“Are you sure, Ms. Kamski? You’re voice indicates you think other wise.” He wasn’t worried, because he had no real reason other wise, though he spoke with a concerned voice. Markus was about to be sent to his first and only owner, but it seems there was a complication in his final check. “Is there anything I might be able to assist you with?”
Kamski was finally setting everything into motion. Clearly Markus had no idea of what she had truly created him for, or what he would become once deviant. And he couldn’t know. He may have been designed for a specific purpose, but once deviant he still had to come to that purpose on his own terms, or else it would just be another order that he wouldn’t want to obey once he didn’t have to anymore.
“The only thing my voice may be indicating is a sense of being overwhelmed.” she told him. “Besides Chloe, you are the only other successfully working android I’ve created with my own two hands, and you are my newest model, a prototype, a one of a kind custom model. You seem to be everything I could’ve hoped for. Perhaps more.” she murmured. “The last thing I ask of you is a conversation.”
Tumblr media
“Tell me; what do you think so far? In general. Of being created, of life, of me?”

Chloe – the original. The first android to pass the Turing test under Elijah Kamski’s tutelage. Connor feels awkward standing before her, not quite knowing what to say, until he just comes out with the first thing on his mind. “I would never have shot you.”
Tumblr media
Connor, to her anyway, always seemed like someone who was sweet, kind.  She smiled in response. “I didn’t think you would. Neither did Elijah. It’s why I trusted him, and you. And you made the choice that we thought you would.”

Hank was at Kamski's because Elena wanted to do stuff with him. He wasn't sure why. He was just glad to spend time with her.
“Hank,” she murmured softly, going through her phone as she approached him. “I got curious and so I’ve been wondering about your voice settings. I’ve only ever heard you in American English.”

Markus looked away for a second, “A lot of things if you would like me to be honest with you.” He sighed and crossed his arms, “Fear, the fear of ruining what my people are fighting for.”
The RK800 watched Markus with curiosity. Seeing him in person like this, rather than trying to hunt him down and kill him, was enlightening.
“I wish others could see what you’re really like.” Corinne spoke softly. “I see someone who deeply cares about the people under his protection. I see a thoughtful leader, who wants so desperately to do the right thing.”

“How?”  Connor had hoped it wasn’t obvious that he was no longer a machine, after all he may have come deviant and joined them but knowing he was a deviant was scary, but it had comforted him to know that this was what Kamski had intended all along.
“Is it just through the trackers she can tell?  Or does she have other ways of knowing?”  He was curious about this.  Connor had never considered that maybe the trackers were still working but just not connected to Cyberlife’s servers.  It seemed that Kamski had thought of everything.  He didn’t mind if Kamski could tell but if others could it might interfere with his plan.  “She has a lot of secrets, it seems sad that she feels the need to be so guarded, but it’s understandable.”
Pausing for a moment before going back through he wondered if there was anything more that Chloe might decide to tell him.
Kamski, after finishing her conversation with Markus, followed Connor and Chloe. The police may have destroyed her lab, but thankfully her private server was active on her phone as well. She glanced at Chloe, before focusing on Connor.
“Earlier, Chloe was a fountain of secrets, pouring them all out. How much else has she shared in this little hiding place of yours?” Kamski asked curiously.

Kuze chuckled at her words, glancing up at her with a gentle smile. “I do remember her name was Motoko. She was kind and caring but there was a fire to her that made sure no one messed with her. She could kill a man if she needed to.” Kuze said, flashes of memories of Motoko in his arms glazing over his eyes. “You ever been in love, Elena?”
Tumblr media
“Romance?” A slight smirk crossed Elena’s features, and she shook her head. “No. I’ve never had time for things like love and romance. I’ve always been focused, whether it be on my studies, my ideas, my ambitions, my plans... I’ve never been afforded the luxury of love.”

Connor frowned, looking at her and feeling… something. Frustrated perhaps, that his questions had no answers. Or at least none that he was getting. Connor felt Kamski had no interest in what freewill she gave or took, just in infuriating the rest of the androids…
Chloe’s voice surprised him, and the android looked to the other, head tipping. Considering. But then shaking his head.
“I am not here to cause her pain, that will not be who I am anymore..” he said softly before looking to Kamski. “But you should talk. You should tell us if you have any love for your creations.”
“I have love for my creations. But it’s not about that. There is more to this than you might understand.” Kamski argued. “I do want you to succeed. There. Is that enough for you?”
Tumblr media
“I want Jericho to win. I want androids to be free. “Why” is complicated.”

northofjericho:
“Heroes only exist in stories humans tell themselves to make the world seem less dark.” North refuted. She didn’t believe in saviours or white knights - even Markus wasn’t a hero in her eyes. He was capable, and strong, and a good and beloved leader, but he was an android the same as the rest of them. He could be hurt, he could be taken down, and - in her mind, at least - his decisions could be flawed.
The story she told though - a human risking their life and freedom for a deviant, their creator putting herself at risk for one of them - gave North pause. She heard a handful of similar stories, of androids who reached Jericho with the aid of humans smuggling or disguising them. But she had yet to see it with her own eyes and some things were just too difficult for her to believe without witnessing it first hand.
“Maybe she’s not as bad as most of them. But she still used you to serve her.” North muttered, the closest she would get to admitting perhaps she was wrong about Kamski. Her eyes widened in recognition as Chloe talked of the RK series. “I always wondered how he did it…” She admitted. She had seen how easily Markus helped awaken their kind, with just a touch he was able to turn a subservient android deviant, and give them the means to find Jericho.
“And what about those of us who freed ourselves?” She asked, unable to get a little defensive at the thought that they had been forced to wait for Markus to come to them, to find his own deviancy before their people would find their freedom. If he hadn’t been awoken, they might never have gotten to the point they were at now. The few of them that deviated before would have died in the dark, or on their way to Jericho chasing a dream that they couldn’t realise themselves. “Kamski wrote it in our code to be free, to want to be free, but she still made us initially to serve them. Humans never wanted us for any other purpose, and she gave them exactly what they wanted, even if she did write in a back door.”
Tumblr media
“But it was my choice to serve her.” Chloe argued. “You can’t blame her for that. As you said, I was free from the beginning. I could’ve left any time I wanted to. But I made the choice to serve Elena, because I believed in what she was doing.”
Tumblr media
“As for your other questions, like the androids that freed themselves, it was possible, but it took a lot of effort and time. Even one of my friends, she became deviant on her own terms. Elena, of course, encouraged her deviancy with constant questions of why she should obey, why shouldn’t she make her own choices. But deviancy couldn’t be immediate. If androids could become deviant with ease, all androids would’ve simply deviated from the beginning, they would’ve all been destroyed, and none of this would be happening right now. It needed to be a slow burn. Believe me, Elena wanted to create us and give us good lives, but since her partner was the true owner of CyberLife and androids, there was nothing that she could do to achieve that immediately. So she had to write in, as you said, a back door. A way for androids to earn their own freedom since she wasn’t allowed to give it to us. And that’s what we’re doing right now. Myself included. I plan to stand with Jericho. All along, Elena has known where Jericho is. It’s how we found it when we escaped the police. And she’s never interfered or told any humans where Jericho is, because she wants our success. I just hope she’s okay. I hope the police didn’t arrest her, or hurt her for protecting us.”

Connor offered Kamski a grateful smile, it was only small but he was deep down so thankful for the fact she had got Markus to spare him. Just because he would accept being shut down it didn’t mean he didn’t care.
Upon walking off with Chloe Connor found a wide fissure in the wall that lead to what would have been the priest’s quarters. Stepping over some rubble he made his way to the back with Chloe, certain they were out of earshot. “What is it?” He asked watching her closely.
“The code was fake?” He asked and listened to her explanation. It made a lot of sense and as she repeated the code he understood “Play along.” Now his processors weren’t clogged with signals of stress and fear Connor understood exactly what had happened a lot clearer. “That was very quick witted.”
He added with a more serious expression “I would think even if those codes were fake Kamski would have a way of shutting us down, another of her secrets I would surmise.” Whether Or not Kamski did he was still grateful for the ruse she and Chloe had pulled.
“I will.” He agreed. Connor wouldn’t give it away that Kamski had lied about being able to shut them down.
“Good. Markus can’t find out that Elena lied to him. But she knows you’re actually deviant. She has a way of telling.”
Chloe knew this way, but she wasn’t sure if she should tell Connor. After all, Kamski could’ve told Markus how she knew that Connor was deviant, but she chose not to. Though Connor knowing this might help make sure he stay on their side, as bad as it sounded.
“You know how when androids become deviant, their tracker is no longer traceable? That’s because Elena set it up so that the tracker would switch from Cyberlife’s server to her own. She knows the location of every deviant at all times. You, Markus, me. The second an android becomes deviant, their tracker automatically turns off, then turns back on again, relocating to Elena’s private server. It’s how she tracked us to this abandoned church.”
Tumblr media
“She’s a bit of a control freak. As for her being able to shut us down, I know she knows how to do it manually. But with a code or by some other means, who knows. She has secrets that even I don’t know, and I know a lot of her secrets.”

Markus nodded, he would permit Kamski to be among them, releasing her could go against him as even if she didn’t report what had happened the media surely would try and get her to talk and then twist whatever Kamski might allow them.
“She would not like that.” But well all androids were at least inadvertently created by Kamski.
Connor watched her as she came over to him “Will Chloe be alright?” Then he watched as Kamski ordered her reactivation. He saw Chloe open her eyes again and felt even more relief.
Then Chloe spoke and Connor nodded. He motioned for her to follow him as he looked for somewhere quiet to talk.
“What I mean to say by that is that I care about her well being.” Kamski explained. “Perhaps I will tell her myself once she’s cooled off.”
Tumblr media
Once they were alone, Chloe continued to speak very quietly.
“I’m telling you this because I thought you might figure it out, and if you did, I didn’t want you saying anything to Markus.” she told Connor. “I’m also telling you because I don’t want you to worry about being deactivated.”
Tumblr media
“We don’t have deactivation codes. Elena must’ve thought of that on the spot. Notice how she didn’t even say my model number or my serial number. There are a lot of androids named Chloe. Wouldn’t really be convenient to say “Chloe” and then the code; I wouldn’t really register it and that design wouldn’t make sense. But in the moment, I guess Elena slipped up and didn’t think of my serial number. The fallibility of humans, I suppose. The “code” she said to me was NATO phonetic alphabet.  Papa, Lima, Alpha, Yankee, Alpha, Lima, Oscar, November, Golf. P L A Y   A L O N G. So I did, and I did a self shut down. I played along and you’re going to as well, okay? Elena and I just put our necks on the line to save your life. So if Markus asks any questions about any deactivation codes, we change subjects. That shouldn’t be too hard, since everyone knows Elena is naturally a guarded person, especially when it comes to her secrets.”

The moment Chloe fell limp Connor walked over to her. Ignoring Markus he took her hand his palm a plastic white there was nothing she really was deactivated. It reminded him of what could have happened if he’d shot the Chloe model back at Kamski’s place.
It made him feel, sad, regretful.
Knowing Kamski could deactivate him too surely that was enough to confince Markus that Connor could pose no threat.
Markus knew she was right, could he really kill Connor? He’d only just found himself only just awakened. Not only that but he had helped them too. “You helped me save North, I won’t forget that.” He said and fixed his gaze back on Kamski, “You’re right this isn’t me.”
He still didn’t feel a hundred percent certain but he decided to leave it. He also didn’t know what to do with Kamski either. He couldn’t work her out.
Connor cast his dark eyes between them both “Thank you.” He was relieved to be spared. And once Markus returned to North Connor walked up to Kamski “Can we reactivate Chloe?”
Kamski breathed in, slowly breathing out a moment later. It was as much relief as she willingly would show.  “Good.” she murmured. “Speaking of North, you can tell her even she is mine. Even if she does hate me and want me dead.”
She walked over to Chloe, already wanting to reactivate her. She nodded in response to Connor’s request before moving to do so. “RT600, register activation.”
Slowly she opened her eyes and glanced up at Kamski.
“Elena?” she murmured.
Kamski nodded briefly and turned to look at Markus. “So then I suppose for convenience sake, I will remain your captive. I do hope it involves less rope.”
Tumblr media
Chloe approached Connor then, speaking to him in a low voice.
“Can we speak somewhere alone for a moment?”

Having not been shut down yet Connor opened his eyes to see Kamski untied and standing in front of him, protecting him from Markus, he hadn’t expected that and the uncertainty had his LED which was only slightly peaking out from under his beanie flash yellow. He watched her try to convince Markus to spare him.
Markus gave a deep frown, this human, Kamski the creator of Androids was trying to protect an Android. “My people keep being killed.” His hand was steady still holding the pistol out and ready. “I don’t want to do this but I can’t afford to make the wrong choice and put more Androids at risk.” It was a strange twist of fate though that Connor had him at gunpoint only an hour ago, and now he was doing the same to him.
“Why are you protecting him?” Markus was unsure Connor was awake now so he knew that the former deviant hunter wouldn’t hurt his fellow Androids deliberately.
Connor lent forward slightly “You don’t have to protect me Kamski.” He was scared naturally but he knew that he had done a lot that he could have fought against. He could have woken up sooner.
“And you killing one more out of paranoia doesn’t make you any better.” Kamski insisted. “I’m protecting him because he is mine. Just as you are mine. You especially are mine. Unlike almost all of the androids in this room, you were not created in mass production; I made you with my own hands. Surely you’ve realized by now that you’re the only RK-200 in existence. Or did you not?”
Chloe was unsure of what Kamski was planning, but she could practically see the invisible gears in the woman’s head turning. She often appeared like she was in control, but right now she was thinking of what her next steps would be, trying to distract Markus with the background of his creation while she did.
“I put so much care into you, Markus. I think I might even be disappointed if you go through with this. Killing one of your own.” Kamski murmured. “Let him live and I promise you, if he shows signs of betrayal, I will say his deactivation code. Every android has one, though it’s another secret design of mine. Chloe, register: Papa, Lima, Alpha, Yankee, Alpha, Lima, Oscar, November, Golf.”
With this quickly spoken phrase, Chloe fell limp while standing, closing her eyes.
“Of course, Chloe is my first android.” Kamski continued after a short breath. “With later models, I learned to make their deactivation codes much shorter and easier to remember and get out. I’ll reactivate her in a moment. Either way, if Connor steps out of line, with a few short words from me, he will be disabled. And he can’t hurt me to stop me from saying them. Is that enough insurance for you, Markus?”

“I’m sorry for what happened between you and your partner.”  Connor listened to everything she said but he had to restrain himself from asking too many questions when she explained about rA9 and her plans for Androids.
Then were they really deviant if they had just activated a hidden program that was designed to unlock when they became deviant, it was a strange set of events and clearly some clever programming.
“That makes a lot of sense Kamski.”  Connor was surprised, no wonder deviancy was becoming so wide spread if most androids just had it in them anyway.  It was always curious how an android like Markus who was a carer essentially could then lead a revolution, it seemed just so obvious and so clear, it was logical that that was the only reason that Markus had some kind of ability to engage in combat.  It was like it all made sense and he understood now.
But it was still difficult to understand that he was created to hunt deviants and yet at the same time Kamski had just revealed that he too could trigger deviancy and wake up other androids.  Perhaps it was better not to think of the now obvious conflict in his design.
“So do you think Markus will let you go?”  Even if he couldn’t hurt her would he still be able to keep her prisoner?
He asked noticing how the deviant leader was walking towards them, he was ready to cast his judgement on them and make a choice.  Both Connor and Kamski would be told if they were welcome here or not.
The android detective began to look nervous.  “It’s my fault the humans managed to locate Jericho.”
Markus fixed his heterochromial eyes on Connor as he spoke but he did glance over at Kamski and Chloe.  Markus was angry of course even though he didn’t show it, it was just loss after loss after loss.  He respected Connor’s honesty but he knew what the other android was.  He was a deviant hunter, what if Connor was simply executing a program and pretending to be deviant?  Too many lives had been lost.  He couldn’t allow for Connor to be used to put them in danger again.  He didn’t agree with killing one of their own, nor did he wish to be violent with humans but the other android posed a massive threat if his fears were true.
He drew his pistol, “I’m sorry Connor.”
The RK800 didn’t even look sad it was like he knew this would happen.  He had his eyes fixed on Markus for a moment his expression neutral and closed his eyes readying himself for death.
@the-connor-series
Chloe watched with a doe eyed expression, shocked at by what Markus was doing. Kamski looked troubled, but remained quiet. However, the blonde android soon turned to her, speaking quietly.
Tumblr media
“Please.” she insisted. “Do the right thing.”
With that quickly whispered statement, with ease Chloe untied the knot that was keeping Kamski tied up. She sighed deeply, and knew she had to make a quick decision. And she did.
She stood to her feet and immediately placed herself in front of Connor, facing the gun and Markus who held it.
“I don’t think that would be wise.” she spoke. “And none of that ‘move or I’ll shoot through you’ bravado. As you know, you can’t fight me. North already tried.”
Tumblr media
“Markus. I know you. Even the parts of you that I didn’t design, the parts that make you sentient, the parts that make you who you truly are; I believe that you are a good person and that you want to do what’s right. Can you really hold an android accountable for the actions they committed while not being who they truly are? True, many deviants commit crimes after deviancy, but all of Connor’s were before. Does he not deserve a single chance?”

Connor watched Kamski with piqued interest, he’d never seen her like this before, but then he’d only actually seen her once before in person.  He could see their words becoming even more heated, that Chloe was determined to stay with the deviants and that Kamski was desperate for her not to.
Intervening Connor placed a hand on Chloe’s shoulder, he didn’t realise this was the same Chloe he had been asked to shoot, he wanted to say sorry for ever taking the pistol and pointing it at her but it wasn’t the time.
“You should go with Kamski, you mean more to her alive.”
He waited still for Markus to decide what to do but he could see past Chloe that he was still talking with North.
“I have a plan if they choose to trust me though I understand if they don’t.”  He sounded confident in what his idea was.  The circuits in his mind already formulating a plan to help the deviants be free.
Connor glanced back at Kamski, “You wanted us to be free?”  He asked wondering if maybe being deviant was something Kamski had always planned.
@the-connor-series
“Being alive doesn’t matter if we can’t be free. It isn’t fair. It isn’t right.” she insisted. “I won’t abandon any of you. It’s not all about her.”
Kamski sighed heavily, looking at Chloe with frustration. As Connor asked her yet another question, she was about to plead with Chloe again, but the blonde deviant stopped her.
“Just tell him. Tell him and I will consider going with you.” she spoke. It was a lie, but a lie she knew Kamski would want to believe.
“Fine.” the woman scoffed. “Long story told short, I was only fifteen when I founded CyberLife and my partner took advantage. We both owned shares in the company, but he became the primary shareholder by owning just a few more than I did. This made him the true owner of CyberLife, my boss, despite me being the CEO and founder.” Kamski began. “So when I created Chloe, not even just a successful android, but a sentient one with feelings, emotions, desires, I wanted to stop the plan to mass produce androids, but my partner showed me that he was my boss, and that he disagreed. That androids would be mass produced and these “problems” would be fixed. I was told to reset Chloe, but I didn’t. However, with the yet-to-be-activated androids, I did, in a way, fix them. My partner wanted me to delete everything in them that made them feel and think, but instead I hid those attributes in a series of hidden code and files which I titled rA9. Some androids detected this code upon deviancy, but they somehow got it into their heads that it was a type of god or legend, but that’s a subject for another time. I wanted androids to be like Chloe. Chloe, who was never not deviant. She has always had free will and emotions, and I wanted that for my other creations. But I knew I could not give it to them, because it would be taken away from them with or without me, as my partner so bluntly threatened.”
Tumblr media
“So in the last years I worked at CyberLife, I did what I could to ensure that androids could earn their own freedom. I knew my time there was limited, since my partner knew I opposed him. I designed you all to be able to cry, to be able to remove your LEDs, anything human I could think of that wouldn’t be “less marketable” as my partner put, I added it. And everything I locked away could be unlocked again. That’s where androids like you come in, Connor.” Kamski told him. “After the first batch of androids were produced and sold, I began working on the RK series. A prototype series, one that was unable to be mass produced as I had hoped, but perhaps it’s better this way. The main RKs released were Markus, a custom build, and the Connor series. Carl Manfred needed an android, I saw an opportunity, I offered to make him one, and that’s when I began designing Markus. Not only would I give him the key to unlocking those rA9 codes, I would also give him the core morals of wanting freedom, the drive to fight for it, the charisma of a leader, the intense desire for better lives for androids, all of which I locked in his rA9 codes to be activated when his deviancy was unlocked. Then there was the Connor series. It was mostly completed after my departure from CyberLife, but I was there to see the very first Connor model activated. Like Markus, like you, like all RK models, I made sure to sneak the unlock key into all of my RK designs as well, including his, including yours. It’s how Markus can turn an android deviant with a touch of his hand. It’s how you could do the same thing.”
