i know that "unalive" is part of larger worrying trend of self censorship but if you really are in a situtation where you have to avoid the words "die" or "kill" the english language already has centuries worth of much better euphemisms. the iconic and perennial "six feet under"? the lovely imagery of "pushing up daisies"? "shuffle off this mortal coil"????? literally anything from the monty python dead parrot bit???? you have so many options. please try to be more creative at least

when I see something dated 2019 I think “oh that’s not too long ago” and then I remember that 2019 was not only five years ago but those five years have somehow contained several lifetimes

A lot of people talk about the "mario timeline" i.e. placing games in chronological order, which is respectable, but currently i am thinking about how long in-universe 1 mario game is. How long is a level? You could probably bang out at least a couple smb3 levels in a day (if you were mario), but something like pendulum castle is likely an all-day affair. This is also not accounting for the times that mario has an offscreen picnic between levels, or takes a nap in a picturesque field. Food for thought.

the way people are still trying to call 'chat' a pronoun months later.....

i have to wonder if it's a case of a lot of people internalizing (correctly!) that following grammar rules is not the end-all-be-all, that prescriptivism is BS, etc, and then extrapolating off that to conclude (incorrectly!) that if language is ~fake~, then all descriptive terminology for grammar/linguistics just Doesnt Mean Anything.

When people get a little too gung-ho about-

ok, yes. gōnghé, which is…an abbreviation for “industrial cooperative”? Like it was just a term for a worker-run organization? A specific U.S. marine stationed in China interpreted it as a motivational slogan about teamwork, and as a commander he got his whole battalion using it, and other U.S. marines found those guys so exhausting that it migrated into English slang with the meaning “overly enthusiastic”.

That’s…wild. What was I talking about?

Technophobes need to apologise for "just put it in plain English you stupid machine!" because, well for one the decline in accurate error messages in favour of simplicity has contributed to the rise of tech illiteracy, but also because now whenever an "app" has a net connection error it will pop up a box saying something like "oo ooopsie! Your super duper feed went poo poo. We'll try again soon!" which having said to me by a corporation is about 8 million times worse than having to hear the word "network".

It’s funny when American authors come up with a new European nation so their main character can be a secret royal without the pain of researching a real nation. We should all start doing that with North America, just make up a new state. My protagonist lives in New Utahioshington which is the 51st state and located between Delaware and Maryland
