gen. by the time you read this , i'll be long gone from here , and buck will likely be losing his mind with worry over me. he always did . . . i guess we both always worried ourselves sick over one another. even writing this i'm going to be worried about him. about chimney.

just sitting here thinking about the buckley kids and the relationship with their parents. the way they toss the responsibility of being easy kids , like that was somehow their job. all they ever had was each other and it shows. their parents did give up on them , but maddie and buck never gave up on eachother.

the buckley children were always special , and not just in the whole "our kids are special" kind of way. each of them were born with a mutant gene , something that wouldn't trigger until a certain moment for each of them. for daniel , sadly he would die before that moment could happen for him. for maddie it would be during a fight for her life.

when doug found her , and maddie went missing , she escaped , and doug pursued her. she fought as hard as she could , and right near the end her gene triggered. while her brother buck ( associated with walkedfire's verse ) has abilities surround fire , her affinity manifested in ice / water.

she didn't tell anyone what happened , that the snow and cold weather of the mountains helped her , making her stronger than doug , and protected her from obtaining hypothermia. she kept her abilities a secret , until such a time that buck would gain his and she wouldn't feel alone anymore.

she can manipulate water / ice , though she's still working on using it in any form of combat. she's always hydrating , and when it's hotter out she needs a source of water , or some form to cool off ( though she does stay in la ) and continues working for the dispatch center , while also helping people who are like she was. scared and defenseless.

closed starter : evan buckley ( walkedfire ) CW: RECOUNTS OF DOMESTIC ABUSE AHEAD.

she should have gone with evan when he had offered. when she gave him the literal keys to his freedom , it should have been the keys to theirs. buck had a real chance at a happy life. she had wanted so badly to be a part of that . . . but evan was so much better at walking away , at walking into the great unknown with eagerness. maddie couldn't do it. when it came time to leave , she said instead said goodbye to evan , and the chance she had to get out.

at first , she suffered it like the martyr she was. she smiled when she needed to , and she cried when absolutely nobody could see or hear her. she dreamed about what it could have been like if she had just been strong enough to walk away. but with each passing noise complaint , with every cop literally begging her to do the smart thing , she smiled and bid them a good night.

then it got bad.

which was saying something considering the nightmare she had been living , but refused to tell anyone. to drag anyone into the dark depths of her life. doug made it clear what would happen if she tried to get away from him , and for a while . . . it was enough to bring back that paralyzing fear. she wanted out , but she didn't know how.

maddie had been keeping tabs on buck as best as she could. she knew he had joined the navy seals , and left the jeep with a friend. it took work , and she constantly feared she'd get caught , but her hard work paid off when she tracked buck to a ranch he was working at. she cleared out her savings , she got on a bus , a few years too late. but she was done being afraid to run.

the ranch was nice , and she was welcomed warmly enough by the people she had managed to get in contact with , and waiting by the porch , she ringed her hands together , tapping her foot nervously. her wrist still hurt from where doug had grabbed her the last time they spoke , and her split lip was almost healed , but the smallest mark still remained , and some bruising nearly gone. when he came into view , any negative feelings she felt flew away , her smile showing that enough.

that was something she had heard before. from chimney , from buck , she could see how much they wanted it to be true. how much they believed it to be true. and doug was gone. he was never coming back , all thanks to maddie herself. but it didn't stop her from looking over her shoulder , or keep her from losing sleep at night over all the ways that she could remember the hell that she had been through.

could they really make those promises to her. it hadn't mattered before. how was it supposed to matter now?

hearing those words . . . she wants to believe them. she wants to believe in the intensity that buck spoke in. she believed in him. more than anything else , buck had always been the one person she could count on. and when she thought it was all over for her , he was there to wrap her up so she was safe.

that there , that was the moment that she chose to hang onto , with a vice grip so she would never let go. she nodded , but her resolve only lasted so long , before her lip was quivering , and tears were welling in her eyes. she broke , that dam she used to hold herself together coming down , as she leaned over and into buck's side. "i know . . . it never seems to stop everything from lingering around." more than anything she wanted doug to just fade away from her memory.
