finally, you're back!" Seungkwan exclaims, rushing over to give you a warm hug.
Soonyoung joins in, enveloping you in a bear hug. "We've missed you, noona."
You return their affectionate gestures with a smile. "I've missed you guys too."
They lead you to the counter, where a cup of coffee awaits you. It's a thoughtful gesture, knowing your penchant for caffeine.
"So, how are things with you and Seungcheol hyung?" Seungkwan asks, his eyes dancing with curiosity.
You take a sip of your coffee, buying a moment to gather your thoughts. "It's…complicated, but we're working things out."
Soonyoung nods knowingly. "Give it time, noona. These things can't be rushed."
You appreciate their understanding. "Yeah, I know. It's just that I want to be sure about everything before diving into a relationship."
Seungkwan leans in, his voice hushed. "Listen, relationships are like arranging flowers. You start with a bouquet, but you take your time to arrange each stem perfectly to create something beautiful. Just don't forget to enjoy the process."
His metaphor brings a smile to your face. Leave it to Seungkwan to provide insightful wisdom wrapped in a quirky analogy.
"Thanks, Seungkwan. That actually makes a lot of sense."
They continue to chat about various things, sharing funny anecdotes and updates on their lives. It's exactly what you needed–the familiar warmth of friendship and the reminder that life goes on, even in the midst of uncertainty.
As the day at the flower shop unfolds, you find yourself gradually letting go of the worries that have been weighing you down. The rhythm of arranging flowers, the laughter of your friends, and the simple beauty of the shop help you reconnect with yourself.
By the time you close up the shop for the day, you feel more at peace with your own emotions. You've given yourself the time you needed to process your feelings for Seungcheol. Maybe it's time to take that next step, to let yourself fully embrace the possibility of love.
As you tidy up the last few bouquets and prepare to close the shop, a father and his young son walk in. The boy clings to his father's hand, his eyes wide with wonder at the colorful display of flowers.
"Mommy's birthday is coming up, Daddy," the boy chirps.
You can't help but overhear their conversation and it tugs at your heartstrings. The father smiles down at his son. "That's right, buddy. What do you think Mommy would like?"
The boy looks around the shop, his eyes settling on a bouquet of delicate roses. "These are pretty, Daddy!"
The father nods, and you can see the love in his eyes as he looks at his son. "Great choice, son. Let's get those roses for Mommy."
You approach them with a warm smile. "Hello, how can I help you today?"
The father looks at you, gratitude in his eyes. "We'd like a bouquet of those roses, please."
As you carefully prepare the bouquet, you can't help but be reminded of Seungcheol and Jangmi. Have they eaten? Has Seungcheol taken his pain medicine yet? The thoughts sneak into your mind, and you find yourself mentally checking on them, even though you're here at the shop to clear your head.
After finishing the bouquet and helping the father and son with their purchase, you bid them a heartfelt goodbye. "I hope your wife loves the roses. Have a wonderful day!"
As they leave, you realize that you've been thinking about Seungcheol and Jangmi a lot today. It's hard to resist the urge to check on them constantly, to make sure they're okay. But you need to give yourself the space and time to make a decision about your relationship with Seungcheol.
Just as you're lost in your thoughts, the bell above the door chimes again. You look up, surprised to see Joshua entering the shop. He likely hasn't expected you to be in the shop because he calls for Soonyoung at the door. Not noticing you at the counter, he walks right in and proceeds to look at the flowers.
You watch him quietly. A mixture of curiosity and a pang of an unknown feeling clutches your heart. It's clear that Joshua has something on his mind, and you wonder if it has anything to do with his recent absence.
"Yo Hoshi," Joshua, lost in the sea of vibrant petals, calls out for your brother again, "could you help me pick some flowers?"
Soonyoung's voice floats from the back of the shop, mingling with Seungkwan's laughter. They're clearly occupied, leaving you as the only available assistance. You take a deep breath and approach Joshua with a tentative smile.
"Hi there, Shua," you greet him softly, unsure of his reaction.
Joshua's head jerks up in surprise, his eyes widening when they meet yours. It's clear that he didn't expect to see you here. His discomfort is palpable, and you can't help but wonder why he's been avoiding you lately. You push those thoughts aside for now and focus on the task at hand.
"Hi," he stammers, his gaze darting around the shop. "I, uh, need some flowers."
Your enthusiasm for arranging flowers kicks in, and you can't help but smile brightly. "Of course! I'd love to help. Are these flowers for your mom again?"
Joshua's awkward cough catches your attention, and he shifts uncomfortably on his feet. "Actually, no. It's for a date."
Your smile widens, genuinely happy for him. "Oh, that's wonderful! Congratulations. Let me help you find the perfect bouquet for your date."
As you guide Joshua through the shop, you can't shake off the feeling that something is amiss. But why would Joshua have any reason to avoid you? The thought lingers in the back of your mind, but you choose to push it aside for now, not wanting to spoil his day. Besides, you could be reading the atmosphere wrong. After all, he's buying flowers for his date, so he should be excited, right? It's probably just nerves.
"So, is this your first date?" you ask casually as you tighten your apron around your waist.
He shifts awkwardly on his feet before answering, "No, it's actually the second one. I, uh, didn't get her flowers on our first date, so I thought I'd make up for it now."
You can't help but feel excited for your friend, your smile growing wider. "Awww…that's wonderful! Flowers are always a lovely gesture."
But instead of sharing your enthusiasm, Joshua's discomfort seems to intensify. "Yeah," he mumbles, avoiding your gaze. "I hope she likes them."
Curious about his choice of flowers, you inquire, "What kind of flowers are you thinking of?"
Joshua hesitates for a moment before replying, "Irises. She's named after them."
"That's such a coincidence," you remark, thinking of Jangmi's mom. "Jangmi's mom is also named Iris."
Joshua's shoulders slump slightly, and he seems to deflate a bit. "Oh, yeah? Must be a common name," he mumbles.
Together, you pick out a lovely assortment of flowers with purple irises as the center piece. Once you've crafted a beautiful bouquet, Joshua thanks you with a smile, but it doesn't seem to reach his eyes. "Thanks, YN. You're really good at this."
You can't help but feel a pang of sadness, sensing that something is bothering him beyond the simple act of buying flowers. "You're welcome! If you ever need more flowers or anything else, you know where to find me."
He nods, his gaze distant. "Yeah, I do."
As you're preparing the receipt, Joshua places his hand near yours on the counter. "Listen, YN..."
"Hmmm?" you don't look up, but your attention is fully on him. When he doesn't continue, you turn to him and look into his eyes. "What is it, Shua?"
For a moment, Joshua looks so conflicted, but the second you blink, the look is gone and he has retracted his hand.
"Sorry, YN," he clears his throat, "I have to go. I'm running late. Just put the bill on my tab, okay?"
You watch him dash out of the shop with the bouquet in hand, a puzzled expression on your face. Something is definitely off, but you can't quite put your finger on it. Perhaps he's just really anxious about the date. Though, his expression didn't quite match the excitement you expected from someone going on a date.
As you finish the sale, Soonyoung and Seungkwan emerge from the back of the shop, curiosity written all over their faces.
"Was that Shua hyung?" Soonyoung asks, to which you hum in response. "Why was he in such a hurry?"
You're weirded out by the whole situation and decide to be honest. "He said he's late for his date, who, by the way, has the same name as Jangmi's mom, Iris."
Soonyoung and Seungkwan exchange glances, and then Seungkwan asks incredulously, "Did you tell him that?"
You nod, not seeing any issue with it. "Yeah, I thought it was just a funny coincidence."
Seungkwan lets out a sigh and mutters, "Oh, YN."

Summary: Seungcheol wants to date again, but his daughter keeps on calling you "mommy".
Tendrils of white light up the sky as lightning makes its first appearance but it is not until a couple of seconds before thunder follows suit. Jangmi jolts in her sleep at the loud boom and reaches for you on your side of the bed on instinct like she knows you’ll be there no matter what. Scrambling, you place your hand next to her, afraid that she’ll wake up. Thank goodness, she doesn’t. Instead, she simply wraps her small hand around your pointer finger as you let out a small sigh of relief.
“You should be resting.”
The startled noise you make is not pretty and your unoccupied hand flies to your mouth to keep the rest of it from escaping. Shoulders rolling to release the tension, you turn to look at the owner of the voice and see him casually leaning against the door frame of Jangmi’s room.
“Don’t creep up on me like that, Jeonghan,” you whisper, careful not to wake the little girl next to you but also wanting Seungcheol’s best friend to know you’re serious.
He dislodges himself from the frame. “Sorry,” he shrugs, totally unapologetic.
You resist the urge to roll your eyes. This is a far cry from the somber attitude he has a few days ago at the hospital when you have been asking about Seungcheol’s whereabouts. He’s livelier, brighter somehow. Maybe because both of them are out of the woods already. Not that they’ve ever been, but they’re both feeling better now.
Jeonghan lowers himself on a beanbag on the other side of Jangmi’s bed. When it’s clear that you’re not offering him any conversation—you’re far too tired—he takes Jangmi’s coloring book from the nightstand and flips the pages like it’s a magazine. He carefully studies each page as if there’s more to a four-year-old’s coloring book than it lets on. You turn your attention away and check your phone.
In your friend group chat, Soonyoung and Seungkwan are bickering again. Since it’s not anything related to the shop, you let them squabble to their hearts’ content and just observe on the sidelines. Chan and Mingyu are stupidly goading both sides on with Jihoon interjecting every once in a while. You notice that Joshua still hasn’t opened the chat since the accident. Jihoon says he’s just been busy but it’s not like him to be away for so long even when he’s got a lot going on.
You open your text thread with him. The last conversation is you thanking him for driving you to the hospital. He just replied with a simple ‘anything for you’ and a smiley face. Nothing else followed. The next days after that have been a blur and you hardly have had the time to yourself much less anyone else other than Seungcheol and Jangmi. So, you haven’t really checked up on your friends until yesterday.
Mingyu wanted to go out and eat barbecue. Everyone else was available except you and Joshua. You, because you have your hands full with Jangmi and Seungcheol. Joshua, because he’s been MIA.
You’re about to type a message to Joshua when Jeonghan clears his throat. Jangmi’s coloring book is already abandoned back on the nightstand and you notice him threading and unthreading his fingers together. There’s a shift in his mood that you have missed while you were checking your phone. Whatever it is, Jeonghan’s discomfort is palpable in the room.
“Look, I wanted to apologize for what happened at the office.”
This takes you by surprise and you open your mouth to say he doesn’t need to apologize for anything. It was you who refused to hear Seungcheol out. But Jeonghan holds a hand up to stop you.
“Please, let me do this. I almost destroyed everything between you two so please just let me explain what happened.”
When you don’t say anything, Jeonghan clears his throat again. “I’m sorry you both got tangled in the mess between me and Eunji. She’s just a girl I hooked up with who caught feelings." He winces a little when he sees the face you make but continues anyway. "When you went to the office that day, she was there looking for me. Cheol just happened to be there. She knows him from the first time we met and maybe from stalking me—who knows? Anyways, he was there. She wanted to know where I was, and when Cheol refused to tell her, she came unhinged. She pulled her own hair, and basically trashed the place. At some point, Cheol tried to stop her but she ended up just assaulting him. So, whatever you think it looked like when you got there, I can assure you, it’s not it.”
You straighten up from where you’re sitting. To be honest, what with all you’ve done in the past days, you’ve almost forgotten about that woman. Hearing about it again now, it seems like it’s happened a lifetime ago.
After that long revelation, you realize you don’t have the heart to tell him that Seungcheol has already told you. So, you just settle in asking him something that you have a mild interest in. “Why are you telling me this?”
He sinks lower into the beanbag, like he wants it to swallow him up somehow. There’s shame in his eyes when he meets yours. “Well, I can see you mean a lot to him. And I don’t know how it is between you guys right now but I want to clear things up. It’s just that he likes you so much and after…after Iris I feel like he deserves to be happy again, you know?”
You inch closer, genuinely more curious now. “After Iris?”
“Yeah,” Jeonghan says, “you know, Jangmi’s—”
“Aren’t you supposed to be home already?”
You look up to see Seungcheol standing in the hallway, wearing a pair of pajamas and the comfiest-looking oversized shirt. He looks absolutely adorable if not for the deep frown marring his handsome face. Jangmi’s grip on your finger loosens and you stand to meet him by the door.
“Hey, how are you feeling?” You place a hand on his uninjured arm. As you do, your fingers graze over his flexed muscles and you realize that his hand is curled into a fist, the sharp glare he throws Jeonghan alerts you.
“Jeonghan and I were just talking,” you offer, feeling the need to somehow diffuse the tension.
Seungcheol softens a little under your touch but his eyes are still pinned on his friend. “Yeah, too much apparently.”
“Dude,” Jeonghan groans, rolling off the beanbag, “I’m just trying to help.”
“Thanks but we’re good here,” is Seungcheol’s clipped reply.
Jeonghan waves his hands in surrender and shoves them in his pocket as he walks toward the door. “Okay, okay. I’m sorry. I just thought YN would wanna know about—”
“We’re good, bro. Thanks.”
You raise an eyebrow at Seungcheol but he isn’t looking at you. His eyes are focused on Jeonghan, who shrugs at you apologetically this time before slipping out Jangmi’s bedroom door.
Sighing, he waves at both of you. “I’ll let myself out.”
Once he’s out of sight, Seungcheol enters Jangmi’s room without a word, his figure now noticeably more relaxed than it was before. You can’t help but mull over what has happened. Jeonghan coming over to explain and apologize is one thing. Seungcheol reacting the way that he has is another.
Why is he so mad at his best friend? You don’t think he’s said anything wrong, but there is something that has piqued your interest. Not sure how to breach the subject, you remain by the door. When Seungcheol turns around to look at you, something about his eyes gives you the courage to finally speak up.
“Is Iris…” you start.
The question is barely out of your mouth when you see Seungcheol nod his head in the slightest way possible.
“Jangmi’s absentee mom.” He finishes for you, disdain staining his baritone voice.
“Oh.”
“Yeah,” he confirms again, as if it needed any more confirmation to make the point.
It doesn’t bother you more than you have thought it would. As it seems, Seungcheol’s willingness to talk to you about his past trumps any ill feeling you might have felt while talking about a woman he used to love.
“So that’s why…” you muse, a chuckle escaping your lips faster than you can stop it.
Seungcheol turns to you with a confused frown. “That’s why what?”
You walk up to him, a small smile playing on your lips. “That’s why Jangmi is named Jangmi because her mother is named Iris and the name Jangmi means rose.”
He doesn’t respond, but he studies you closely. In fact, he studies you so close, you feel like you’ve grown another head that you have no idea of. You giggle nervously, taking a step back.
Noticing what you’ve done, Seungcheol leans away. “You’re not mad.”
It doesn’t sound like a question, but you shake your head anyway. “Mad about what?”
“Me, talking about my ex?” he offers, head tilted curiously.
Heat creeps up your cheeks and you turn away. “Why would I be mad? It’s not like…like you’re still seeing her, right?”
Seungcheol scoffs. “Good god, no way.”
“I mean, it’s going to be awkward staying here if you’re still seeing her, and I know I’m not your girlfriend or anything but—“
“You are.”
“—I feel like—Huh?”
“Girlfriend,” he points at you. “My girlfriend.”
You look at him stupidly. “Huh?”
This time, Seungcheol finally laughs. “You mean to tell me all this time, I’ve just been assuming that you’re my girlfriend?”
You gape at him.
You? His girlfriend? Well, surely you’ve both established a really close friendship by now but when exactly did you two become a couple?
Stammering, you look at Seungcheol, who has apparently decided that now is the right time to laugh his ass off. “What…What are you…Stop laughing at me!“
But Seungcheol can’t help himself. At least that’s what it looks like. Your face flames up and you’re almost certain that you’re now as red as a tomato.
“Choi Seungcheol, stop it!” you whisper-yell, afraid that if you make any more noises, Jangmi will wake up.
Her father sobers up at your pointed look. “You know, I could kiss you right now.”
“Stop it, Cheol,” you warn him.
“Why?” he asks, eyebrow raised in that cocky way only Seungcheol can do. “I confessed to you already and I’m pretty sure you said you liked me back during that long speech of yours at the hospital.”
Seungcheol steps closer to you and you step back, sweat trickling down your spine. His eyes are locked on yours and you’re almost positive he can read your mind like a big, flashing neon sign.
The discomfort you feel almost chokes you. What exactly were you expecting? Obviously, you care about him very much so what’s holding you back? His kid adores you just as much as you adore her and clearly, as evidenced by your conversation with Jeonghan just a while ago, the best friend is on your side as well. So, why are you still hesitant to commit yourself to this…whatever this is?
“You’re not yet ready,” Seungcheol’s voice shakes you out of your head and you hear the hurt in his voice before you even see it on his face.
A desperate feeling flows through you, turning into a dull pain in your chest as you stare back at him. You step forward, bridging the gap between the two of you that you have created earlier. The look on his face stills you, though.
“Cheol, I—“
His soft finger against your lips ends whatever you are going to say. He shakes his head gently when you try to protest. “You don’t need to explain yourself, YN. I’m sorry for putting you on the spot like that. Just pretend you didn’t hear what I said earlier.”
The uncertainty must have shown on your face because he takes your hand in his and squeezes it reassuringly. “We can take it one step at a time, Y/N,” Seungcheol whispers.
You find yourself nodding, relief washing over you like fresh air. “One step at a time,” you echo, “Okay.”

Summary: Seungcheol wants to date again, but his daughter keeps on calling you "mommy".
“You’re not seriously considering going over there, are you?”
Joshua looks at you carefully, as if you’ll shatter if he says the wrong thing. He could be right for all you know.
Your throat dries up, but you will yourself to respond. “I need to be there.”
“Do you think he’ll want you to be there?” In the back of your mind, you know Joshua doesn’t say it to be mean, but your thoughts are already clouded with guilt and worry and his words come across you like a slap in the face.
The pain must have shown on your face because he suddenly backpedals to take out the sting. “I just mean like, he might not want to bother you any more than he already has.”
But it’s too late. You are already reminded of what you have witnessed earlier today. The world feels like it's crashing and the realization guts you further, as if this day can’t get any more nightmarish than it already is.
You’ve been holding yourself together since you and Jangmi got back from Seungcheol’s office. Soonyoung and Seungkwan have not suspected anything to be amiss, what with the great acting skills that you have. But the second Hansol and Jangmi have left you all alone, you have immediately felt your mask slipping.
That’s when you call Joshua.
He has been in the middle of setting up for a gig with Jihoon tonight but when he puts you on speaker and you don’t greet them in the usual way that you do, they immediately know something is up. Jihoon decides to stay and finish the gig since they’re already tied to a contract, but Joshua tells you to hang tight and that he’ll be there before you know it.
True enough, he gets there in record time. The moment you see him, the dam holding your tears immediately breaks away and he takes you into his arms without question. He tells you to just let it all out in that signature Joshua way that he always does.
It takes you several minutes to compose yourself and tell your friend everything from the confession up to what you have witnessed earlier today. You expect him to tell you ‘I told you so’ but of course, he doesn’t because this is Joshua, the gentleman, who will never push other people lower when they are already down.
Just as you finished your story, Hansol calls you, panic-stricken and absolutely terrified. His brother has gotten into an accident, he tells you, and he doesn’t know who else to call. Their youngest sibling, Sofia, is at the hospital with him, but he can’t bring himself to call their parents because he has left Jangmi with them. Their other friends are on the way, but there is no other “adult” with them there right now.
What a crazy, cruel twist of fate.
“I just…” you look around for your purse, already on the move, “I just need to see him for myself, Shua.”
Joshua drives you home so you can change out of your work clothes. Soonyoung doesn’t say anything when you arrive but the worried look he shares with Joshua tells you your brother has been caught up to speed. You don’t dare open your mouth. It doesn’t feel right to speak.
By the time Joshua pulls into the parking lot, your whole body already feels numb. The cement is glistening under the street lights and you vaguely remember the rain this morning. Is that why you’re here at the hospital? Because some stupid rain has decided to fall and wreak damage in your lives?
You shake your head. You sound crazy.
The hospital is busy as always and you do your best not to crash into any of the nurses walking hurriedly to wherever they have to be at the time. It doesn’t take you long to locate the emergency ward. Nobody pays you any attention as you step inside and scan the room for anyone familiar. Your heart lurches forward when you catch a glimpse of someone in a black suit sitting on a bed while he’s being tended to by a doctor. His back is turned to you but you immediately recognize his hair.
“Do you see—“
You no longer get to hear the rest of what Joshua says because you’re already walking across the room, intent on making your way there as soon as possible. The doctor, who you now see is an elderly man, looks up at you as you approach before turning back to his patient.
“We just need to keep you for a few hours while we do a concussion test. If nothing else seems amiss and you feel fine, you can go home then.” The doctor nods briefly and immediately moves to go check on other patients.
“YN…”
You step back in shock. With his back to you, how is he able to tell that it’s you?
As if to answer your question, Jeonghan waves his hand in front of your face. When he drops his hand, you see your reflection in the glass window staring back at you. Probably seeing your dumbfounded expression, Jeonghan laughs softly, his free arm clutching his midsection.
You step around the bed and face him. That’s when you realize that his white shirt has blood all over it, most of it covering his right side. There’s a gash above his left eyebrow which is being held closed by a small bandage. You take in his injuries and a sinking feeling starts to crawl over you. You realize that the small cut on his forehead can hardly produce that much blood. More so, all the blood is on the wrong side.
With your heart pounding, you point at his right, “Jeonghan, is that…”
It almost destroys you, the way the humor instantaneously disappears from his eyes. Jeonghan breaks eye contact with you, the floor apparently being more interesting to look at.
“I guess you’re here because you already know what happened, right?” He looks back at you but your eyes are fixated on the blood drenching his shirt. He tries to cover it with his suit jacket but it hardly does anything to calm your nerves. You’ve already seen enough to realize something is very, very wrong here.
“Seungcheol and I were just on our way to your shop. I pushed him to clear up the misunderstanding with you. He told me all about it. He wanted to give you space but I convinced him he didn’t have to do that. We were on the highway. I swear we were going way below the speed limit. Everything happened so fast. I don’t even know what hit us. I banged my head on something and was losing consciousness. I barely remember hearing Cheol call my name like he's trying to keep me awake, but I fainted anyways. When I came to, I was already here.”
Against your better judgment, your eyes cut back to Jeonghan's bloody shirt and a terrifying thought settles itself in your mind. You whip around, feeling the room spinning, unsure what—or who—you’re searching for. Jeonghan is saying something else and you recognize worry in his tone but the words don’t make sense. You lift a trembling hand to your lips. This can’t be happening.
A hand gently holds you by the elbow but nothing registers in your mind, only that you’re being seated on something soft, probably one of the beds surrounding you.
Your vision tunnels and your hand clings tighter over your mouth, all the food you’ve eaten the entire day threatening to go back up. As if the torture isn’t enough, your mind suddenly wanders to how much blood exactly can a person lose before he...before he…
You shake your head violently. Or somebody is shaking you violently. You don’t know really know anymore. All you know is that you need to look for Seungcheol. No matter where he is right now, you have to see him, because otherwise, your mind will not stop from conjuring up every single horrific scenario.
A dizzying spell overcomes you as you stand up and a pair of hands offer up support when you lose balance.
“I’m okay,” you say, hand outstretched but actually unfocused on whoever it is. “Where did they take Seungcheol?”
“YN, you need to sit down. You’re really pale right now.” Your eyes zero in on Joshua who is now standing behind Jeonghan’s bed.
“No,” you disagree, “what I need is to see him. I need to know he’s okay.”
They’re both looking at you funny and you almost tear up from the frustration that’s starting to bubble up from you. Why is nobody making a move to tell you where he is? Or that he’s fine at least?
He is fine, right?
You take a shaky breath. He has to be fine. Otherwise, you will not be able to live with yourself if the last interaction you’ve had with him is that awful thing in his office, refusing to listen to him, being cold as Antarctica.
Shaking your head again, actual tears forming in the corners of your eyes, you turn to Jeonghan. “Please, I just need to know he’s okay.”
He looks at you uncertainly. “YN, I don’t—“
“Someone must know! Please, we haven’t even had a proper conversation about us yet…”
“About what?”
“Us!” You cry, irritated that that’s what he’s focusing on.
Jeonghan shoots you another weird look. “What about 'you' exactly?”
It almost makes you scream. Why do they not see the urgency here? Jeonghan is freaking covered in blood, for goodness’ sake!
“Oh my god! About how I like him back. How when he told me he likes me three weeks ago and we haven’t spoken about it since didn’t mean I turned him down. And how when I saw him in his office this morning and he had another woman with him inside, it tore me up so bad I wanted to throw up. How it really crushed me but now I refuse to let that be the last time we ever talked to each other because I was really cold towards him and I would really, really hate that to be the last thing he remembers about me.”
The frustration has clearly gotten the best of you because by the time you’re done, you’re panting hard and maybe crying a little—okay, a lot. But both Jeonghan and Joshua still have this strange look on their faces that is starting to exasperate you. You’re really about to go on a long rant when the person behind you, who’s been keeping you steady all along and whom you’ve almost forgotten, puts his arms around you in a back hug.
You almost freak out and knee him where it hurts the most until you hear a familiar voice. “I’d hate that to be the last thing I remember about you, too, YN.”

Summary: Seungcheol wants to date again, but his daughter keeps on calling you "mommy".
“I think I like you, YN.”
Seungcheol’s voice is so low you barely hear him. If not for the lack of any other sound in the room, you probably would have second-guessed what he’s said. But the way he’s turned away and the redness creeping up his face only confirms what you’ve heard.
Slowly, he chances a glance at you, likely to gauge your reaction. You have no idea what your expression is, but it must not have been what he’s expecting because his expression quickly shifts to worry.
The urge to reassure him washes over you but you hold yourself back. How exactly will you reassure him?
You have no idea what to say.
Do you tell him you like him back? Do you? You’re not sure, but you do appreciate his company, and the way you see Seungcheol is not the same as how you see your other guy friends. Does that mean you like him like him? Do you ask for time to process your feelings? Probably. It certainly won’t be fair to him if you immediately tell him you feel the same way when you’re still coming to terms with it yourself.
He’s looking right into your eyes now, probably seeing the conflict in your mind. You try to look away subtly, but you’re almost sure he notices it, anyway. Whom are you kidding? He is probably the most observant man you know.
A million thoughts are running through your mind but none of them is the answer to your dilemma. What exactly is it you’re feeling for Choi Seungcheol?
Unfortunately—or fortunately, depending on whom you ask—the opportunity to answer is taken from you when Seungcheol’s phone, which he’s forgotten to put on silent, blares his ringtone out into the room. It shatters any sort of atmosphere that has developed between you two, effectively ruining the moment.
Biting your lip, you step aside to give him the privacy to answer the call. Seungcheol doesn’t look too happy with the interruption and when he sees the caller ID, his frown deepens. You find yourself feeling sorry for whoever is on the other line but there’s a small part of you that thanks them. You’re tempted to watch him while he’s on the phone, your curious nature almost getting the best of you, but you don’t. This is the time you should be thinking about what to tell him, not admiring his beauty.
You have to admit, the worries that you have over this confession mostly revolve around the fact that you’ve known this man for barely two months. For sure, some people will undeniably say that it’s not about how long you’ve known a person, but how well you know them. And you agree, but then, do you really know Seungcheol well enough?
The thought basically consumes you as you mentally tick off all the things that you know about him, most of them Jangmi-related. It’s not bad, you decide, but it might not be enough to help you conclude what your feelings are either. So, you sit on a bench across a jade green vase, chin propped on your hand as you think about his confession some more. That’s how Seungcheol finds you after his phone call.
“Hey,” he says softly.
There’s an underlying regret in his tone and you instantly know that the call has been a work call. He’s probably being called back into the office, even though he has firmly assured you earlier that he’s finished all his pending tasks for today.
And like clockwork, Seungcheol says, “They need me at work. Jeonghan said it’s urgent.”
“It’s alright. Go on, Mr. Prosecutor,” you singsong playfully, so he knows you understand.
Seungcheol bites his lip like he wants to say more but you’re already on your way to the arch which you’ve entered earlier. His steps are heavy behind you. It’s clear he doesn’t want to go. You’re not sure you want him to go either, but you convince yourself this must be a sign from the universe, telling you to slow down and think about your feelings real hard.
𖧷𖧷𖧷𖧷𖧷𖧷𖧷𖧷𖧷𖧷𖧷𖧷𖧷
It’s been three weeks since Seungcheol’s confession and in those three weeks, you both have been incredibly preoccupied with work and Jangmi that you haven’t had the chance to talk about it or even think about it—at least on your part.
“I just don’t get it. It’s almost summer. Why is there a thunderstorm?”
“Uhhh…summer storm?”
You look up to see Soonyoung and Seungkwan making faces at each other like children. They’ve been at it since this morning and to be frank if Jangmi isn’t here, you would have yelled at both of them to stop bickering. Playfully, of course.
Jangmi toddles over like she’s sensed that you’ve thought about her and settles next to you on the floor, watching you de-thorn some of the roses that have just come in today. It’s the last of the orders you’ve hastily placed right after the mold contamination three weeks ago. Thankfully, Soonyoung has had the mind to pull you away from both the computer and the phone before you’re able to order flowers for the rest of the year.
Your mind drifts over to Seungcheol’s confession again. He hasn’t brought it up since that day, and you’re grateful for it, but now that a significant amount of time has passed, you wonder if he’s getting impatient waiting on you. A certain coldness drops in the pit of your stomach at that thought. You do not like that feeling. Not one bit.
“Mommy!”
You snap your head to Jangmi when she shakes a hand in front of you. Her lower lip juts out in a pout and you can’t help but smile at her adorable face.
“You’re not listening to me,” she observes.
“I’m sorry, baby,” you quickly apologize, “Mommy’s got a lot on her mind right now. What were you saying?”
Jangmi huffs in mock annoyance, “I said, I want to go see daddy.”
Her action doesn’t register to you as fast as you’d like because when has she learned to make that expression? It’s probably Seungkwan who has taught her that since they’ve been spending an awful lot of time together lately. You make a mental note to ask him about it later.
“I want to see daddy,” Jangmi repeats.
You look at her seriously, trying to see if she actually means it or is just being petulant. She chews on her lower lip as she gazes up at you through the long lashes she definitely got from Seungcheol. Her eyes remind you so much of him and you are forced to look away before you succumb to her pleas.
“Mommy…” Jangmi whines.
“Baby, we can’t visit daddy. He’s at work,” you try to reason with her.
This isn’t the first time she’s asked to visit Seungcheol at work but Jangmi is a bright girl and she is, more often than not, easy to reason with. Only, you’re not so sure this time because if the determined look she’s giving you is any indication, she sure as hell cannot be reasoned with right now.
She shoots you a withering look. It’s the same expression she makes right before she starts crying. Not the wailing kind, though. This version of her tears is the more distressing one. You call it The Silent Killer in your mind because this one is where she makes no sound but tears are free-falling from her eyes. The look she’ll give you is so heartbreaking that there’s nothing else you can do but give in.
Seungkwan and Soonyoung must have finally stopped fighting because your brother suddenly rushes to Jangmi’s side and snatches her up into his arms right before the first tears fall down.
He props her on his hip and sways a little. “What’s wrong, little princess?”
You find yourself slamming your gloved hands on your hips, no doubt smearing sap all over your jeans. “She wants to go visit Seungcheol at work.”
“Can’t she?” Soonyoung looks back at you questioningly, “It’s Friday today, noona. Don’t they usually have less work on Fridays?”
You flash your eyes at him, but he just furrows his brows, not catching on. It’s certainly at times like this that you realize, even though you love your brother, there will always be a time that you’ll want to strangle him. And unfortunately for you, that day is today.
“Hoshi…” your voice is low and you speak slowly, so he finally catches on what you’ve been trying to convey with your eyes, “Seungcheol can’t have visitors at work, remember?”
His lips make an ‘O’ and he turns to Jangmi in mock disappointment. “Sorry, princess.”
She regards him seriously. Well, as serious as four-year-old can look, anyways. Soonyoung is selling her his best sorry-I-really-want-to-but-I-can’t face but you see the exact moment she decides not to buy it.
Then, Jangmi turns to you and extends her arms. “Mommy, let’s visit daddy?”
Figuring she’s not going to stop asking until she gets what she wants, you finally give in, albeit begrudgingly.
“Okay, fine.” You turn to look at Soonyoung. “Tell Seungkwan he’s in charge.” He doesn’t make a fuss about it, but you still give him a pointed look in case he does.
You send Seungcheol a quick warning text before securing Jangmi in her car seat. He hasn’t seen it yet before you drive off but you assume Soonyoung is right and they don’t have much work on Fridays. Besides, it’s almost lunchtime. Jangmi can hang with him while having lunch.
The drive itself doesn’t take long and you’re already at the parking lot before you know it. The receptionist up front recognizes Jangmi and guides you to the elevator leading up to Seungcheol’s floor. Jangmi holds onto your hand and insists on walking. You almost tell her that you’ll get to the elevator faster if she lets you carry her. But you recognize the unmistakable determination in her eyes, and when Jangmi is determined to do something, it’s best to let her do just that.
While waiting for the elevator, you check your phone again. Huh. Still no response. You’re starting to think this might not be a good idea. Seungcheol might actually be busy today that’s why he isn’t opening his phone notifications. You get the urge to carry Jangmi out and cancel this visit, but you know that will not end well for everyone.
So, when the elevator dings, you girls step inside hand-in-hand, and you wish real hard that Seungcheol isn’t too occupied to meet his kid.
Once out of the elevator, you are greeted again by another receptionist behind a desk. He’s all warm smiles when he tells you where Seungcheol’s office is. Normally, he tells you, they don’t really let non-prosecutors inside, but since you’re family, he lets you slip right in. You don’t correct him. He doesn’t need to know you’re not family, anyways.
Inside, the office is almost deserted save for two other people on opposite ends of the room. The receptionist has said Seungcheol has his own breakout room from the main room so your eyes settle on the room with tinted glass.
Jangmi lets you carry her this time, probably tired from walking all along. “Daddy’s over there,” you tell her, pointing at the door with the blinds.
She squeals in excitement. When you get to the door, you put her back down and let her knock on the door herself. Jangmi’s attitude is contagious and you find yourself actually looking forward to possibly having lunch with Seungcheol.
The door opens, but it’s not Seungcheol who answers. You come face to face with a woman in a white shirt and black pencil skirt. Her hair is wild, like she’s run her hand through it a couple of times. Up close, you notice that the top two buttons of her shirt are undone and her mascara is a little smeared on the corners of her eyes. Behind her, Seungcheol is in his dress shirt, sitting behind his desk, his black tie more than a little loose. His hair looks the same as this morning, but then again, it always looks the same no matter the situation.
The woman squints her eyes at Jangmi but the little girl ignores her entirely. She bolts straight to Seungcheol who catches her right on cue. His eyes don’t stay on her, though, because he immediately shifts his focus on you. You momentarily meet his gaze, but you can’t hold it long enough. So, you shift your eyes at the woman in front of you. You swear you see her smirk in his direction before she makes a show of wiping the corners of her lips with her fingers.
Your eyes widen and the woman snickers right before she leaves. You feel like you’ve been slapped. Only, the sting isn’t physical and it hurts worse than a slap. You’re pretty sure your hands are shaking, so you push them both into your pockets.
“Mommy, come in!”
Jangmi’s face is lit up. She doesn’t understand what you’ve understood, but you step into the room, anyway, just so as not to burst her bubble.
Seungcheol adjusts Jangmi on his lap but doesn’t say anything. You feel him willing you to meet his eyes, but you’re not sure you can do it. So, instead, you wander around his office and as if to rub salt into your wound, your sight lands on his suit jacket that is splayed on the floor next to the coat rack like it’s been thrown there in the midst of heated passion.
Suddenly, your mouth runs dry. When you have agreed to go here, your greatest concern has been how to survive lunch with Seungcheol without it being awkward. It does not involve having an encounter with a woman in his office. You don’t judge people off the bat, not really, but this scenario clearly speaks for itself.
Res ipsa loquitur.
The thing speaks for itself. Isn’t that what lawyers say in court?
You don’t know when, but Seungcheol has placed Jangmi on his seat and is now walking to you. He reaches out and strangely, it reminds you of how Jangmi does that when she wants to soften you up to her requests.
You bristle at the thought.
Seungcheol notices this because he pulls his hand back. “YN…”
There’s a begging tone in his voice. What he’s begging for, you don’t know. It’s not like you two are together, so whatever he does with his private life is none of your business. Really. You haven’t even told him if you feel the same way. So, you can’t ask for the loyalty of a person you could possibly be stringing along. It wouldn’t be fair.
“YN, please. I can explain.”
Ah, there it is. The line that’s been so overused and yet, if timed correctly, can still be effective.
You meet his eyes briefly, before settling on Jangmi who is playing a game on his phone behind the desk. The executive chair is threatening to swallow her. Huh. Swallow. Your mind cuts to the woman earlier and how she has wiped her lips so scandalously, there’s no other way to interpret what she’s done. You stop looking at the little girl, your mood turning sourer by the second.
“You don’t have to explain anything, Seungcheol. What you do with your life is none of my business.”
He shoots you a hurt look. “Don’t say that.”
“It is what it is,” you shrug. “I’m sorry we interrupted, but Jangmi wanted to see you and maybe have lunch together. If you’re too busy right now, I can bring her back with me to the shop. No biggie.”
Seungcheol flinches when you give him a reassuring smile, like showing that you couldn’t care less about what you’ve seen physically hurts him. Does he want you to show that you’re hurt? Betrayed? Maybe a little disappointed? You’re not sure.
“Jangmi—” you call when Seungcheol doesn’t say anything else, “—let’s go, baby. Daddy’s got a lot of work to do.”
You chance a look at him, but his face is unreadable and he’s refusing to meet your eyes. Deciding you do not want to dwell in anyone’s business, you go over to Jangmi, who doesn’t put up a fight now that she’s seen whom she has come here for.
You carry her and prop her on your hip. “Say, ‘Bye, daddy!’”
The little girl follows suit and you both wave your hands at him. Seungcheol doesn’t look your way, but he does give Jangmi a kiss on the forehead.
“Be good, okay?”
Jangmi stays with you the whole day and when closing time comes, you’re surprised to see Hansol outside the shop. He’s fidgety and has told you his brother has asked him to pick up Jangmi instead. You bring him to the back room where she’s sleeping. He gathers her in his arms, careful not to wake her. When he’s satisfied with her position, Hansol turns to you with a confused frown.
“Did something happen between you guys?”
“Who?”
“You and Coups hyung.”
You debate whether to tell him the truth or not. Deciding on not, you say, “No. Nothing happened. Why?”
Hansol shrugs. “I don’t know, but hyung seemed upset.”
“That’s got nothing to do with me,” you want to sound nonchalant but your voice cracks at the last syllable.
Hansol hums. If he’s heard that voice crack, he doesn’t let on. “Okay, we’ll be off then. Thanks, noona!”
