my mama's trauma (it runs in the family)
ao3 (chapter 1, 2, 3, 4 / 10)
darrel curtis sr/mrs. curtis, no archive warnings apply, pre-canon, period-typical language
It came out in a rush, all in one breath, like it had literally been choking Maggie to keep a secret. “IthinkImightbeprengnant. And if you are gonna leave me ‘cause of that—” Darrel couldn’t help but let out a laugh, dropping his head into his hands that were propped up on his elbows resting on his thighs. Maggie had called him in a tizzy, asking him to meet her at the park in twenty minutes. Without a rational thought in sight he’d sprinted over, sure that Maggie was breaking up with him. Why? He had no clue. With the extra fifteen minutes, he ran a few laps around the biggest playground.
[ or, the curtis parents as teenagers ]

Thinking about Darry in the musical. A couple things about musicals:
1) the singing in a musical is not diegetic. Unless otherwise specified, the characters are not actually singing and rhyming in-universe, so the songs are not literal transcripts of what they would be saying.
2) musicals emphasize through singing, but they can also emphasize through what is not sung.
I was joking in another post that RITF sounds like a song someone would make up while cleaning the house, “that’s why I’m scrubbin this kitchen, why I’m singin this song.” Darry sings this song while he’s alone, his isolation represented through this being the only song in the musical with no backup vocals from the chorus or anyone else. These are Darry’s private thoughts, his stream of consciousness.
RITFR is a reprise of Darry’s thoughts that he’s only voiced when he’s alone. He’s breaking down in that moment, and I think he’s unleashing a word vomit of sentiments he never intended to say out loud, never meant for his brothers to hear - feeling like his sacrifices aren’t worth it, maybe he should just leave, wishing he had a different life. The musical theme represents him losing control before he literally loses control and slaps Pony.
But what does he not sing? What does he speak through literal dialogue so there’s no question that he’s saying it in-universe; deliberately, geared directly to Ponyboy’s ears? What does he say when the music dies down?
“I love you. Did you hear what I said? I love you.”
#HELPPPP ughhh#also the outsiders is a memory play just like the book is pony writing about his experiences for an assignment#so everything we see is sort of through pony's lens#I think this is so true and I also think there's an element of ponyboy saying 'hmmm . ... what does Darry do when he's home alone...#he complains about folding the laundry obviously duh'#and then the dialogue is more Factual about things#the same is kinda true with the drive in. the song is fantastic and a BIG dance number#but when the song ends that is when we get the accurate picture of what happened at the drive in#idk this turned into a commentary on the songs v dialogue but I think its really interesting#Quinn analyzes
