to be clear
this is not a problem unique to Wikipedia, it's just that I can't edit all of the other dozens of places where this happens. if anything Wikipedia is leagues ahead of everyone else because at least they're not at my throat 0.3 milliseconds after I suggest that maybe we shouldn't label every character with a developmental disability as autistic
the problem is not "I don't want autism to be associated with intellectual disability", the problem is "intellectual disability in cinema is rendered invisible because it's constantly labeled as autism instead".
accurate documentation of how a character is canonically described is not the end-all be-all, but it is an important step for further analysis and discussion of how developmental disabilities are portrayed
this problem is broader than just intellectual disability (I've seen it happen to cerebral palsy, cognitive impairment due to traumatic brain injury, selective mutism, and others) but intellectual disability is where it happens the most
another day, another instance of having to correct Wikipedia when it describes a character as autistic when the character actually has intellectual disability

I know I overthink a lot about minor aspects of the wiki but I think I just took it to new levels because I spent 30 minutes agonizing over the difference between a minor character vs. supporting character and the worst is I'm still not done with thinking about it

I saw Parker (only one name) from Leverage has been submitted to this blog and actually one of the show creators Dean Devlin confirmed she is canonically autistic, I can't find the link to the video tho. But, whats really awesome is she's never belittled or shown as a bad person or incomptent for stuff like scripting and having an si in thievery. The her team doesn't work around or against her autism, they work with it.

everything about the sort of...cultural legacy of I Am Sam has been deeply frustrating from an autism vs. intellectual disability standpoint. Because Sam is very clearly meant to have intellectual disability, the majority of terms related to describing his disability are ID terms, both in the movie and in the way the actors (especially Sean Penn) talk about the character. But they use the term "autistic tendencies" once and suddenly he is on all the autistic characters lists. Doesn't help that the Indian remake Main Aisa Hi Hoon does fully commit to making him autistic, which causes even more confusion and which fits into the broader trend of intellectual disability in cinema being ignored and erased in favor of autism.

just saw a fandom wiki take the picture I spent two hours editing, without credit. and then another picture where I can't prove they didn't accidentally capture the exact same frame from an extremely obscure character as I did but it is hella suspicious that my watermark is cropped out

ive seen many people in the tags talking about autistic ianto so here's a reminder that gareth david-lloyd thought it possible back in 2014 so its probably influenced the way they write ianto today

Hello. I'm here to talk about another autistic character and how important their characterisation was to the community again because Tobias Bell is something so special and I can't stop thinking about him.
He's so unapologetically himself, even when he knows he's being short. He's reminding me that it's important to have boundaries and it's okay to put your headphones on when you're stressed and overwhelmed, and it's okay to voice when you're confused or stressed, and it's okay to be yourself and talk about the things you love. He's reminding me that it's okay to be me. And it's okay to be autistic. And I love Tobias Bell for that.
There's something so interesting about the way he interacts with the other characters, and there's something so gentle in the way the other characters interact with him. Étoile, at its core, is a show about the quirks of the ballet community, and Tobias' quirks are respected and appreciated by most of the people he interacts with.
The way that Gabin interacts with Tobias, and understands his need for autonomy, space and patience, is my favourite thing. And Genevieve telling him he doesn't have to change himself to fit Paris' expectations and the world should change to accept him and his choreography? Such a powerful commentary about the way society sees autistic people. I cried.
Tumblr media
And the way that Gideon Glick talks about him is so beautiful; the way he described Tobias' difficulty communicating his thoughts and emotions, and talked about how hard it must have been for him to move to a new country with different social expectations and a language barrier is so, so special.
Gideon Glick treated Tobias with so much love and respect, and the entire autism community is so grateful for it. He's such a beautiful character, and he's such unique, brilliant representation.
I really love Tobias Bell, and he is such fun representation for the autism community. Thank you, Étoile. Thank you, Gideon. Thank you, Tobias.

at this point I feel like when someone suggests historical figures or headcanons on my post specifically asking about explicitly autistic characters, that should count as a micro-aggression

update: so Satan, Have Pity was published in February 1963 (or at the latest March), officially dethroning Manfred!
I thought I had found an autistic character from 1962 which would have been groundbreaking because the currently-earliest-known one is from 1963 and we have never been able to find any that's earlier. so finding one that came out just one year before that would have been huge.
but I checked the library of congress information and while they filed for copyright in 1962, it wasn't published until 1963. and I can't find the exact date it was published so we don't know if it was at least earlier in 1963 than the other one (which is from August).
the currently oldest-known thus remains Manfred from Martian Time-Slip, with Terry from Satan, Have Pity giving me a very exciting few days before turning out to be a dud
