Stall name: Ho-Bee Roasted Food
Address: Hawker centre at Blk 628 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 4, #01-84
Item: Roasted Pork & Roasted Duck Rice
Price: $5.00
Review: There’s always a queue at this stall so I usually don’t bother, but I decided to try it today. We also ordered the Char Siew & Roast Pork Rice ($4). Among the three meats, the duck was the best, so soft and boneless, and the skin was nice too. The roast pork was a close second, with soft, lean meat and minimal fat and crispy skin. The char siew was not so good; just ordinary. I also like that it came with a generous side of achar and a bowl of soup.
For the char siew/roast pork rice, it was only $4. Very hard to find such cheap ones nowadays. My roast pork/duck rice was $5 but the portion of meat was generous. Now I understand why the stall is so popular. I will definitely go for the roast pork/duck again.

Stall name: Ah Heng Curry Chicken Bee Hoon Mee
Address: Hong Lim hawker centre #02-59
Item: Curry Chicken Mee
Price; $6
Review: One of the famous stalls at Hong Lim hawker centre. In fact, they have another stall next to this one, separated by a walkway. Not sure if there is any difference between the two stalls, but there was a slight queue at this #02-59 stall and no queue at the other one when we visited.
I liked the curry soup, it was tasty and had the right thickness and viscosity. The chicken was nice and tender but there were only four pieces of meat. Lots of Tau Pok, maybe three slices of fish cake and one small potato. The portion of noodles is also very little.
Overall, I think it tastes good but it’s expensive. Not something I would eat often or queue up for.

Stall name: Golden Mile Curry Rice
Address: Golden Mile hawker centre #01-110
Item: Chicken chop rice set ($3.50) + braised pork ($1.50)
Price: $5
Review: I love curry rice, and it’s quite hard to go wrong with this dish, so this is usually a safe choice. Of course, the curry is the most important. It has to have the right viscosity — not too thick or watery, and have the right taste — not too salty, spicy, or worst of all, tasteless. This stall does the curry right.
The portions were also generous. The additional piece of braised pork was quite big and it was soft and not too fatty. Overall, it tasted good and was great value for money. I will gladly eat this again.

Stall name: Food Street Fried Kway Teow Mee
Address: Chinatown Complex hawker centre, #02-173
Item: Char Kway Teow
Price: $4
Review: There is usually a queue for this stall during the peak meal hours, but there wasn’t a queue when I went around 2:30pm, so I gave it a try. The noodles were moist but not too oily. Taste was quite good — right balance of spicy, savoury and sweet. But the cockles were tiny and there were very few of them. It is decent, but not something worth queuing up for.

Stall name: Toa Payoh Rojak
Address: Old AirPort Road hawker centre #01-108
Item: Rojak
Price: $3 (small)
Review: My friend said this was famous so I tried it, since I like rojak. This is one of the few stalls that still includes kang kong, so my dad will be happy with it. However, the prawn paste sauce tastes slightly different from what I am used to. At $3 a plate, the portion is very small. And it’s not that the plate is big - the portion is reeeaaally small. There wasn’t really a queue when I was there, so it was still ok. But if there is a queue, you better order the large portion to make your time worth it!

Stall name: Lao Fu Zi Fried Kway Teow 老夫子炒粿条
Address: Old Airport Road hawker centre #01-12
Item: Char Kway Teow
Price: $5
Review: There is usually a queue for this stall so I only eat it during off-peak hours. The texture of the noodles is just right - not too sticky or oily. And there are no bits of pork lard, which is great because I really hate biting into those unsuspecting pieces of pork lard. The “hum” (cockles) are plentiful and large. But they were a little raw so I buried them under the noodles to cook them a little more before eating them. “Hum” lovers will like this. Overall, a very pleasing plate of CKT. Can’t fault it.

Stall name: Blanco Court Fresh Fish Soup
Address: Beauty World food centre, level 4
Item: Sliced fish bee hoon
Price: $5.50
Review: The fish slices were thick and plentiful, and the fish was fresh. It also came with a generous serving of greens. The soup was light and natural-tasting, and I finished every drop of it. A wholesome bowl of healthy fresh fish soup.

Stall name: Albert Street Prawn Noodle
Address: Old Airport Road hawker centre #01-10
Item: Prawn Noodle (虾面)
Price: $6
Review: It’s not easy to find good prawn noodles stalls, so if there is a famous one, I will usually try it. I always order the dry version. Prawn noodles is all about the broth, and the soup here is very thick and rich with prawn flavour. The prawns were fresh and juicy, with about three mid/large size ones. I also like the dry chilli powder, which adds an extra kick. Felt a bit cheated when I saw that there were no kang kong veggies in the actual product even though it was shown in the picture. At $6 a bowl, it is slightly pricey, but worth the money. Yums.

Stall name: Dunman Road Char Siew Wan Ton Mee
Address: Dunman Food Centre #02-19
Item: Wanton Mee
Price: $3.50
Review: Saw there was a short queue for this, so I decided to give it a try. It’s a different style from the Wanton Mee that I usually have. The noodles here are more starchy and firm, while the sauce for the noodles is rather bland. A word of caution: the chilli is super spicy! Not my favourite Wanton Mee for sure.

Stall name: Million Star Fried Banana
Address: Changi Village hawker centre #01-49
Item: Goreng Pisang
Price: $1.20 (Banana raja)
Review: This is perhaps my favourite goreng pisang stall in Singapore, but I don’t visit it often because it’s so far away. The pisang is really goreng! The crust is crispy yet not too oily, and the banana is very sweet. I wanted to try the chempedak but it was not ready. It’s hard to find a good goreng pisang stall nowadays. Hope more people will support this stall so that they can keep running.

Stall name: Mizzy Corner Nasi Lemak
Address: Changi Village hawker centre #01-26
Item: Nasi Lemak
Price: $4.50 (Set A) + $1 (begedil)
Review: This is my go-to meal whenever I visit Changi Village. They use basmati rice, which is actually not my preferred rice for Nasi lemak. The chicken wing is hit and miss - you have to be lucky to get one of the freshly fried batches, and on this occasion, it was. The chilli is more sweet than spicy. The fried egg and ikan bilis are what you expect. The begedil is nice. It’s not the best Nasi lemak but it’s good enough to make me come back each time.

Stall name: You Fu Fried Hokkien Prawn Noodle 友富福见面
Address: Golden Mile hawker centre #01-57
Item: Hokkien Mee
Price: $5 (small)
Review: This comes with more bee hoon than yellow Hokkien noodle, and I like it this way. It’s not too wet; not too dry. It also has a nice wok-hei flavour to it. The two prawns are large and the pork slices are chunky. But I think the best part has to be the chilli - spicy and tangy, especially when taken with the lime juice. Yummy.

Stall name: Chao Yuan Noodle 潮源面家
Address: S-11 coffeeshop at 711 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 8
Item: Minced meat noodle
Price: $4.80
Review: This bak chor mee is unique in that the noodles and ingredients are separated, with all the meat in the soup instead of being served together with the noodles. The noodles taste really good, springy with the right firmness. The balance of chilli and vinegar is just right, and the topping of crispy anchovies is a bonus. The minced meat is plentiful, and having the sliced lean pork and liver in the soup makes the soup tasty. Overall, I like the taste but the small portion means that you won’t be full after eating this.

Stall name: Rosy & Nora
Address: Haig Road Market & Food Centre #01-15
Item: Roti John
Price: $4.50
Review: It’s not easy to find places that sell good Roti John. I am happy to say that this is one of the good ones. The bread was freshly fried and nicely crispy. The egg was fragrant and contained the right amount of sliced onions and minced mutton. The chilli sauce was generous and not too spicy or sweet. Everything was just right. I will go back just to eat this again.

Stall name: Tian Tian Fa 天天发
Address: Hawker centre at 210 Lorong 8 Toa Payoh #01-42
Item: Char Kway Teow
Price: $4
Review: We walked past a table and saw someone eating it and it looked good, so we went to find the stall. The CKT is suitably oily, not too wet/dry/sticky, just right. I liked that they were generous with the lup cheong and bean sprouts, which were crunchy and juicy. The cockles were decent sized too. Overall, it tasted quite good, so it was worth the calories.

Stall name: Tong Fatt Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice
Address: Maxwell Food Centre #01-17
Item: Roasted chicken rice
Price: $4.50
Review: I wanted to try another chicken rice stall at Maxwell besides Tian Tian, and this stall had no queue so I gave it a try. I originally wanted to order the Hainanese chicken rice but it didn’t look too enticing, so I settled for the roasted chicken instead. The meat was quite good, nothing exceptional but not bad. The rice was better than Tian Tian’s. I liked that it was served with a bowl of soup, which was delicious and I drank it all up. I also liked that they served ginger juice as a condiment, and they allowed you to take the three sauces as you pleased. However, the chilli sauce wasn’t that great. Overall, it’s a decent plate of roasted chicken rice.

Stall name: Lakeview (Upper Thomson) Kim Goreng Pisang
Address: Maxwell Food Centre
Item: Carrot Fingers
Price: $2 (10 pcs)
Review: I love this! Not many places selling carrot sticks, so if I encounter a stall selling it, I will be sure to buy it. Compared to the dim sum-style carrot cake slice, carrot fingers are crispier because of the greater surface area to be fried. It is sinfully oily, and you have to eat it quick before the whole paper bag gets soaked with oil. Yummy!
