an excerpt to my gabiyui modern au yakuza fic that I am finishing as of late

Yui thought at first she would be the first one to confess her true feelings for Gabimaru, only for him to exceed her expectations, feeling his hand on her wrist as he owned that precious moment.

It was a normal day in middle school, and Yui, despite her desire to make him fall for her, didn't want to face her feelings and confess to him. She couldn't, despite the fact that he was engaged to her, since all she had known was Gabimaru only meant business and there might come a time when he would meet someone else whom he would want to marry for love.

It wouldn't be me, she thought, and it made her cry secretly for days.

So when she noticed Gabimaru getting a lot closer than usual, to the point of saving her from getting hit by a ball during PE, or always accompanying her even though he had plenty of things to do with his own time, she knew she had to draw a line and stop herself from getting all these butterflies and wishful thinking.

"You can go and do whatever you want, you know," she informed him while they were having lunch at the school rooftop.

That made him stop eating, confused by her statement. "But I want to be with you," he stated, pausing from eating his riceball. "Do you want me to go somewhere else?"

Yui blushed at his statement, thinking of the right words to say because Gabimaru sounded like he was also in love with her. Then she shakes her head. No, no. Don't feed your delusions. He is not in love with you. This is an arranged marriage. He is just following orders.

"It's okay. Just do whatever you want."

But please don't make me hope for more because my heart won't be able to take it.

"Yui..." Gabimaru hesitated. He had been thinking about this for so long, and it might hurt him, but then again... "I didn't mean to pry, but do you have a crush on someone?"

When Gabimaru looked up to her, he couldn't believe her reaction—a furious blush on her face and wide hazel eyes as her mouth stammered for the right answer. She felt shy under his gaze, constantly looking away to hide her face so he couldn't dig deeper.

He didn't like that look to be seen by someone else, and he still thinks up to that day that there was someone else in her mind. For the first time, he willed himself to be calm, and rational, and think things through. Who was the guy anyway? Does she like him because he's a lot taller and nicer?

But I'm also nice to her, he added to protect his pride.

"Yui."

"W-What?"

"I don't like the way you're looking at me like that."

Now there went her hopes and dreams.

"W-Why?"

He sighed and looked straight at her. "Because I like you."

Now that sealed everything. Yui thought he wouldn't feel the same way given the nature of their engagement, yet here he was, boldly confessing how much he liked her. But since when? How did he like me? What did he see in me? There were so many questions, and all Yui wanted to do was hide in embarrassment, feeling the skin of Gabimaru's fingertips beside hers on the cold ground.

"G-Gabi—"

"Saku." Gabimaru wanted her to call him by his real name. "I thought I told you to call me that."

But she couldn't, not when he's just inches closer to making her heart melt. 

"Yui."

"I'm going to touch you. If you don't like me, you can stay away."

That's when Yui had her resolve, finally looking at him directly.

"What makes you think I would do that? I have been feeling the same ever since we got to know each other!"

That was his cue to hold onto her.

in comes hajime.

hajime looks upon this monster and sees herself. sees everyone. sees katze for what he is.

hajime is everything that was "good" in the 2010s---she's using social media to organize nonprofits, she's fighting for other people sake, she offers help, she's individualistic and herself, and she's so fucking hungry too----she's not satisfied either, once she thinks about it.

so she looks at this alien and communicates with him the way he does to others.

so she cuts katze's hair (violence) and looks him in the eye (bearing your soul) and kisses him (takes what she wants)

hajime ichinose does not ask for a redemption arc for katze. . she simply embraces him and brings him into her own soul.

she loves him, and he doesn't understand love, and maybe just maybe they can make each other satiated. one being becomes two, two becomes one, and even if people don't understand, they can be beloved too.
