the words linger in the air , curling like smoke , light and hazy , swirling between them . for a moment , kiara wonders if they’re just an illusion , if it’s the thick cloud of smoke wrapping around them , clouding her mind . but no —- these words are real , settling into the quiet like an unspoken truth . her gaze meets jj’s , holds for a beat longer than it should , before her lips pull into a smile —- soft , but steady , the kind of smile that says more than words ever could . “ you don't have to be . ” she says , her voice low , a quiet strength woven through each syllable . it’s a promise , simple yet unbreakable . because she’s here , always here . never leaving . she won’t let him face the world alone , not tonight , not ever . ( she will not let him be alone . never . )

“ i know . ” it’s simple , almost too simple , but the weight behind those words says everything . kiara’s not just saying it —- she means it . she’s known him too long , seen the good and the bad , the cracks he tries to hide . “ but i’m not letting you do this alone . no chance . ” her voice is steady , but there’s heat in her words now , frustration mixing with the fear she won’t name . because she’s tired —- tired of the way he shrugs off the danger , tired of pretending she’s fine with watching him get hurt , tired of him acting like none of it matters . it matters to her . ( he matters to her . ) and she’s not about to let him forget it .

" fuck — I didn't mean it like that okay. " the words spilled out in a rush, hands moving to run adjust his hat as a sharp exhale escaped his lips. he wasn’t good at this, at apologizing, fixing things , or even just keeping up with them when they started to unravel in a way he didn't expect. “ I just — ” he trailed off, eyes darting around like they might find better words to land on if he kept looking around. " I just don't want you to get like hurt or some shit alright ? " words admitted, voice dropping. the irritation in his tone was gone, replaced with something a bit softer. he shifted his weight clearly trying to find some sense of comfortability in a situation that he was out of his element in.

kiara , a bold smile dancing on her lips , raises an eyebrow , her eyes sparkling with quiet mischief as she fixes her gaze on the buoy in the distance . she leans slightly forward , her body brimming with energy , arms crossed over her chest , like she’s daring the ocean to stop her . “ maybe i should let you take the lead . ” she says , her voice thick with a playful edge . “ so you’re not too wiped out by the time we get there . ” a light laugh escapes her , but there’s something deeper in her tone , like a promise to never follow a path that’s already been set . “ you know , i’ve never been much of a rule follower . ” she straightens up , taking a f ew steps back , then throws a final glance toward the horizon . “ come on , hope you haven’t forgotten how to swim . ” she winks at sarah , a flicker of challenge in her eyes , like every word is a new wave ready to crash . no way is she going to let herself fall behind , even with a risky dare like this .

" I guess — I could beat you to the buoy and back. " words mused, challenging as her gaze landed on the floaty out in the distance. hands planted firmly on her hips as she gave a shrug. waves lapping lazily against the shore in front of her. it might have been the beer she had just finished talking, but the girl was entirely confident in herself. " it's not that far — but if you're scared, it's a little dark, I get it. " the words dripped in a playful sarcasm as she spoke, hues sparkling with the challenge she was laying out before the two of them. was it exactly the safest plan ? no, but when had they ever gone that route anyways ?

the call drifts into silence , swallowed by the void . the tenth attempt , her heart syncing with the faint echo of the voicemail . anxiety stirs within her as her fingers graze the edge of her scalp , a quiet plea forming in her mind , hoping for [ the reader ] to answer . she won't relent , dialing once more , an eleventh time , with no intention of stopping .
