A young man named Parn, who dreams of being a knight like his father, is drawn into the heart of the conflict. Luckily, he has a trusty band of companions to aid him, including beautiful elf Deedlit; cantankerous dwarf Ghim; wise sorcerer Slayn; kind cleric and childhood friend Etoh; and Woodchuck, the roguish thief. Fearsome dragons, evil wizards and a formidable black knight are but a few of the perils that await Parn on his quest to become a true hero. Record of Lodoss War is a 13-part OVA based on a series of novels, which were in turn based on their author’s D&D sessions. As a result, the show is a very straight-forward and serious take on the Western fantasy genre. The story is a sweeping epic, and if it strays toward the routine at times it is saved by its appealing characters, who rise above their D&D trappings. Visually, Record of Lodoss War is entrancing with its fully realized fantasy world and rich character designs, which are greatly enhanced by some strong cel work courtesy of artist Nobuteru Yuki (Five Star Stories, Vision of Escaflowne).
