Evaluation of Project" I Want, I Want" - Haolong Ding
Evaluation of Project" I Want, I Want"
For this project, I have created my own narrative flipbook piece of art as a direct form of visual communication for an art audience to use in gallery. I have chosen one of Shezad Dalwood's sculpture named Kalimpong which was made in the year of 2016 from "I Want, I Want" exhibition. It is interesting to know that Kalimpong is a small town which is located in West Bengal, and the sculpture is a Japanese monk who was called Ekai Kawaguchi. This monk is said to have introduced the French explorer, Alexandra David-Neel, to Dalai Lama at Kalimpong in 1912. Two different cultures met with each other and differences between the past and now are the brief that this work delivered.
The core thought of my work (Give Colour to Kalimpong) is that this sculpture has its own awareness and it does not want to obey the traditional rules, as we are living in a rapidly changing world which is different with any times. To be more specific, the first thing it changed is its appearance. I photographed this plaster sculpture with different angles when I was in the "I Want, I Want" exhibition, and then I painted it differently on my sketch book referenced from the pictures I took. Secondly, various colours were used in my work, despite plaster sculptures are usually made in pure white.
I have conducted some researches in terms of plaster sculptures. For example, I collected many plaster sculptures pictures from the internet and I also did some research on plaster sculptures. I decided to use sectional view which is usually implemented in sculptures to design my work. However, my work begins with eyes and ended with the whole face which is divided in a sectional way. In addition to that, the colours are showed up gradually from the first picture to the last. Vapourwave is another form of art that inspired me, and I found the elements of sculptures and colours are widely used in vapourwave art works after conducting my research on Vapourwave.
Another vital point is audience identification, so other researches have been conducted. Young people under 30 is this work's target audience, as Give Colour to Kalimpong reflects young people's thoughts and I want also to express my opinions about the world to young people which are in the similar age with me through my work. There are many purposes and reasons for my choice of my target audience. Firstly, I think that the self-awareness of Kalimpong reflects young people's characteristics, as young people usually have higher self-awareness and sense of existence than people in other age. Secondly, I hope that young people can feel time passing when they look at my work, given that this work is a flip book with changing colour. Thirdly, adding colour to a sculpture which is about a monk is rebellion of mainstream culture, as religions are normally serious. As a result of that, I hope young people can respect minority culture. Last but not least, I hope young people who will get exposure to my work to be interested in the history, especially about the history of Kalimpong.
The process of making Give Colour to Kalimpong was inspiring, because conducting research helps me understand the specific history and many forms of sculptures. Furthermore, this process allows me to be more familiar with some tools. Specifically speaking, I have learnt the skills of Illustrator and Photoshop from some workshops and online courses. Furthermore, learning and implementation of these software has enhanced my abilities to deal with pictures.
