something that breaks my heart is how easily thatch died. thatch, the fourth division commander of the whitebeard pirates, must’ve been incredibly powerful. the whitebeard commanders we know in detail: marco, oden, ace, izou, jozu, vista, etc, are renown as some of the most powerful characters in their respective fortes each. the whitebeard pirates were titans of the pirate world, and to hold a position of power in their ranks is placing you easily among some of the most powerful in one piece almost inherently.
but thatch died without a fight to our knowledge, thatch died quietly, found in a pool of his own blood, body already cold. thatch died very literally stabbed in the back, in the middle of the night without last words that would reach anyone’s ears. it’s brutal and more than anything, it’s so unpleasantly bitter.
i think how he died is very symbolic of the whitebeard pirates as a crew. a man who, while we don’t know in combat, is at least comparable to the commanders we do know. his faith and family-orientated love was so unwavering it caused a man like that to die swiftly and silently. while blackbeard’s power pre-devil fruit is nothing to undermine, especially given the wound he gave shanks, i refuse to believe thatch wouldn’t of at least been able to defend himself briefly; long enough to be heard. thatch died with unquestioning love in his heart, not for one second was his guard up, and only in teach’s gross abuse of that trust did thatch succumb. thatch died so easily, and nothing hurts more than that.
all the whitebeard pirates died for love. oden died, tortured and shot, after holding his loved ones above his head for an hour so they wouldn’t boil alive alongside him. thatch died with unquestioning adoration, stabbed in the back by a member of his cherished family. ace died indirectly as a result of trying to avenge thatch, and directly by defending luffy in the pinnacle of marineford, protecting his little brother until his last breath. whitebeard died attempting to rescue ace, falling victim to hundreds of wounds in his path as he clambered to save his son. ultimately, the bullet that would kill him was from the gun of the son that betrayed him. izou died in sacrifice, telling his younger sister to live. he died fighting against enemies who intended to hurt ace’s little brother and who would’ve doomed his homeland if they succeeded. whitebeard pirates are so kind, love is as natural to them as breathing. i am hoping, in some way, there will be a resting conclusion to all the suffering they have been dealt so horribly. they are so full of love, and that makes their story so tragic.

I'm sure Luffy takes being a big brother very seriously!
Luffy and Kite (aka Grumpy)~ I was in the mood for some self-indulgent kid OC doodling :D And I just really like Grumpy!
(Grumpy's a year younger than Luffy.)

It might take him a while to process.
Rocks telling Whitebeard that he's pregnant has been requested. ;3
Previous parts: Part 1 & Part 2
(I had to be somewhat reasonable with their height difference because otherwise I wouldn't have figured out how to draw this X'DD Let's just imagine that Whitebeard wasn't done growing at this point when he was around 27.)

Thanks to Luffy, Kite can forget flying under the radar as a marine in the East Blue (where he was less likely to run across Garp or a certain Warlord). No training wheels! Straight to Marine Headquarters with you, kid!

I'm about to nerd-out about the Fan Letter project:
The one piece fan letter project is so genuinely beautiful. I'm not even talking about the jaw dropping animation and the comeback of the art style. The very idea of this - the perspective of civilians, non-power/haki users and just random people in a world that's already so wide is so cool. And the way we got to experience the main characters of the main series - their impact on the world and the collateral. I particularly loved how they were still there but in the way their faves were obscured, never fully shown (other than the last scene) you could tell they weren't the focus even if the whole episode was a tribute to them and their fans.
(This is what I mean by the faces thing)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This entire scene is just the girl and Usopp (I can talk about the symbolism in colors and shading/the parallels of the marine literally casting a shadow on her while one of the strawhats gives her a helping hand, but I digress) - the focus is still on her, regradless of the speaker and the camera is only following her movements and facial expressions. We only get a clear view of Usopp's face a second before the scene changes.
This too, Luffy is the only one on the screen but we don't get to see him, not fully(even in the closer shots), because it's not about him.

I also loved how funny they made the power scalers in the bar (and he way we saw Zoro and Sanji interact with them. As they are probably one of the usual ones to be compared by dude-bros, it was like an inside joke for the fandom and I love it to bits!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Truly amazing.
Or the little fanboying moments, so cute!

And I can't believe I'm just now hearing of the theory that Chopper's bounty is always this low because the mariens love him so much they don't want the high bounty to put him in danger!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's so much to be implied/confirmed! For example, we get to see how many people love Brook because for some reason we keep forgetting he's a world-famous rockstar. He has his own merch, he started a trend with afros and those glasses he has on the poster, his fans picked up his puns,

It was also touching how Luffy touched lives without even trying (not that he usually does), as the marine brothers. Even though the older one claims he doesn't like his brother, he loves him enough to appreciate him being alive when he witnessed an entire war for someone else's. Even if he doesn't want to admit it, it's clear he cares about his brother deeply. It's just so amazing seeing it :''))

(Bonus to this is the little monologue Nami's fangirl has that adds so much about their relationship :))

I'm so looking forward to more ;;--;;

To me, what is so fantastic about One Piece Fan Letter is the emphasis on the way the Straw Hats have created these connections in the lives of people they have never met. The ending scene, with all the hands putting together the puzzle pieces, and the way that all these connections came together in one dazzling way-- I loved that. I teared up at that. Wherever the Straw Hats go, they leave behind all of these puzzle pieces for people to put together and create bonds that would not have existed had the Straw Hats not shown up!
And it also just... Makes me so in love with the concept of the world after Luffy becomes King of The Pirates. I know that Oda has the final chapter planned in his head, and I doubt we will really see the long lasting effects of Luffy achieving the title of Pirate King + his dream, and I really do not want a sequel series ala Boruto or Yasahime, but.... I want to see a world in which children believe they can become a Brave Warrior of the Sea thanks to Usopp, I want to see more children look at Nami and realize they don't NEED to have a Devil Fruit or Haki or muscles to have adventures. I want to see the next generation of the One Piece world believe so strongly in their dreams, that they set out to accomplish them.
One Piece Fan Letter really opened the door, I think, for more and more stories about the "regular" people in the world of One Piece, the people you don't see in the arcs because they're the nondescript background characters, and how the Straw Hat Crew has changed them. And I want that. To me, that is fantastic.

I love that Usopp is the only straw hat who interacts with our main girl in One Piece Fan Letter. Because Usopp gets it. He’s been there. Of all the Straw Hats, I feel like he’s the closest one to a “normal” person. Even now with all the insane skills he has—the portrayal of the other Straw Hats on Sabaody felt like celebrity cameos, giants spotted in the wild…whereas Usopp is portrayed as just a guy. Bending down to help a girl pick up her things, checking if she’s ok, giving her terrible advice on how to sneak into a bar. Part of this is because at this point Usopp doesn’t have a bounty under his own name, so nobody would know him. But it’s notable that for all the little fandom jokes and Easter eggs the episode sprinkles in, nobody mentions Sogeking. It would’ve been so easy to drop even one quick joke about it. But no. Because with Usopp, we don’t love him for the persona. We love him for the goofy, insecure, empathetic guy that he is. So of course the Straw Hat with the most speaking lines in an episode about regular people is Usopp. Of course he’s the one to see our girl, actually see her, and reach out to her. Of course.
