You have all just got to come to terms with how laughably simplistic it is to dismiss legitimate critiques about modern wool production with catchphrases like ‘Its just a haircut, it doesn’t hurt them!’

Wool is ‘just a haircut’ in the same way that cocoa is ‘just a plant.’ Yes, you can acquire chocolate without harming anyone, but is anyone dismissing the obvious ethical issues with modern chocolate production by pointing out that cocoa doesn’t require us to hurt anyone to acquire? Of course not, because we all recognise that because of modern production practices and exploitation it is far more complicated than that. Why can’t we do the same for animal products?

Shearing a sheep does not have to harm sheep by itself, though fast processing speeds demanded by commercial producers means that shearing injuries are very common. That isn’t the issue with wool. The issue is that wool production by itself is not very profitable, profits are subsidised by taking lambs from their mothers every lambing season, then slaughtering them for meat. The issue is that sheep will almost always be slaughtered once their profitability declines., Most farmers cannot afford to house and feed unprofitable animals.

Tail docking is an issue, de-horning is an issue, castration is an issue. The live transport of sheep for hours in all weather extremes without food and water is an issue. Breeding sentient beings into bodies that over-produce wool, eggs, or milk to the point where they require human intervention just to be comfortable is an issue. Exploiting the bodies of animals for profit is, in and of itself, an ethical issue.

The massive environmental harm caused by grazing sheep, who have converted vast swathes of formerly forested land into ecologically dead wastelands, is difficult to overstate. Grazing animals are widely acknowledged as one of the most significant barriers to forest restoration and re-wilding. Sheep are called ‘the white plague’ by some ecologists for good reason. Just take a look at what has happened to most of England and Wales. That isn’t even factoring in the methane emissions of the sheep themselves, their resource requirements, or the fact that farmers routinely kill predators to protect their herds.

All you do when you dismiss these real concerns by pointing out that ‘wool doesn’t hurt sheep duhhh’ is show us how little thought you are willing to put into what is a far more complex issue than any of you are willing to admit. That these cringe ‘shave your sheep’ posts still get tens of thousands of shares is evidence of nothing so much as widespread ignorance and confirmation bias when it comes to discussing animal agriculture.

Honestly, so many of you have been so brainwashed by this cottagecore pastoral fantasy that you’re no longer able to apply any real nuance or analysis to animal issues. I’m not expecting you to immediately agree with us and throw out all your fleeces, but at least recognise that it’s not as simple as saying ‘shearing doesn’t harm sheep you morons.’

There is some weird inconsistency here, and I’m going to use it as an excuse to info-dump about taxonomy and extinct taxa.

Going out of order a bit, The African Wild ass, the inclusion of the Atlas subspecies , which went extinct over 1,000 years ago, long before the 1500AD benchmark the IUCN uses for historic, do to its inclusion, I’ll also talk about other (sub)species that went extinct in the past 11,700 years , almost certainly do to humans, There are also cave paintings of African wild ass in Arabia.

Both white rhino subspecies are here, but there used to be a second species in northern Africa ( as oppose to northern subsaharan africa like the modern Northern white rhino),

The black rhino info here is inconsistent, they use the 5 subspecies instead of 7 subspecies classification, but under the 5 subspecies classification, there are 3 extant subspecies, with the southern rhinoceros still being extant.

The Indian rhino is good

The Javan and Sumatran rhinos both are locally extinct in China, with these populations almost surely having been distinct subspecies ,

The Malayan tapir, Baird’s tapir, and Mountain tapir are good.

Sometimes the extinct wild population of wild horses in europe are called “ Tarpan” , but the historical population called “Tarpan” though believed to be the last truly wild European horses at the time, are low believed to just be another feral population, It’s a picture of one of these horses the third horse here ( besides the domestic and Przewalski’s wild horses ) is based after. The Lena horse is a related extinct species from siberia that is possibly a distinct subspecies.

The Onager is fine for the most part, but it’s missing the European Wild ass, which is an extinct population previously considered a separate species, but now a subspecies of onager.

Splitting the Kiang into three subspecies is a thing, though not an uncontroversial one, and their are people who would argue that the kiang is just a subspecies of onager itself

The Grevy’s zebra and The mountain zebra are both good

There is no elegant way to handle the Plains zebra. the modern “ subspecies” aren’t meaningful, rather they’re are no natural divisions in the genetic/physical variation of the surviving “subspecies”, but rather a continuous smooth gradient from north to south, but even the IUCN still considers the subspecies labels “ useful” because of the physical diversity. The Giant Cape zebra is probably an extinct subspecies also, And the Sahara zebra was a related species or possibly a subspecies

The Problem with Solar-Punk, not as a Aesthetic, but as a Wannabe Genre that takes place in a Solar Punk setting* , is that Utopias don’t make for good drama, Of-course you could have personal drama happen against a solar-punk aesthetic background, but that’s not what people are really asking for I think

I really like the idea though, of a society that is “ utopian” by our standards but their is still progress to be made, I’m envisioning it like one of those cozy-farming-village dialogue heavy dating-sim games, but the main “ plot” settles around all the bats being hit by the wind-turbines or something ( because we don’t use fossil fuels in solar-punk future), and the bad guys is the wind energy business, spreading misinformation, lobbying for subsidy/favoritism etc, and the good-side is Nuclear Fusion advocates.

The problem is that this would be immediately misinterpreted as a criticism of wind energy in a modern context, ( or sub in wind energy for most other things advocated for now as greener/better than the status quo)

* The alternative is that it’s not a full Solar-Punk setting, like maybe there just punk socialists building a community garden with solar panels on a inner-city lot and dumpster-diving and recycling, while having ongoing conflicts with the city/local-companies over something or other.

It kinda makes me want to write one of these stories just so I can try to write a backstory that explains WHY IN THE FUCK their world is like this and no one seems to complain.

It's basically the same trope as "medieval village sacrifices a maiden every year to The Dragon" but modernized. Now there's a Government Agency in charge of Feeding Virgins To Winged Reptiles, and everyone is just fine with that. Strange New Worlds: Advantages: + Basically what the original series would be if it were released today, rather than 57 years ago; all of the cool, socially consciousness sci-fi adventure, none of the weird 60s sexism + Fun, awesome characters you get to like spending time with right away + Incredible visuals + Nifty sci-fi concepts, mostly without the 90s-style technobabble Disadvantages: - A huge cast with only ten episodes a season, so many of them feel underdeveloped - Unfortunately, a bunch of its characters are younger versions of the characters from The Original Series, and they hog most of the spotlight; and the characters whose futures aren't locked in stone are kind of treated as disposable - In general, it needs to spend less time being a prequel, and more time being its own thing - "What if Starfleet ran into the Xenomorphs from Alien?" "Well, they'd probably kill them." "Okay, let's spend several episodes on this."
