To the non-maikos it’s always: mai and zuko boring. mai and zuko no passion. maiko only based on logistics. people only like maiko bc it’s canon.

To me it’s: mai and zuko share a cultural background which helps them empathize with each other. mai and zuko have a deep understanding about how the other was raised. mai and zuko take comfort in each other because of that. mai and zuko fit like puzzle pieces. mai calm and is his peace. zuko passionate and brings out her inner fire. mai and zuko are each others safe spaces. mai and zuko both made mistakes during the war and need to grow from it. mai and zuko have Fire nation roots and therefore have experiences that help them envision a better nation. mai and zuko team.

izumi probably guilt-tripped zuko into getting things her way by starting to fake cry and mai just looks at zuko disappointedly as izumi sit in his lap enjoying her third serving of chocolate, the wall around them scribbled with crayons

i hc zuko (post breakup) would show up mura's flower shop every single day for flowers. the number of flowers the fire lord bought each day increased as days went by which led mura's flower shop to recieve a huge commison and the palace's book-keeping staff to wonder where all the money keeps going.

Mai hates to see the firelord coming to buy yet again a bouquet of flowers, of course she will steal a few glances at him while he plays with tom-tom or lean on the counter waiting for his order.

so till the day mai finally agreed and when on a date with him after his 3 year journey to the flower shop and buying countless flowers, the palace was filled with flowers, a bouquet of each vase and some to hang while other in every room of the palace.

+zuko begged asked mai to finally go on a date with him cuz the flowers caused him to develop a pollen allergy,

I wad wondering, what if Izumi grow up being a prodigy like Azula? How would Zuko and Mai react?

so like mai wouldnt really make a big deal out of it, she would be supportive and taking this normally, however, I think zuko would take this very nervously considering what happened to azula and how the power got to her head driving her to insanity.

If izumi started firebending and someone remarked that she was 'indeed a prodigy' I imagine zuko absolutely going thru internal war. 'no izumi is a sweet child, she wouldnt become her' while another saying 'but azula was also sweet, what if I mess up and drive her to be an azula?".

such thoughts would drive him for a long time, unintentionally ignoring mai and izumi in the process. Of course, mai would swoop in and smack some sense into him (Jk)

I imagine them going thru a long talk in their bed on how izumi wouldnt become an azula and they are better parents than the ones azula had.

+a part of mai would also be scared about the possibility of her sweet child ending up like azula

ATLA - Head cannon

Zuko loves when Kiyi calls him "Zuzu" cause it reminds him of Azula. She's like a non-crazy and innocent version of Azula, and a way to cope with the feeling of losing Azula. He even sometimes catches himself almost calling her "Azula." And often compares their mannerisms, hoping to find a piece of Azula he can hold onto.

Who realized that Izumi had vision problems and needed glasses: Zuko or Mai? and at what age do you think it happened?

I like to think it was mai, because Izumi often tagged along on her firelady duties due to mai and zuko insisting on raising her without Nannies. Izumi would climb into Mai’s lap and help her with such duties, (Izumi was very bright, more than her parents at that age)

I think she would be like 9-10, she was helping mai by dictating the word on the document when she struggled to read a word. Mai brushed it off as something of a struggle to read,but the stuttering and misreading got worse, so they got her checked out and boom glasses.
