@historicn // they’d been walking around the house overly dramatic for the past few weeks, knowing that classes were starting back soon and that meant less time with rory around the house. while they loved and supported their husband in everything, sometimes amara wanted to be a little selfish and tell him to stay home and they would take care of them. unrealistic dreams, but a dream nonetheless. “do you have to?” the same question every year, amara just didn’t want to see him go off to class and leave them alone ( grateful they worked dayshift now instead of nights, at least the two were able to have nights together now ). they ask every time, knowing full well the answer to the question each time.

“I love pumpkin as much as the next person and I do get hyped for PSL season, but isn’t this an overkill?” Nicola asked, making a face as she held up an orange pumpkin-scented paper napkin.

a sheepish grin from them, amara guilty about actually liking the idea of the scented napkins. “i thought it was really clever,” they admit with a shrug before looking around. “but fall has always been my favorite time of the year, it just means beautiful colors and great smells.” another look at the napkin and they stuff a few into the breast pocket in their scrub top. “one of the kids loves the smell but can’t have food so i bring a ton for her to scatter around her room- helps cut the antiseptic smell at least.”

“It’s not that difficult- just another mile. Come on.” Kate urged the other, stopping for a quick break as she waited for them to catch up to her. “Finish this, and we’ll get donuts.”

amara shook their head before holding out a pinky in a form of childish promise. “i’m holding you to this officer. you did not say anything about torture when you brought up the idea of helping me get back into shape.” a playful glare from them before laughter, clearly no hard feelings at all toward the police woman. amara liked kate, they’d run into each other a few times from work crossing over and that was great with the nurse because they loved seeing familiar faces around.

“Don’t get me wrong, the whole scooter thing could help people get around places better than the bus or the subway, obviously way better than an Uber considering how terrible traffic is around here – but those things are dangerous as hell and people don’t even follow the laws that come with it. We’ve seen so many cases of broken bones in the ER because of them.”

amara snapped their fingers and pointed at him excitedly, almost jumping up and down a few times. “i thought i knew your face!” glad to finally figure out why the other was familiar, the nurse laughed and shook her head. “we work together. i’m a pediatric nurse, up on floor three. name’s amara.” admitted they weren’t pulled to the er much ( only when a small child was involved ) so they didn’t have real clout to add to the topic at hand. “anything is dangerous really. walking outside my house today was dangerous. some things are just more so than others.”

It was a slow day at her bookstore and Tess wasn’t having it. Especially with this on and off again heat wave that’s been happening in the city. Restocking the books like she does everyday, Tess heard the doorbell ring and saw a costumer standing there “Welcome to Freeman’s Books, we have a little bit of everything from Shakespeare to Nichols Sparks from old to new. What kind I help you with?” She questioned and then patted her hands on her pants, while putting the dusty box down on the floor and looked up to help.

they were hoping to slip into the store unnoticed, able to grab what was needed and pay without much of an interaction with anyone. the worker of course was not going to let that plan follow through, calling out to amara with glee that a customer was in store. startled, the other stood in the doorway shocked for a moment before finally gathering what wits were left and barely stammering out their reply. “children’s books.” if rory found out what was happening, they might get another lecture on spending too much money on children that didn’t belong to them. “for ages five to ten, if possible.” there was some bored and lonely kids, so she was hoping that some books might make treatments better.
