A Marriage of Convenience
When Barry goes to college, his adopted father Joe can’t afford to pay for both him and Iris, but Barry has most of his inheritance left, and he says he’ll work to pay for the rest. His first year, he spends all of his free time in the library, looking for some way to prove his father’s innocence and get him out of jail.
He thinks he might finally have a chance when a man who says he’s from the Innocence Project contacts him about the case. He says he can help, but they need funds to be able to pay for experts and lawyers fees. In his excitement and desperation, Barry dips into his inheritance, and before he knows it, he’s nearly broke, his father is no closer to being free, and the man has stopped answering his calls. He contacts the Innocence Project directly, only to be told they have never heard of any Eobard Thawne.
Barry is stuck. He refuses go to Joe because he’s already done so much for him, and besides, he doesn’t want to put Iris’s future at stake because of his mistake. He applies for student loans, but since he is under 25 he’s still considered a dependant student, so would have to put Joe’s information on the form, and wouldn’t get enough to cover tuition, let alone books and rent. He tries to work as much as he can, but the book store only offers so many hours.
Desperate to make as much cash as possible, Barry ends up at Saints and Sinners begging for a job. The owner, Len, is initially going to send Barry back to the other side of the tracks where he belongs, but something about the kid makes him soften a bit and he gives him a job. Barry takes to the colourful clientele surprisingly well, but he’s still not able to save enough to pay for his next semester, and the deadline is looming. One night they are sharing a drink after closing and Barry mentions how unfair it is that if he were married he could apply for loans without Joe being involved. Len jokingly offers, then when Barry looks at him like a deer in headlights, decides to propose for real.
Barry isn’t sure what to do. Being married would enable him to get the loans he needs to continue his studies, and to keep up appearances, Len has offered his spare room as well, so Barry wouldn’t have to worry about rent. It’s a nearly perfect solution. But can he really marry a man he barely knows? Especially one who runs a bar with questionable side businesses, and who hides himself behind a cold-faced mask?
