Right as I walked inside the cancer center the first person I saw was a nurse. I explained to her why I was there with a tray of individually wrapped cookies: to simply brighten the day of all the patients and nurses. She was so grateful and I proceeded to walk to each of the patients’ rooms. For each patient I told them that I had two bags of cookies; one for themselves for trying to fight their illness like a champ and another bag to give to someone else that they thought were deserving. Many older men said that they would give the cookies to their wives, as they take very good care of them when they are sick. As I walked away from the rooms I could hear all the chattering from the patients talking to the nurses of how cool and thoughtful it was that I baked them cookies. The last patient that I visited stuck out to me the most. She was about my age and I explained to her that I know what it is like to sit in that chair for 3 hours going through treatment, as I get treatment here once every six weeks for my Crohn’s Disease; her eyes became big and said, “but you look so healthy and happy.” I told her that the key to happiness was through one’s mindset and outlook and I found my happiness through the gift of giving. Seeing her hopeful face light up and smile she told me that she would pay it forward. I had such a wonderful experience at Edward Hospital. The gift of giving not only made the patients and nurses feel happy and appreciated, but my heart felt even more joy than they could ever imagine, simply by giving.

After waiting for the cookies to cool off I placed two cookies each in a wrapped bag with cute ribbon! I am super excited to hand out these cookies to patients undergoing treatment for cancer and the wonderful nurses helping them. These patients undergo a lot from chemo and I am happy I can do something small to make their stressed minds feel at ease.

Tonight I picked up all of my Nestle Toll House chocolate chip cookie ingredients to bake about two dozen cookies for tomorrow morning! Around 9am I am heading to Edward Hospital located by downtown Naperville.
