As someone with both a lit and writing degree, I legit partly blame the rise of internet aesthetics for some people's inability to think critically about uncomfortable topics in literature and other forms of media.

Like, for instance, if you were introduced to "Gothic Horror" via internet mood boards and, thus, only interact with it via pleasing, well orchestrated, pictures that don't particularly go beyond "aesthetic"... and therefore, aren't interacting with the genre in the same way one would if they were reading a famous title. Then you might not be engaging in the same kind of bitter critique a book of the genre would be trying to imply.

"Gothic Horror" therefore becomes a term for curated escapism as opposed to a term for a designated type of genre suggesting what one can expect from the story. It becomes a game of trying to find one's favorite aesthetic in the work, as opposed to its actual meaning and what it's trying to say. So, no wonder people get upset.

They open a book looking for their favorite kind of escape (no shade, seriously) and feel like they're suddenly getting slapped in the face with incest, or SA- from a genre known for critiquing rich people and the horrors they commit in the name of the smallest kind of power and influence behind closed doors.

It's legitimately why I personally try not to engage in internet aesthetic anymore and just live by the philosophy of "I like what I like".

There should be a conlang community but for math. I wanna see counting with factorial base systems and people make up symbols for increasingly useless numbers. Maybe this can make some calculations more intuitive and others much more cursed.
