Ang Maya (The Sparrow)
youtube
Lyrics by Severino Reyes (1861-1942) Music by Jose Estrella (1870-1943) Originally from the zarzuela Filipinas para los Filipino (1905)
Ah! Papagakpak! Ah! Mga pakpak! Kiring! Kiring! Pag napagod, pag napagod mga pakpak
Ang maya! Ang maya!
English
When the birds in the meadows fly Their wings move swiftly And once they tire, they soon alight On a tree branch, they shift around
At morning, the singing Is good to listen to At evening, they alight Uncatchable, and lively (with repetition)
When startled, they fly Flapping their wings And tweeting enticingly, enticingly When they tire, when they tire, they moan
Ah! Flapping! Ah! Their wings! Enticingly! Enticingly! When they tire, when their wings tire
The sparrow! The sparrow!
Translation Note: jesus those lyrics are lewd

Ang Aking Bayan (My Nation)
youtube
Lyrics and Music by Nicanor Abelardo (1893-1934) Composed in 1922
English
Beneath a sky where the sun shines There are birds freely humming together The flowers overwhelm in their fragrance Such is the birthplace of these people
Ah! Ah! The flowers Ah! Ah! Overwhelmingly fragrant Ah! Ah! Ah! Such is the birthplace Such is the birthplace of these people
There, no one thirsts, even for affection For sources of joy are exceedingly abundant And the ladies exceedingly modest Are wells of happiness, beauty, and sweetness Ah! Ah! Ah!
There, generosity is extended even to aliens Offering even humble, humble homes Likewise, their hearts, lives, dignity And yet what tragedy, the fate she met!
She* learned to worship and to love Blood was spilled for great adoration But the greedy race Stepped all over her dignity And her dream is of freedom
To worship and to love For great devotion But the greedy race Stepped all over her honor And her dream is of freedom
Such is my nation Abundant in riches And now only lacking Such independence!
Translator note: Tagalog pronouns are not gendered, so yeah.

Kundiman ng Langit (Heaven’s Kundiman)
youtube
Lyrics and Music by Augusto Espino (born 1957) Published in 2002
English
There is one Kundiman unique among others It flows for very long, as though it will never end Created from heaven, by a Father faithfully loving Sing the heaven’s Kundiman
The melody was written from His blood, Lyrics drawn from a heart that never resents It brings us salvation, and our liberation Listen to this Kundiman
How mystical, this love that You bring My sins, you erased truly In spite of what I did, You still loved me so much Can anything possibly exceed Your love?
I hope this serenade is answered Brought to life by the redemptive death Wounds are healed; our filth cleansed Feel this expression of adoration
Can anything possibly surpass this Kundiman?

Simbang Gabi (Night Mass)
youtube
Lyrics by an anonymous Jesuit priest (not sure; will confirm) Music by Lucio San Pedro (1913-2002) Originally for piano and four voices
Tagalog
Ikalabing-anim ng Disyembre Ding-dong! Ding dong!
English
Sixteenth of December Ding dong! Ding dong! There are lanterns now lit! And the breeze has become intensely cold It is the start of the Night Mass
Night Mass, Night Mass Is the start of Christmas!
Night Mass marks the start of Christmas Among the hearts of the Filipino blood In nine nights, we wake up To the incessant tolling of the bell
The next day, we go early Walking in bunches Greeting Godfather and Godmother “Merry Christmas!” And kissing their hands
We are all very happy With full stomachs and filled pockets We will not be able to forget The tasty rice cakes We sleep soundly Thinking of our New Year And the coming Three Kings In the Philippines, that’s still Christmas
Ding dong! Ding dong! It’s Christmas! It’s Christmas! Lanterns are now hanging! There are lights now shimmering!
It’s Christmas! It’s Christmas! Lanterns are now hanging! We can now see it in the stars: The birth of the Boy in Bethlehem
Glory, glory to God in the highest, And peace be on Earth, To the people of good will!
Translation notes
I removed some repetitions, if that’s alright with everyone.
Simbang Gabi is literally a tradition of novena masses in preparation of Christmas in the Philippines. The lyrics haven’t aged that well though -- Christmas here now start as early as September! Hence this translation existing even if Simbang Gabi is still months away.
The lyrics referenced very specific kinds of rice cakes, so I hyperlinked them for everyone’s convenience~
Please excuse my mediocre English ;n;
