Shuonun let a small smile cross his face before he chased it away with his signature disinterested smile.
"Where are you going again?" he asked.
Shuonun was sitting in a bus stop with his headphones blasting so loudly that not only he could hear his music but everyone around him could as well. He didn't seem to mind, however. There he sat, tapping his foot absentmindedly and playing with something in his pockets. He glanced up as it started to snow, sneered, and pulled his scarf up over his nose.
(Au where they don't know each other?)
Hazel realized quick who's music was so loud, it wasn't hard. She was tired though, and cold, and barely hesitated to sit by him at the bus stop. She could use the break from standing, walking all day had made the thought of sitting by a stranger less daunting.

Shuonun chuckled softly.
"This place is very beautiful, your majesty. I will not tear you away from it. May I please have your permission to sit as well?"
Prince Alexander often felt disconnected from his title, prone to forgetting to let guards know he had decided to leave the castle grounds and being dragged back a few hours later with the promise to never venture out again-until the next day.
Further efforts to settle the royal with academics and social activities only made him better at negotiating and disparaging his family’s name at events. Furthermore, while he wasn’t rude, he had an aloofness about him that would’ve been knocked out if he were from a lower class.
When the day arrived that most of the current guards had declared that years of military training didn’t prepare them for keeping watch over the royal, Alexander didn’t even stop to ponder that he was the problem.
Shuonun was the only one among Alex's personal guard who did not shy away from this desperate assignment and it was because he was new. He had only seen Alex in action for about a month and he foolishly assumed he would listen and do as he was told when his very life was threatened.
He was wrong.

Shuonun turned to angle his body outwards so he could lean on the wall of the bus shelter. He closed his eyes.
"What do you think?"

Shuonun sneered at him.
"Do you just tell everyone your life story as soon as you come face to face with them, then?"
His French accent was suprisingly minimal. Clearly he had learned English when he was very young. If prompted he would reveal thay he also spoke Norwegian and Ukranian fluently, his father being the reason for the former and his mother the reason for the latter. But Shuonun did not feel like talking about himself without prompting, which is why he regarded Alex with suspicion now.
Summer, 1987. A dry breeze wafted through dusty Stull, Kansas. That breeze brought little relief to the farmers in the fields wiping the sweat from their brows. It brought little change to the direction of the weather vanes on the barn rooftops. It brought little rustling to the cornstalks in the fields or the leaves on the trees. That breeze blew the Møller family right into town. Colden, Lilla, and their three children had landed in the country less than three hours prior. They had bought a house in Kansas through a friend of a friend. They had needed to leave their home in Paris for... reasons. Reasons the oldest son, Stefan wouldn't reveal except under waterboarding, reasons the younger son, Shuonun, thought were stupid and sort of funny, and reasons the youngest daughter, a bouncing baby girl named Sarpedon, were oblivious to. Stull was to be their new home, much to the chagrin of Shuonun. He was not excited for country life like his parents were. He was not relieved to be in America like his brother was. He was not blissfully ignorant like his six-month-old sister was.
Alexander thanked himself that his parents weren’t farmers, they owned the drug store in the sleepy town, but he felt they had as many kids as most. The town was large enough that the kids weren’t forced to all play with each other in some one-room-schoolhouse but small enough that everybody knew the Pine last name.
Furthermore, everyone knew that a new family was moving to town, and the young boy would be damned if he didn’t see them in person. Pushing his way to the front of the crowd around the house, he took note of the ages of the children, already planning to brag to his younger sister that there was a boy his age.
Watching the mayor welcome the family to town, he rolled his eyes at the over-friendliness from a woman who had yelled at him for climbing a tree an hour prior.

While the family tried to accept these niceties graciously, Stefan ran into the house almost immediately. Shuonun rolled his eyes.
"Je veux voir ma chambre," he whispered in his mother's ear.
"You stay right where you are," she replied sternly. She jostled the baby in her arms who was quickly tiring of being outside.
Colden, the patriarch, shook every hand that came within a couple inches of his face. He introduced himself and the rest of his family time and time again because he knew he was expected to.
Lilla became increasingly flustered as she tried to calm her baby. It wasn't long before Sarpedon began to cry. Lilla sighed, apologized, and dashed into the house. All bets were off then for Shuonun, who darted in after her leaving Colden alone on the step shaking hands.

"Hm." That's all Shuonun said in reaponse. Then, he spoke again. "Do you want to listen to my headphones for a minute?"

Shuonun was not stupid. He knew Alex wouldn't be going anywhere near the lavatory. He also knew he had a penchant for running from his guarding party so he had to play things a little sneakily.
He did finish Alex's plate. When he was finished, he dared not take his time and savour the meal no matter how badly he wanted to, he rose to his feet and started off for the garden. He stalked silently down the halls.

"Is it not noble to die protecting someone else?" Shuonun asked as he passed Alex back his plate. "Are you not worth dying for, your majesty?"
Shuonun reached for a bowl of bread that had been left on the table for both of them.
"Besides," he continued. "If I die they need to hire you a new guard and bury me. If you die, we all go to war. How many lives are saved in saving yours? Plenty, I'd say."

"I'm supposed to check them for poison," corrected Shuonun. "Which I suppose means eating some of what you eat, yes."
Shuonun cracked a wry smile at Alex's theatrics. Clearly, the prince was entertaining him. The other guards had warned him that he would try.

Shuonun cautioned a few steps forward to walk alongside Alex but he averted his eyes from the Prince's face.
"My liege, I am familiar with your habit of sneaking out and losing your entourage but today and for the forseeable future your life is in immediate danger. Spies and assassins from Bravonlandia may attempt to capture you to gain leverage against this kingdom or kill you to force us into a war. My job is to prevent this from happening and the only person capable of thwarting me is you."

"You leaving work or going to it?" asked Shuonun, figuring that those were the only two reasons humans rode the bus.

Shuonun had such a trained eye. He walked a few paces behind Alex at all times, nodding warily at his collegues who passed.
"Permission to speak freely, your majesty?" he asked as they walked.
