The timing was terrible: there was a war on, they were both Aurors and the Ministry needed all hands on deck to quell the rising violence of the Death Eaters, both Alice and Frank were secretly members of the vigilante organization the Order of the Phoenix...but none of that mattered when Neville looked up at her and said “ma.” Alice was smitten faster and more thoroughly than she’d ever been in her life -- even by Frank. Now she’ll do whatever she has to in order to keep her son safe, whether that means taking on double-shifts at work...or stepping back outside the law once again. She knows Frank will have her back; they were partners long before they were spouses, before they were parents -- and Longbottoms don’t back down. Neither do Greengrasses, but Alice didn’t learn real family loyalty until she met her in-laws; the people who raised Alice were the sort who believed that a family tree sometimes had to be pruned for the overall good. Frank is a careful, methodical man who likes to make a plan and then follow it through to conclusion -- a policy that has stood him in good stead in his career as an Auror. Few things catch him off guard (even falling in love with Alice was a slow, well-paced process) and he certainly never intended to add the uncertainty of children to his life -- but when a sister found herself in trouble, he and Alice couldn’t refuse. Agreeing to become a parent was one of the few spontaneous decisions of Frank’s life, and also one of the best choices he’s ever made. For all the upheaval a growing boy brings, Frank can’t imagine their life without Neville now --and he never will. Let the Death Eaters concoct a hundred prophecies, resurrect a dozen Dark Lords; Frank won’t let anyone touch a hair on his son’s head. He’ll do whatever it takes to keep his son safe -- just like he did whatever was necessary to save the whole wizarding world from Voldemort in the first place. When the Ministry of Magic let the Longbottoms down in the face of darkness, they joined the Order of the Phoenix to do what was right that the law could not. Justin knew he was going to like the magical world right away: the Hogwarts teacher who brought him his acceptance letter was the first person outside the family to ever use his real name. For all that he later boasted about almost going to Eton like his brother, Justin hadn’t been sure that they would do that -- or that they’d even accept him as a student at all. Maybe part of him wonders if he shouldn’t have tried, just to see what would happen...but if Hogwarts was the “safer” option in some ways, in others it was anything but safe. Still, the castle put him in the boys’ dormitory and no one ever used his dead name, and the potions master even brewed a special draught that would help Justin transition more easily than he’d have been able to do in the Muggle world; what was the occasional hex or blood-status slur compared to that? It was a difficult adjustment, going from the top of the social heap to the bottom (nobody at Hogwarts had even heard of the Finch-Fletchleys!) but Justin always knew he was going to face difficult adjustments if he wanted to be himself. He might as well take the ones that came with magic.

Fitting-in has always been a struggle for Hermione -- fitting-in, making friends. It was one thing she couldn’t master; one test she could never pass. From an early age she’d always been driven, desperate to be the best...to be the smartest. She poured-over her textbooks; wrote three times the length of her assignments; always had her hand raised first, ready to give the answer -- and it was always, always the right answer. That mattered. Being right matters. Too bad it doesn’t earn you any friends; instead you get called “bossy” or “know-it-all,” like that’s a bad thing. By now, she’s gotten used to people rolling their eyes and whispering behind her back (she’d hoped the magical world would be different, but it wasn’t really a surprise that it wasn’t) but now that she’s a prefect, things are different: now it’s her responsibility to keep her fellow Gryffindors in line, to make sure everybody follows the rules. She’d thought being prefect might finally win her some friends, or at least some respect -- but instead it just seems to make everybody like her even less. Well, Hermione isn’t going to let that get her down; she doesn’t need friends. As long as she’s still got the highest marks in her year, she knows she’s doing just fine on her own.

Hannah thinks it’s great that her mum’s an Auror, she really does -- thinks it’s great that her mum’s a hero. She just wishes that it wasn’t so intimidating, trying to live up to her! It seems like Mary Abbott has put more Death Eaters in jail than Hannah has collected chocolate frog cards, so how can she help but feel that she’s failing her as a daughter every time she does something that’s just okay? That’s why Hannah tries so hard in all her classes -- and why the idea of not being good enough is so stressful. She knows that makes for a vicious cycle: she worries so much that she can’t concentrate and ends up messing-up her spells or forgetting the answer for the test which makes her worry more which makes it even harder to concentrate...and so on. It’s not even like her mum is putting pressure on her to follow in her footsteps and be an Auror; Hannah’s doing it all to herself, and she knows it. She just doesn’t know how to stop. Lately things have taken a turn for the worse, though, because now her mum is stressed too -- worried that Hannah won’t be ready to take care of herself if something bad happens. She won’t say what that could be, but Hannah can tell she’s stressed and that makes her stressed in turn. All the extra lessons in dueling and defensive spells with her mum this summer were interesting, and being an Auror keeps Mary busy so it was nice to spend the extra time together...but the lessons didn’t do anything to help Hannah relax either.
