if you make that female character less goth as a sign of her ~healing~ or ~improving her life~ I will kill you
make her MORE gloriously dark and over-the-top. she's growing into herself. she's getting comfortable being who she wants to be. do you see the vision. I am crying and throwing things

“Fairy tales — the proper kind, those original Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen tales I recall from my Eastern European childhood, unsanitized by censorship and unsweetened by American retellings — affirm what children intuitively know to be true but are gradually taught to forget, then to dread: that the terrible and the terrific spring from the same source, and that what grants life its beauty and magic is not the absence of terror and tumult but the grace and elegance with which we navigate the gauntlet.”
— Maria Popova, “The Importance of Being Scared: Polish Nobel Laureate Wisława Szymborska on Fairy Tales and the Necessity of Fear”

I bring a very "the image of women smoking as an act of feminist liberation- while deriving from a very real desire to rebel against unfair restrictions on women's public behavior -was created at least in part by tobacco companies to sell more cigarettes, from Edward Bernays' 1929 'torches of freedom' march in the NYC Easter parade to Phillip Morris sponsoring How to Smoke lectures for female audiences" vibe to party that the Uncritically Viewing the 1920s As A Feminist Utopia On Every Axis crowd don't appreciate

So... would those tobacco campaigns be some of the earliest examples of "purplewashing", i.e. companies co-opting feminist causes for their sake of promoting their own products?
yep, absolutely!
the interesting thing about 1920s purplewashing is that like...it's in textbooks now
I wasn't exaggerating in my tags about questioning the narrative as a kid, because it was literally in my history books. in discussing the radical changes to women's lives, smoking and new fashions were mentioned alongside the vote, almost every time. the fashion conversation is at least a case of Nuance and not as much Bad thing Masquerading As Social Progress, but the smoking always got me. it was the early 2000s! we'd all grown up with anti-smoking programs! smoking killed my grandmother- I'd visited her grave, near my big brother's and my cousin's, and Daddy always seemed really sad that she'd died so young! Smoking Bad!
and all of a sudden it was "women could smoke and that was great progress!" from these books? what?
obviously kid!Marzi knew that girls shouldn't be stopped from doing something just because we were girls, but. cognitive dissonance, big-time
and then I learned that tobacco companies nursed that idea from spark to flame and it's like. well, that makes sense- and it worked too well, so now everyone dances to their tune of Women Smoking In the 1920s Was Good and Liberating Actually

Hey as much as I agree with your reblogs about AI, reading them is still inherently... depressing to hear. Do you have any advice for how to keep doing what you love even in the face of all this AI shit?
honestly, for me it's been going out into the world and being surrounded by people who do what they love and mostly ignore AI
there are still a fair number out there! it can be easy to feel like everyone uses it 24/7 when you're in online spaces that amplify the voices of people who are already hooked, in the name of discussing the problem. but honestly, the number of times I've had someone openly use an AI search engine or ChatGPt around me in real life is extremely minimal. and the number of times I've heard someone dismissively say, "oh, that image is just AI? ugh, never mind, then" is pretty high (they may not understand the issues with it, but there does seem to be a stigma against generated "artistic" content even among the general public- at least in my neckii of the woods)
keep hope. keep fighting. doing what you do sans the Plagiarism Engine, and calling out the issues with it, DOES have an impact- I have to believe that

In honor of the Lars of the Stars spinoff announcement, here's another space hero paying tribute to Captain Harlock in his costume (from the original Marvel Star Wars series, issue 79's "The Big Con", written by Jo Duffy and illustrated by Ron Frenz)

YES that would be amazing!
No joke I have been waiting for this exact spinoff to happen for SO LONG and I am SO FUCKING HAPPY. I already love various other space opera series (Star Wars, Star Trek, etc.) so to have something like it in Steven Universe (which certainly had elements of it, but it wasn't always the main focus) is SO FUCKING COOL TO ME.
I want to see the old Era 2 elites to try and stage a coup against the new Gem leadership, I think that would be v cool :D
