Without a word, Astele dropped two letters in front of the druid, unable to look at the other woman. "I found this on one of them." her voice void of anything, even the usual strength. Astele crossed her arms over her chest, moving a bit further away as she started tapping an empty cabinet with growing unease or rather.. growing anger. It'd quickly become clear as to why, as the first letter would reveal to Jaheira that Rilsa had been brutally murdered by the Zhent. The other letter would reveal that the Zhent dismantled part of The Guild and had taken over since the Guildmaster's disappearance. She failed her, she failed all of them.
Tumblr media
Jaheira picked up the letters with wariness, the Guildmaster's body language already telling her more than she wished to know. Her eyes skimmed the words, the news sinking heavy into her chest at every line. Rilsa, Astele's right hand, was gone. Brutally cut down. The Guild shattered, gutted. Now crawling with Zhentarim rot. For a moment, she only stared at the letters in her hands. She was silent, but her mind was racing, trying to think of something — anything — that could soothe the storm she saw brewing in Astele’s rigid stance.
But very early on Jaheira learned that a woman like Astele had no use for soft words.
Tumblr media
When Jaheira finally looked up, she hesitated, unsure if comfort would even be welcomed. Still, she reached out, her hand steady as she set it firmly on Astele’s shoulder, giving it a grounding squeeze. “We will hunt them down. Every last one.” No softness in her voice, only a vow. She stayed there, holding the silence as though it were part of the promise.
Then, when words had done all they could, Jaheira pulled Astele closer, wrapping her arms around her. She knew a woman like Astele had no use for soft words… But Jaheira also knew that sometimes, even the strongest needed to be held.

It was downright impossible to keep a straight face when he winked like that, or at least Jaheira assumed that was what he thought he was doing. Sometimes she genuinely wondered if Jarlaxle remembered the eyepatch meant he only had one visibly functioning eye.
“Unwillingly...” Gods, that truly was the word, wasn’t it? Except, of course, for the tiny detail that nine times out of ten she knew exactly what kind of mess she was stepping into… and still stepped anyway.
Tumblr media
And yes, curse him, the bastard was right. There was a very limited amount of trouble that they could not handle, and luckily they didn't come across any of those up until now. But she wasn’t about to admit it, of course. Instead, she delivered a sharp, playful elbow to his ribs, though her cackle made her amusement pretty clear.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jaheira rolled her eyes so hard she was surprised they didn’t fall out of her skull. “Oh, of course. Run away to Luskan, you say? What a tempting offer. I could abandon all sense and responsibility, take up a life of piracy, and spend my days untangling the web of whatever mess you’ve spun this time.” She placed a hand over her chest in mock sincerity. “Truly, Jarlaxle, you paint such a compelling future for me.”
Tumblr media
In fact, Jaheira knew very damn well that Jarlaxle Baenre could certainly bail anyone out of pretty much anything, but she already started the scolding so there was no turning back now. She huffed, crossing her arms. “And don’t you ‘my lady’ me. I know exactly what that means coming from your lips. You’ll be the one dragging me into trouble, and then have the audacity to act surprised when I save your sorry hide.” She smirked, shaking her head. “But fine. If it all goes sideways, I suppose I’ll let you think you bailed me out — for your ego’s sake.”

Jaheira wanted to believe that Halsin might hold the key to ending this curse. She truly wanted. But decades had carved deep grooves of caution into her heart, worn down by failed rituals, broken promises, and various desperate attempts (including some of her own) that had gone nowhere. Hope had a way of burning hot and dying quickly... Too many winters had taught her that.
Even so, she would not be the one to snuff out another’s flame. If Rowan, Halsin, or anyone else chose to believe, then she would meet their hope with steady pragmatism, not dismissal.
“If there is a path forward,” she said softly, her tone neither bright nor bitter, “I hope you find it.”
Rowan's next words should have been ordinary but Jaheira felt the chill slide over her skin like the brush of a ghost’s hand. It was not Rowan’s tone that unsettled her, but the flicker, the shadow that tugged at the corners of her smile before she smothered it. A slip. Brief, but sharp enough to bring the Harper's senses to an edge.
It was a cold awareness, as if her body remembered something her mind could not yet name. That sensation of half threat, half déjà vu... She knew this feeling, the echo of some old darkness that had once walked too close to her life, but the shape of it eluded her. Not yet clear. Not yet safe.
So Jaheira did what age taught her to do when faced with the unknown: she decided to watch. Not openly, not with accusation, but with a careful, measuring patience. Curiosity tempered with wariness, steel sheathed in civility.
“Let us hope not.” She agreed evenly, though her gaze lingered longer than courtesy required. A vow formed quiet and firm in her chest: she would keep a close eye on this one. A very close eye.
“If you mean to strike a caravan, you want high ground and cover. There are old buildings scattered along the road that can break their line of sight and give you the element of surprise. Hit hard, hit fast, and vanish before they can rally reinforcements.” She tilted her head, a faint smirk tugging at the corner of her mouth. “But, judging by the sharpness in your eyes and the way your people move, I suspect you hardly need my advice. Only my tools.” Straightening, she gave Rowan a look that was half invite, half command. “I’ll expect you in the morning, then. Preparations for battle wait for no one.”

There was something about this woman that Rowan couldn’t place.
When they had first arrived at Last Light Inn, she had suspected it wouldn’t be as easy as ‘save a couple of Harpers and get to stay in the one place that was safe from the shadow curse.’ Jaheira attacking her wouldn’t have been a surprise- if it wasn’t for Rowan’s own reaction. When Rowan heard her name, and worse, when she saw her, a wave of overwhelming emotion crashed on her. She was filled with an unyielding grief: raw and almost violent that it took everything in her to not break down and cry at the sight of this stranger. As quickly as the feelings had come they had gone, and by then she was tangled in vines.
She couldn’t be sure, but she thought she saw some kind of reaction from Jaheira too. Did she know her from before she lost her memories? Did Rowan have some subconscious memory or something? Granted, she was occupied with convincing Jaheira not to kill her when they first met so that took up most of her attention.
When the Druid appeared behind her at the lake she felt that sadness again, but it was damped and gone quicker than before.
She nodded along with Jaheia telling her not to drink from the lake; she wasn't planning on doing so… anymore.
When Jaheira asked where she was from, her suspicions rose again. Was this a trick? An attempt to confirm Rowan’s identity? Perhaps Jaheira did know who she was before.
“I’m not sure actually. The mindflayers did something to my head, I don't remember anything before waking up on the nautiloid.”
To give Jaheira some evidence that her story was true, she pulled a fistful of her hair aside to show some of the scars she had. The scars gave her head the appearance of having been severely damaged before being pieced back together. They looked older than made sense if she got them on the nautiloid with the others. Maybe she was taken before them.
“Since we ended up in the Emerald Grove and I was-” she stopped herself from saying ‘scared of dying without a god,’ she’d sound shallow and unknowledgeable on ceromorphosis. Which she was but whatever,
“-inspired… and in need of some kind of skill so I became a druid… And named myself Rowan to have a ‘nature-y’ name. Anyway, that's me.” That was probably enough to satisfy Jaheira, that was just about all Rowan knew anyway.

✨ My Queen! ✨
I fell for her since the first moment I saw her: she's sassy, she's cool and strong! And she's a druid, she can turn into an owlbear (and a panther). And can we talk about her accent?? I love how her voice actress has played her, she's divine! 💚
I can't wait to meet her (and her hubby 👀) in Baldur's Gate 1 and 2! I bought both of them few times ago, but I didn't have time yet to play 😭
My commission are open, ☕ Visit my Ko-fi shop, link in bio, or send me a DM on Instagram if you need more infos! ✨🫰🏻

“JAHEIRAAAAAAAA-!”
Here comes Minsc, with all the grace of a sledgehammer — grabbing the High Harper from behind and nearly crushing her in a bear hug.
Classic Minsc.
“You’ve returned! This is good news!! Minsc has managed to not cause chaos in your absence — even Boo can attest to this!”
“Don’t listen to him, Jaheira,” Sarevok sat in the group’s makeshift camp in the Elfsong, sharpening his sword, “He wild shaped into a spider after the Druid taught him how, didn’t realize it was a giant spider beforehand, and then acted confused when he wasn’t fuckin minuscule. Pretty sure the hamster was laughing at him.”
“Boo would NEVER-“

Jaheira let out a noise that could be described as something between a yelp and a laugh as two strong arms wrapped around her from behind and lifted her from the ground.
“Minsc—!” she managed, breathless, twisting slightly in his grip. “By the gods, warn a woman before you attack her with affection—”
But she didn’t really mean it. Her hands clutched at his arms, more for balance than protest, and though she squirmed in mock indignation, her heart was happy. He was here. Whole. Loud. Ridiculous. Exactly as he should be.
“I missed you too...” she murmured, reaching up to squeeze his cheek. Then, she tilted her head to the hamster nearby. "Yes, yes, I missed you too, Boo. Don't be jealous!"
Sarevok's voice caught her attention, and she could only blink at the Bhaalspawn's words. Then she blinked again. "The druid did what?” Her voice held both fondness and disbelief in equal measures. "Oh, this is a story I simply need to hear."
"And what about you, hmm?" She tried to sound stern, but the smile gave her away. "How many of your father's little copies are still scuttling about, waiting for you to hunt them down?"
