pre design stages for the poster assesment.
Written concept tutorial
Ultimately I’m using this exercise and a practice for the assessment. So I wanted to get a but of a rough idea for colour and direction to use a s a reference. Ultimately, in the new year, as music opens up again, I will be redesigning my EPK to submit to magazines, promotors and artists to market myself as a available photographer for tours, promos and the like. So this piece will be less abstract, less on implication of intention, and more so a direct expression of intend regard myself and the photography services I will provide in the music scene (primarily). Dabbling in studio work with models as well, I decided to add that to the mind map, as it is also something I enjoy as a photographer, that also informs what I do in music, especially in a studio setting with promo work. My colour pallet is expressed the live images displayed on the mood board. Dark but with big beautiful coloured lights. A flowing spectrum between moody subdued colour and bright epic explosions of light behind figures.
I want to visually construct a poster/ document that serves and a digital business card, rather than a abstract poster implying intent. So, beginning with a large heading titled ‘Reverie Digital’ blending into a yet to be choses image of mine ill follow below with some information about myself, what I’ve accomplished, what I’m capable of as a photographer, my flexibility to tour and so on, along with acts I have worked with. Below this short paragraph will be a selection of my photos for sample work. A few of these I have included in my mood board. As this is a practice for a piece that will be a depiction of intention of my career following this course, I figured it a good idea to use it in both a practice and practical stance, turning an assessment into something I intend on taking with me after I finish this course.

Colour theory! I Infinitely prefer black and grey art. But this was a fun exercise learning the ins and outs of colour.

Gestalt theory practice. It was a fun little challenging coming up with something applicable to each point

M.C Escher research and practice. This by no means my usual style and frankly I hate everything about it. But I learnt some new tricks regarding shape correlation and it's always good for practicing colour theory.

Post card design process, including some messy thought processes. Everytime I plan like this I end up with something that very accurately depicts what my actual though process looks like 😅

WIPs for the three tarot card artworks. As you can see there was some scrapping of ideas in the beginning stages of planning

For this assessment i chose to create three pieces using Procreate that reflect the state of the world we are living in. Love, Death and Heart. heart, being the first piece, is a three of swords tarot card. the three of swords means heartbreak, difficulty, deep hurt and disappointment, as the imagery is a heart being pierced by three sharp blades. with not only a global pandemic, but Australia also being in a recession as of today, i felt creating a series of tarot cards to relate to the current state of things was a way i could portray a bit of a story that many, including myself have experienced this year. for me, this piece was inspired but the fist lock down. a period that was filled with incredible heartache and struggle. dramatic loss of work, being separated from not only friends and family, but also my then-long distance partner who lived in a separate state. loosing friends to horrific tragedy and the subsequent mental health breakdown both my partner and i experienced in the aftermath, all the while unable to be together. the second piece is Death. a card that, despite its ominous appearance, means change and new opportunity. the end of a chapter in life, and the beginning of a new. this piece i drew from the more positive points of this year. although there has been an incredible amount of pain and difficulty in so many facets of life, there has also been an equal amount of good in turn. with loss of work came time to think about the direction i wanted my life to go, which lead to studying digital design and seeing a new career path to pursue as the world returns to normal. Along with a brighter career perspective, when Victorian restrictions increased and the boarder closure was announced, my partner and i decided to fast track future moving plans. so rather than months to finalise moving arrangements, my incredible partner up-heaved his entire life and had hopped on one of the last few flights available to Melbourne, only 12 hours after the boarder closure was announced. being locked away from each other indefinitely, had become a thing of the past. i chose to change up the usual death card design a bit with a plague doctor mask, as all of the change this year came with the pandemic impact. as well as giving the reaper a female figure with a mother Mary gesture, implying mercy and hope, emerging the darkness, being the fog. the final piece is the lovers. representing relationships and choices. when presented with the huge hurdle of being locked away from each other for an undisclosed time, while we were both going through significant mental health struggles after the loss of our friends, we chose to take a leap of faith together and move across states in a matter of hours. i wanted to make this piece a bit softer in imagery. the broken legs of the two skeletons represents the condition of mental health we were both in at the time. but i wanted to convey with the embrace of the two characters that despite the poor footing, despite the pain and difficulties, we would carry each other through. i decided the tuck the two skeletons into a flower wrapped coffin to represent a soft safe space. a place to heal together. these pieces sit very close to my heart, and im extremely proud of how they came along. in the mock up/template pages, you will see that i had i different idea for death originally. i changed my mind to something more personal, because i felt that it would be the best way to really bring the best out of my self. i dont tend to plan too much for bigger artworks, especially when they are close to my heart. quite often when i feel inspired, ill just start drawing and let my creativity flow where it will. so stopping to take wips felt quite odd. but its nice to look back and see who an artwork progressed and see what my brain was doing as ideas developed and changed. i hope you enjoy looking at these pieces as much as i enjoyed creating them.

Tutorial 2: Basic Shapes This tutorial was a fun bit of practice at shading and form. Being that a more realism approach is what my personal style consists of, shading and creating form and depth in a shape is something I’ve always done while drawing. A few of the images were very out of my usual comfort zone though. Cars are one thing i can confidently say I’ve never really dabbled in as i find them a bit boring. The lion was a challenge too. Although i love animals, they haven't been something I’ve spent much time drawing. That being said, they are certainly something i wish to improve upon!

Tutorial 1: Styles. After finishing the full page of smaller drawings, i quickly found i was quite out of practice with portrait work. Feeling that working on a smaller scale was rather limiting the detail could include and was feeling rather cramped. So i switched to a full page approach for the Van Gogh and personal style pieces and found it to be far more comfortable. This was a fun lesson to work through. I rather surprised myself when i found how enjoyable working in a Disney style was. Disney isn't something I’ve ever paid much attention to beyond the few films i grew up with as a kid. its very far removed from what i usually find visually interesting, and not something i thought id ever gravitate towards at all. But surprise, it was my favourite piece to do, aside from the beginnings of the self portrait in my own style. As you can see the piece in my own style is unfinished. Something that has been deeply reaffirmed during this tutorial, is how tedious i find drawing curly hair. It’s something I’m still finding my way around, especially in my own preferred style of realism. Learning how to create the implication of curls, rather than drawing every single curl in realism is something I’m still yet to get around.

For this assessment, I put together a debut album poster in the form of an AU tour flyer, including dates in real Australian venues across the country. I had quite a bit of fun creating this piece, as the Australian heavy music scene feels like a second home to me. Its where I've met all those closest to me, including my partner, as well as being where my love for photography really blossomed. 'Lune' being the fictional band I created are a blackened orchestral death project. so I wanted to combine both softer flowing visuals with some harsh 'lo-fi' looking textures to encapsulate how their sound would feel. the logo and aesthetic its self was inspired by two artists I was listening to while creating this piece. Alcest, a post-black metal french band. And Mgła, a polish black metal band. (if you're up for some interesting music to get a full picture of the musical-visual picture I'm going for, id suggests investigating each artist's most recent albums!) currently, I still find myself struggling with Photoshop, and found the double exposure exercise particularly difficult to grasp. however, some more practice will remedy that! overall, despite the difficult circumstances surrounding my completion of the piece, I'm quite happy with the outcome and feel it would very much fit into the collection of posters from shows I've photographed attended over the last few years.

the remain images for the tutorials assessment submission! All images except for the background texture for the flame text tutorial are original images I have taken myself. I'm not entirely happy with the final pieces I've submitted. Digital images beyond photography and basic image editing are still very new to me. However, I did rather enjoy this module and feel I have learned a lot about what I can do with my photography in terms of image manipulation going forward. Similar to the last assessment, I feel I have a long way to go with layer naming and organisation, finding i am still becoming lost and confused in my work. Traditional art is still my primary medium and I'm yet to fully adjust having to strictly adhere to specific workflow and organisation, rather than working on any area of a piece I like, whenever I like. Fair to say I'm quite excited about the Creative Drawing module ahead.
