𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐃𝐄𝐀𝐃 𝐑𝐄𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐍 𝐓𝐎 𝐇𝐀𝐖𝐊𝐈𝐍𝐒 𝐎𝐍 𝐒𝐄𝐏𝐓𝐄𝐌𝐁𝐄𝐑 𝟏𝐒𝐓 𝐀𝐓 𝐌𝐈𝐃𝐍𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓.  everyone’s thrilled, of course; (some) their friends and family members are back, and hawkins finally looks like it’s coming back together after the earthquake of march ‘86. the little town of indiana could only be so lucky, but wishful thinking could work, right?

hawkins university sets aside dorm rooms for the returned deceased; half the town is terrified, but those people already left, so while there are weird looks at the returned - it’s nothing too out of the ordinary. life ... sort of returns to normal for a bit. some of the returned use the next two weeks to reacclimate to being alive, but also to use this time to make up for lost time. the party is reunited. the adults are back together. for awhile, everything seems oddly okay.

those who know anything about what’s really happening in hawkins’ don’t bother letting their guard down, waiting for the other shoe to drop. and it does on october 1st, a full month after the dead and experiments returning. the ground grumbles, the sky rumbles, and it pours. the last time there was a storm this bad, well, the town was split in half. 

no such thing happens. 

instead, at 2 in the morning, the hawkins’ police department receives a call. creel house is burning. no one could have seen this coming and no one’s quite sure what it means. is it perhaps, vecna is gone for good? or is he sort of ... reanimating himself even more so, planning to climb through the flame like some sort of demonic phoenix?

jim hopper is wondering what’s going to happen next. ricky kim, jane ives, & sara hopper feel something stirring underneath hawkins. the skin on the back of will byer’s neck prickles. nancy wheeler double checks to make sure the gun under her pillow is still there. chrissy cunningham & barb holland shuts their eyes and pretends like they doesn’t feel darkness in the back of their minds. erica sinclair tells her brother to look out for himself. max mayfield knows this war isn’t over. holly wheeler just wants to be able to sleep peacefully again. dustin henderson is swearing under his breath because he knows nothing good can come out of this. suzie bingham knows everyone is hiding something from her. vickie brooks is just trying to continue life as normal. mike wheeler is paging anyone he can on a walkie talkie. robin buckley is rambling off all the possibilities the fire could be. jonathan byers & steve harrington have the same goal of keeping account of everyone. cassie gillenkerk & diana alvarado? well, they just may be the only “normal” people left in town.
