Update on how this method went for me: Definitely took longer than prescribed antibiotics - about a week before discomfort was completely gone vs a day. It definitely relieved the pain to something manageable by day 2. By week 2 the infection cleared up. This method seems better if you're prone to getting low risk UTIs that are happening closer to the urethra and you can't be assed to drop $60+ multiple times a year. HOWEVER if you are having disruptive levels of pain or have symptoms of a kidney/bladder infection please please please just go to the doctor. The prescription will work faster if it's just a bad UTI and kidney infections are catastrophic when untreated.

OP takes acetylcystein (NAC) supplements for 2 weeks or as needed alongside D-mannose (both over the counter supplements you can buy for >$20 at your grocery pharmacy section/supplement store).

The Spanish article mentioned is probably this one (Perez-Giraldo et al., 1997), but more research was done recently with similar results (even though the focus is on catheter associated UTIs because god forbid women be the focus of medical research) - link here (Manoharan et al., 2023).
