i know some people frown on making original characters for fics in established canons but the ones you’ve made in alaib feel like they fit so naturally into collins’ universe that i couldn’t complain (even if i wanted to)! what’s your secret!!

this was a really tough question!!! my process in making ocs for alaib was different than ocs i've made for old roleplays, so i'm gonna guess that has something to do with it. usually, i would have a little form that i'd fill out with basic info on major ocs (name, age, gender, appearance, personality, and so on), which would then inform how i went about writing them moving forward.

for alaib, i focused more on creating my reference doc, laying out canon info i pulled from the books and places where i filled in the gaps. key points i knew i needed to hit. and during that process, i thought about specific people we didn't get to meet in the books (like johanna's loved ones). in most cases i made a mental note of the kind of people they would be (just general ideas about how they would interact with jo), and i gave them names:

as i got a better idea of the circumstances i'd be putting these characters into, i thought about what would make them have the most interesting or impactful effect on the narrative, and i adjusted their personalities (or the circumstances themselves) accordingly. like aaron ended up becoming an athlete so he would work well with lenore, and johanna's first tribute "aspen" (later bernice) was strategy-minded like jo herself, so jo would get invested in mentoring.

later on i made spreadsheets and a whole wiki to help me keep character info straight as well.

tldr:

i thought about what kind of people the story needed, and i brainstormed them

i kept myself open to revising characters if/when it became relevant

i kept in mind what impact i wanted them to have on the narrative, on relationships between characters, and on johanna herself

i got organized

what is the biggest difference (for you) between a one shot and a long chaptered fic?

oneshots are easier!!! it's hard for me to stay focused and sustain my momentum on a long, chaptered work, but with oneshots i can usually get it done in one go. or i'll have the bones of a decent wip sitting in storage and i can go in and work on it when i feel like it. there isn't the same pressure i put on myself for a chaptered fic

i lack the discipline to write an actual novel, but i've been sitting on a collection of short stories i wrote for my college thesis. not sure i wanna go to the trouble of trademarking a pen name and whatever else if there's no interest though.

with that in mind... if you've read any of my writing, would you want to read my original works if i tried self-publishing? and please be honest

due to tumblr's plans to partner with ai developers, i will not be posting my art or writing-- both fiction and meta-- to tumblr anymore.

on tumblr, i will still share:

general progress updates

posts that remind me of my fics

links to new chapters

post-chapter supplemental material (ex: rambling about my process, sources, or interesting bits from my research)

links to posts on my other socials. ie...

photos i used as inspiration for outfits, environments, etc. will go on pillowfort (specifically a secondary profile i created a while back: alaibfic). if there's only a couple photos relevant to a given chapter, i'll link directly to the images in the end notes on ao3.

my fanfiction has always been posted on ao3 so nothing's changing there. there's a lot of old stuff on this blog that i wrote based on asks people sent me in the h^3 era, but i won't bother taking those down bc i don't care as much. like they're old and bad lol.

i've tended to post meta stuff on my main blog though, so i'll be moving my dedicated metas onto ao3, locking reblogs where possible, and updating the original posts with the links.

tldr; i do not fuck with ai.

a friend of mine sent me an idea for a oneshot crackfic completely unrelated to any of my ongoing projects, so i've been motivated to work on that for the time being. not having to take my writing so seriously might bode well for ending my writing block, so i hope to resume work on alaib soon!
