HARPER SIMONE, 19. CLASSICIST. DEAF. In the great words of fantastic lyricist, Fetty Wap (and to make myself look cool despite merely only googling the Trap Queen song everyone is still obsessed with?): Hey, what's up, hello? If you don't already know the weird girl who wanders around with a copy of Ovid's poetry under her arm, well you sure do now! My entire life is basically fangirling over Catullus (during his more boyish romantic years, not the lamenting ones), filling my life with as much colour as possible, spending too much money on branded clothing while still failing to look cool and educating people on the importance of ASL. (Yes, I'm a member of the Deaf community. Yes, I have cochlear implants. Yes, I can understand you, you don't need to shout.)

I hope you have a wonderful time at home, Bodhi. Seems like you could thoroughly use the break and reacquaintance with your roots. Chin up! Chicago will always be here for us afterwards!
I’m so happy to go home that I actually started crying while I was packing earlier this morning. Chicago is okay but home is so much better.

My goodness, LA? Have a magical time there! If you see Orlando Bloom, please slip him my number. Just on the off chance, you know.
After rechecking my suitcase and my backpack, along with counting the amount of tanks and skirts that I have packed. I think I can say that Im successfully ready for LA. Im so excited to be going there for Spring Break, and enjoying the sun after looking at schools. Who knows, I might take a surfing lesson and try new things. Im also planning on getting a few souvenirs. Let’s hope we don’t get lost! What’s everyone’s plans for Spring Break?

I hope you wellness continues to blossom, my friend. As I’ve mentioned, you’re more than welcome to contact me as an impartial source of advice. I really hope that you practice pays off and that I can slip in to see you at some point. I have yet to really truly immerse myself in music, and according to my own doctor I really should be exercising all different aspects of hearing. So I’d love to find out the beauty of classical music.
I guess I, um, took my spring break a little early. I had to go back to the hospital for a few days but I’m back now and better. So I hope everybody had a nice week and I’ll be in the practice rooms if anybody needs me. I’m working on a few movements from Pictures at an Exhibition which might take up a bit more concentration than I’m used to, but I’m… happy to talk to anyone. I think.

Congratulations! As someone with a severe lack of creativity, I am in absolute awe at seeing my incredible peers becoming actual selling artists! This is only the beginning for you!
Just got off a phone call and I’m having my first ever piece of work for sale in an art gallery. Although it isn’t a rather huge one, it is still pretty awesome. Hopefully I’m get some good money off of it after all these years of buying endless expensive suplies.

My dearest and loveliest Hamifam! I hope your Spring Break is full of incredible wonder. Whether you’re getting drunk on beaches or spending time at home with loved ones or making the most of campus being relatively quiet.
I left a few days early for a little pit stop at my doctor’s office (all is well I promise!) but now you can bet your bottom dollar that I’m back in my jodphurs and vests and on horse back exploring my beautiful home town again. As much as I adore Chicago and all of you, it’s nice to be home with my mom. Plus, I’ve managed to get my hands on the most gorgeous dress for the military charity ball my incredible father has been organising like the absolute King Charming he is. Stay tuned for obnoxious Instagramming of me and the handsome Air Force!
May I suggest taking the time in this week to open up a book and engaging your brains in something outside of your majors? If you’d like a quick, insightful read? I thoroughly recommend Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zavin. Especially if you’re interested in the potential of reincarnation or past lives! I, personally, have been thoroughly inspired to pick up The Passage by Justin Cronin - so if anyone is a secret Vampire lover like myself? Please join me! It can be a cute little Hamilton Book Club!

I’m used to it. Unfortunately. I don’t think people need reasons to be so horrible anymore. They just decide to dislike people at first glance and there’s no changing their minds. Most people aren’t fully educated in the ancient world, so don’t worry about it. I’m not judging too heavily. I don’t want to subject you to me ranting on about my favourite Latin poetry. Oh please tell me I haven’t missed it! You seem like a girl who loves her shoes and I’ve got the perfect ones in mind for your birthday, whenever it may be.
That’s like all so unfair for you, I mean, I don’t have a disability or anything so I can’t relate but I’m so not understanding of people being so mean and ignorant for no reason towards anyone that they don’t know very well, or at all in most cases. I have no idea what you were talking about after the whole sandwich thing, but if it’s stuff you like to talk about I’ll totes listen. As for me, my day is better than it was the other day, I haven’t spilled my coffee and I’m less confused about life since I know when my birthday was.

Well, if you ever want someone to adventure with you, then I’m more than happy to come along. I’m Harper, for the record. I should have lead with that. And I’m more than happy to be considered a friend or ally, whatever you choose. I spent a lot of my childhood in hospitals, so I know the feeling. I mean, I’m very lucky my contraction of meningitis didn’t end up in anything other than the loss of my hearing, but my muscles were in a very sorry state by the time I recovered. Well, I hope you manage to out stubborn them eventually. It’s remarkable what modern medicine can do, but the body is even more remarkable. We could be a right pair, you know. I can be your mobility and you can be my hearing. I’m tired of relying so heavily on my implants.
Extremely. I enjoy exploring, even if it’s currently difficult. I’m with you on the not meeting many people thing, though. Thank you. Seems like a few people here know how it is, which is pretty cool. Back home I didn’t really know anyone who had been through it, besides the people I met in the waiting room at the hospital. Oh, it’s targeting my legs. They kinda refuse to move very much. They’re as stubborn as I am.

I wouldn’t be able to analyse either, but I’d be interested in any results. I’m actually interested to see what you could take from my drawing now. Are there any tell tale signs? It’s actually been a few years. I got them a few months before I started college. But I was a little against getting them. My parents were just looking out for me, I suppose. And it does make classes a little easier. I prefer reading overall, but if it’s something I’ve watched enough that I can drift in and out while watching and not need my implants or subtitles to figure out which part of the movie it is? Then I prefer that. Unfortunately, there’s a limited selection.
I mean, if I could choose, I’d be in Ancient Greece. But I’m definitely more of a Roman than a Greek. They were incredibly civilised, smart and very free. Did you know that Ancient Greeks accepted the notion of genderfluidity and sexual fluidity? Often sexual practice was between members of the same sex to optimise their game and no one cared or said anything about it. Plus everyone walked around naked 70% of the time and there was no body shaming. Sounds like a beautiful society. My love for maxi skirts really does make the 60s sound appealing, I’ll admit. Although it also makes me want to online shop and beg for summer to come around.
I’m definitely not in the business of actually diagnosing someone with any psychological disorder, but I’d be really happy to see them draw a picture of their childhood home and see what the reveals about their personality, to be perfectly honest! Oh, wow! That’s really fascinating. May I ask how long you’ve had the implants in for? I find myself drifting in and out of focus when I watch TV so I certainly have to admire your determination. Do you prefer television to reading, may I ask?
Ancient Rome sounds like a nice place to be, minus the slavery and somewhat mistreatment of women. If I had to pick another time to be in, I think I’d pick the 1960′s. Free love sounds fantastic, as does crocheted tops and maxi skirts.

It’s a little overwhelming, isn’t it? But, considering I’m normally only in one area of the campus, I haven’t really explored any of it or met too many people. Congratulations on your physical therapy, though! I’ve been there. It’s a rough long haul, but definitely worth it for the improvements over time. I hope you continue to improve at a quick pace, whatever your therapy is targeting!
Hamilton is so much bigger than I ever anticipated it’d be. I’ve been here weeks, and I still get lost. On the bright side, I did even better than I normally do at physical therapy today. I’d ask how all of you are, but I actually don’t care all that much. Feel free to tell me, if you must, though.

The wind I can deal with, it’s the temperature I’m struggling with. Never in my life have I had to buy thermal socks before now. I just miss wearing cigarette trousers and cute woven flats. And sleeveless longline vests. My Spring wardrobe is weeping. Well, if you’re into quality and don’t mind spending a little more, I definitely recommend Zara scarves. Mine is saving my life. Although the ugly hat I’m cursed with, I can’t recommend.
It’s the Windy City for a reason. I’m so tired of the cold weather, too. I miss my shorts. I’ve literally never worn a scarf, and I never want to.

Arkansas, mostly. Utah and Florida before that, although I don’t remember either. So, Illinois is definitely still a shock to my system.
I totally feel ya. I miss being in California. Where are you from?
