Headcanons about Tuvok's parents and home life below [Patreon | Commissions]
My (most used) headcanon for Tuvok's parents is that his mother is a priestess and thus didn't live with the family (Tuvok only cites his father sending him away as a teen but says both his parents wished for him to be in Starfleet, so she was still alive) Tuvok would often go to the temple to speak to her. As a child he would make the journey there just to complain about small things his dad did that irritated him. When they spoke face-to-face he would address her not as 'Mother' but as 'Reldai' and as a small child he didn't really understand who she was. (Don't parents live in your house?)
As he grew older, he'd talk to her about more important things and began to distance himself from his father because of the Starfleet issue and later being disowned then reinstated as his son. Tuvok felt very...had a lot of complex thoughts and feelings towards his father, all that on top of just being a teenager. With his mother, the distance kept things simple. I don't think Tuvok spent a large amount of quality time with either parent after he reached a certain age. His mother lived at the temple and he was old enough not to bother her with petty things and his father, a Starfleet officer, was gone for long stretches of time. Sunak tried to convince Tuvok to come travel with him on a starship but Tuvok was very much against it. When he was a child he just point blank refused but when he grew older he came up with logically sound reasons he shouldn't have to leave Vulcan. I headcanon he was tutored at home after he was disowned and subsequently un-disowned; he missed a lot of school and didn't want to re-enroll to repeat a grade. His father agreed because he didn't want Tuvok getting another crush anyway. So, Tuvok stayed with relatives or relatives came to his home for a while but eventually he was old enough that he could just stay at home alone. Which he did. When I picture Tuvok as an adolescent he's in a very old home at the edge of a desert, alone or with an elder. You can hear the wind howling. I think he's from a family of some importance (see, him being tutored personally by a Vulcan Master since he was a toddler) and his general attitude <3 but I don't think they're KNOWN y'know? It's more like being the pastor's son in a religious town than being the son to the ambassador of Vulcan. He's notable for being the son a priestess (who don't habitually marry or have children) and Sunak is notable for having a priestess for a wife. I also think Sunak is just very sociable, unlike his son. He has a lot of connections. Tuvok has had a turbulent relationship with his father that's gone through a lot. Now, Tuvok is very dutiful with regards to his father. He's the prodigal son after all but there were several periods of them not speaking and the disownment and the quitting Starfleet BUT...before all that Sunak would spoil him so much. His only child <3 When Sunak would come home from Starfleet missions he'd have several gifts for Tuvok (justified as an attempt to expand his horizons and get him more interested in joining Starfleet). As a small child Tuvok would huff and run away from and generally be cold to him for a day or two before warming up again. When he grew older he accepted the gifts right away - listless and polite. Tuvok always knew he wanted more than one child once he knew he wanted children at all, so they'd never be alone. And because of how he was raised he has confidence that he doesn't need to be there physically all the time for them to grow into good people. Though he'd of course prefer to be there. Him leaving the temple to pursue a life with T'Pel also ties into how he was raised - putting his family before his work as his parents didn't.

i'd love to see them taking the normal tourist-hikes around ruins or renaissance buildings. they'd be so quiet with each other. janeway grows more and more solemn or overwhelmed in a delillo-the-names-"the parthenon was not a thing to study but to feel. it wasn't aloof rational timeless pure"-kind-of way. janeway there to feel connected to people, to humans, and tuvok indulging in her ramblings about the mathematics of architecture, both engineering and aesthetic, absorbing this intently, an exploration tempered with serenity instead of feverish will/need. and then later, obviously, with the wine, they and chakotay discuss city-building and city-keeping like the civics-nerds they all are.

TUVOK: A friend of yours? SEVEN: My cabin mate. As a Borg, I was accustomed to cohabitating with thousands of other drones, but I find it significantly more difficult to live with a single human. TUVOK: In what way? SEVEN: Ensign Brooks is negligent. She leaves her equipment lying around the quarters and her clothing on the floor. TUVOK: Indeed. I have found that most humans are less than meticulous when it comes to their domestic habits. SEVEN: Indeed.
their special club of meticulous domestic habits includes a quarterly publication, issued on the notice board in the mess hall, which details tips for organization and before-and-after photos of tuvok and seven breaking into other people's rooms and cleaning up their shit for them. seven has done this to b'elanna's drawer of doodads and scrap minerals several times and b'elanna only pretends to be mad about it. she likes the little labels that seven prints out.
