Dude, the @hboww2rewatch is going to be soooo good.
The Pacific really just throws us into the war the same way it throws these men into it - we don't get H company at bootcamp, or how JP and Manny and John became friends. We're just - there. It's Guadalcanal, and it's awful, and mind-boggling to Leckie in its awfulness. You don't get to pick your wars, and here we are, in the middle of the Pacific, on islands your family can't find on a map, and there's no water and you've got jungle sores, and your mom is writing to ask if you want your dress blues.
One of the things I'm appreciating, watching in this order, is just how much this show anchors us in their families - our three main leads all start at home. (And how much I dislike Leckie's dad!!!!)
We also get a staggering sense of how much they don't know. "Professor Leckie, enlighten us." And Leckie gives a flippant answer, a line of poetry from Alexander Pope's translation of the Iliad - Without a sign his sword the brave man draws, And asks no omen but his country's cause.
One wonders if he's thinking about those words and his country's cause as he shoots the soldier trying to cross the river. That man, too, had a cause and a country. What makes one better or worse? The poets didn't tell him it would be like this.
We also get a sense, so quickly, of how the war becomes who you're with, where you are, right now, to the exclusion of everything else. H Company watches the naval battle in the distance, and then learns, the next morning, that Admiral Turner and the Navy have all left. Their war has just become very, very small.
And by the end of the episode, where they're all reading letters from home, you (and Leckie) realize just how far away from home they really are. Dress blues. Birthdays. Incredible.

love doing rewatches of shows that're one step shy of being historical biopics because it makes me feel like I'm in a timeloop.
yes, we're back at the beginning. say good bye to your friend, your father, your family. you're not going to see any of them again as you are. this war is going to strip you of your identity. this has happened before, in ww1, and it has happened before because this is a retelling, and it has happened before because I have seen it all unfold nearly 10 times on my laptop screen.
there is no changing the outcome. you were and are doomed from the beginning.
let's go again.

Just watched the "I wish we were going together" scene in episode 1 of the Pacific and while that line murders me and throws me into a cave never to be found, let's all not forget to stare into the abyss about "oh, you don't have to worry about me".
Oh, you don't have to worry about me. The forced bravado of a seventeen-year-old boy who can't make the smile reach all the way to his eyes because when he enlisted he figured there was no way he was going anywhere without Eugene (he's never been anywhere without Eugene) and the closer he gets to leaving, the realer this all feels and the bigger that pit in his stomach gets.
And that 6AM train is coming real fast.

Update: I’ve already queued posts for each day of the show, with a graphic that says PST. I didn’t save psds for those graphics and am unable to go back to edit them. The graphics will remain saying PST.
PDT and PST are both the correct area no matter what cause it’s Pacific Time, but if anyone is concerned about having the right time, please use the “what time is this for you?” Link that is and will continue to be linked in each post about the schedule.
hi there, was just wondering, shouldn't the timezone in the post be PDT not PST?
or am i mistaken here?
no, you’re right - it’s PDT. Sorry, I never use the daylight abbreviation 😬. I’ll fix the post. Thanks!

Where will the episodes be liveblogged?
Hi! Currently we are planning on liveblogging on tumblr by using #hboww2rewatch and with everyone starting the episode on their own device. Hopefully by planning on a 6:30pm PCT watch it'll keep most of us synced during the episode.
The mods are most likely be liveblogging from our own blogs, but we'll definitely be reblogging some posts on here!
